1 Service of Worship Christ the King November 26, 2017 Eleven o clock in the morning Bridging Faith and Learning Christ in Judgment, Florence, Italy, c Today we celebrate the eternal Kingship of Christ and the end of the church s liturgical year. In this morning s Scripture readings, the prophet Ezekiel foretells the coming of Jesus as the one true Shepherd, who will gather his scattered flock from all nations. In Matthew s Gospel, Jesus teaches of his second coming in glory, when he will come with majesty and judgment. Those who love Jesus will, as the psalmist sings, worship the Lord with gladness and come into his presence with singing.

2 The congregation is invited to reflect silently during the prelude as a time of prayer and meditation. The Chapel welcomes families with children. 5 Advent andchristmas at Duke Chapel November 28, 7:00 p.m. Duke Chorale Christmas Concert The Duke Chorale, directed by Rodney Wynkoop, presents its annual Christmas Concert featuring seasonal selections by the Duke Chorale as well as traditional carols for the entire audience to sing and stories and special treats for the children. Pre-concert music on the carillon begins at 6:30 p.m. December 7, 6:00 p.m. Vespers Advent Lessons and Carols Service As daylight fades, Choral Vespers invites students and community members into the darkened Chapel to experience sacred music, scripture readings, and prayer to mark the season of Advent. December 20, 12:00 2:00 p.m. Duke Chapel by Candlelight Christmas Open House All are welcome to attend the annual candlelight open house at Duke Chapel, which features Christmas music. There is no cost to attend and no tickets are required. December 24, 11:00 a.m. Service of Worship for the Fourth Sunday of Advent The Chapel will worship together as usual on Sunday morning, with the Rev. Debra Brazzel as our guest preacher. Christmas Eve 2:00 p.m. Christmas Eve Service for Children This family-friendly worship service includes music and storytellers to announce the birth of Christ. The service lasts approximately 40 minutes. Christmas Eve 4:00 p.m. Service of Worship This afternoon service includes Christmas carols, the Durham Children s Choir, and a sermon from Dean Luke Powery. Christmas Eve 6:00 p.m. Service of Worship with Holy Communion This evening service includes Christmas carols, Holy Communion, the Amalgam brass ensemble, and a sermon from Dean Luke Powery. Christmas Eve 11:00 p.m. Service of Lessons and Carols This traditional Lessons and Carols service features a large community choir, Scripture, and choral music. Open community choir rehearsal at 9 p.m. Prelude begins at 10:30 p.m. A maximum of 1300 persons will be admitted to each service: no overflow seating available.

6 Chapel Announcements Today s Flowers Flowers for today s worship service are given to the glory of God by the Erlenbach Family Trust. Today s Offering All of today s cash offerings and checks written to Duke University Chapel will be used to support human service organizations in the greater Durham area. Bach Cantata Series The next performance in the Bach Cantata Series is today at 5:15 p.m. This concert includes Bach s rarely heard Missa in F major, BWV 233, and Cantata 187, with period instrument orchestra and professional soloists. No tickets required. Messiah Tickets on Sale Tickets are on sale for the 85th year of performances at Duke Chapel of Handel s masterwork, Messiah. Performances are being held Friday, December 1, at 7:30 p.m.; Saturday, December 2, at 2:00 p.m.; and Sunday, December 3, at 3:00 p.m. To purchase tickets, contact the Duke Box Office at tickets.duke.edu or Also, a special preconcert luncheon with limited seating will be held at the Washington Duke Inn on December 3. Fair Trade On December 8, Duke Chapel will be designated a Fair Trade Congregation, the first in the state of North Carolina, by the national trade justice organization Fair Trade Campaigns. As part of the effort, the public coffee bar in the Chapel lounge now serves Fair Trade coffee and sugar. Fair Trade is an alternative trade approach that is based on a partnership between producers and consumers. It guarantees a living wage to workers (often in third world countries) who farm/produce raw goods such as coffee and sugar, while supporting community and environmental projects in their communities. This is part of the Chapel s Green and Fair Chapel creation care vision. For Worshipers And Visitors Large print hymnals and bulletins are available at the front desk. Prayer requests may be placed in the prayer box located by the Memorial Chapel. For a tour of Duke Chapel, meet today s docent near the front steps of the Chapel following the service. Hearing assistance units are available at the sound desk at the back left of the Chapel. For optimal hearing assistance, please sit in the pews near the third columns of the Chapel nave, where the speakers are located. For Families And Children Children 4 and younger are welcome to visit the nursery (capacity limited), located in the Chapel basement, beginning at 10:50 a.m. each week. Pagers are available for parents to keep with them during worship. Parents needing a place to feed, quiet, or change infants are also welcome. Worship Bags for ages 0 5, and Children s Worship Bulletins TM for ages 3 6 and 7 12, are available at the rear of the Chapel. Please return bags and clipboards at the end of the service. Angel Tree Project Share, organized through the Duke Community Service Center, invites individuals to help make the holidays special for economically disadvantaged Durham residents by purchasing Christmas gifts. Names, wish lists, and instructions may be picked up from the Angel Tree in the narthex today. Gifts are to be returned by Tuesday, December 5. Travel to Haiti The Congregation is planning to visit Family Health Ministries in Haiti January 22 25, Additional participants are welcome. Alternative Gift Market The Mission and Outreach Committee will sponsor an Alternative Gift Market on the Sundays of December 3 and 10, with proceeds supporting ZOE. Individuals may purchase gifts such as seeds, bananas, and sewing equipment for children in Africa in honor of family and friends. Stop by the table in the narthex to learn more.
