1 DUKE UNIVERSITY CHAPEL Service of Worship Twelfth Sunday after Pentecost August 19, 2007 Eleven o clock in the morning Keeping the heart of the University listening to the heart of God Duke Chapel s baptismal font Today s scripture lessons reveal God s anger over the waywardness of the people of God. Isaiah describes the relationship of God to Israel by using the image of a vineyard the owner lovingly nurtured and labored over the vineyard, only to have the land yield wild grapes. God hoped for his people to bear fruit, but the fruit is rotten. The parable is followed by images of destruction and loss of protection as a result of God s grief. The lesson in Luke is also replete with images of strife and division. Jesus expects complete allegiance, and he speaks to the cost of such discipleship while also redefining the contours of family. For Christians, baptism is the new mark of family.

Wine is used for communion. The tradition as understood at Duke Chapel is that the Holy Spirit makes Christ fully present in both

5 the bread and the wine. If you receive only the bread, be assured that you are nonetheless in full communion with Christ and the Church. If you would like to receive individual anointing with oil and prayers for healing, ministers will be in the Memorial Chapel during communion. THE QUR AN FOR NON-MUSLIMS Duke Professor Bruce Lawrence will give a talk titled The Qur an for Non-Muslims, on Thursday, September 6, at 7:30 p.m. in Room 0016 of the Westbrook Building. He is an Islamic scholar whose latest book is called The Qur'an: A Biography. All are invited. CHILDREN S AND YOUTH CLASSES Classes for children and youth are offered each Sunday at 9:45 a.m. throughout the school year. Children (ages 2-11) are invited to attend classes in Godly Play held in the crypt each week. Youth (ages 12-18) meet in the Divinity School student lounge for Bible study, and at 5:00 p.m. they meet for fellowship in the Chapel basement lounge.
