1 DUKE UNIVERSITY CHAPEL Service of Worship Third Sunday of Easter April 6, 2008 Eleven o clock in the morning Keeping the heart of the University listening to the heart of God The Emmaus Wanderers, by Eric de Saussure, 1968 Today's sermon draws together two influences. The gospel of the day is the story of the risen Jesus meeting two forlorn disciples on the road to Emmaus, and being made known to them in the breaking of the bread. Meanwhile the Hope for Our World textile art exhibit adorns the nave of the Chapel. Today's worship seeks more specifically than usual to identify how the liberation brought by Jesus transforms conventional notions of the spiritual and the political, and thus brings true hope for our world.
2 DUKE UNIVERSITY CHAPEL Duke Chapel is a grand building, suitable for hosting major events in the life of the University and its members; it acts as a moderator for the diversity of religious identity and expression on campus; and it is a Christian church of an unusually interdenominational character, with a tradition of stirring music, preaching, and liturgy. We welcome you to our life of worship, learning, dialogue, and service. Box 90974, Durham, NC FOR WORSHIPERS & VISITORS Prayer requests may be placed in the prayer box located by the Memorial Chapel. Because of the Easter holiday, there will not be a tour of the Chapel after services today. Hearing assist units and a Braille hymnal are available at the attendant s desk at the entry way of the Chapel. See the Chapel attendant if you would like to use one of our large-print Bibles or hymnals for the worship service this morning. FOR FAMILIES & CHILDREN Children 4 and younger are welcome to visit the nursery (capacity limited), located in the Chapel basement, beginning at 10:50 a.m. each week. Pagers are available for parents to keep with them during worship. Parents needing a place to feed, quiet, or change infants are also welcome. Activity Bags are available at the rear of the Chapel for children 5 or younger. Please return the bags at the end of the service. Children s bulletins are available from the ushers. We invite you to consider joining the Congregation at Duke Chapel. The Congregation is an interdenominational church with a variety of vibrant ministries, including discipleship and spiritual formation (for children, youth, and adults), mission and outreach, and pastoral care. 5 SERMON Food is Politics RESPONSE *THE APOSTLES CREED I believe in God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth; And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; the third day he rose from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. MISSION ANNOUNCEMENT CALL TO PRAYER Minister: The Lord be with you. People: And also with you. Minister: Let us pray. PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE (The congregation responds to each petition: Hear our prayer. ) OFFERTORY ANTHEM Nation Shall Not Lift Up a Sword Against Nation (from Dona nobis pacem) Ralph Vaughan Williams ( ) Nation shall not lift up a sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more. And none shall make them afraid, neither shall the sword go through their land. Mercy and truth are met together; righteousness and peace have kissed each other. Truth shall spring out of the earth, and righteousness shall look down from heaven. Open to me the gates of righteousness, I will go into them. Let all the nations be gathered together, and let the people be assembled; and let them hear, and say, it is truth. And it shall come, that I will gather all nations and tongues. And they shall come and see my glory. And I will set a sign among them, and they shall declare my glory among the nations. For as the new heavens and the new earth, which I will make, shall remain before me, so shall your seed and your name remain for ever. Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good-will toward men. Adapted from Micah 4:3, Leviticus 26:6, Psalms 85: 10 and 118:19, Isaiah 43:9 and 66:18-22, Luke 2:14
