1 Service of Worship Fourth Sunday after the Epiphany February 3, 2013 Eleven o clock in the morning Keeping the heart of the University listening to the heart of God Love is Patient, Ashley Rose, The passage from Paul s first letter to the church in Corinth is one of the most well-known passages in all of Christian scripture for its reflection on love. In writing to the Corinthians, Paul seeks to rebuke the spiritual pride of the community. The love he advocates is not a disembodied love, but a love lived out within the community and profoundly connected to the love we encounter in the cross of Christ. In Luke Jesus tells his followers that no prophet is accepted in the prophet s hometown, a reminder that sometimes the voice of love may be heard and rejected.
2 At the close of today s service, the Lord s Supper will be celebrated in the Memorial Chapel located to the left of the chancel. Immediately following the Lord s Supper, a service of prayer for healing will be held. The service consists of prayers for healing and wholeness, with anointing and laying on of hands. All are invited. Gathering Carillon The congregation is asked to remain silent during the prelude as a time of prayer and meditation. Prelude Xácara Ciacona in D Minor Introit Senex puerum portabat Senex puerum portabat, Puer autem senem regebat. Quem virgo peperit, Et post partum virgo permansit, Ipsum quem genuit, adoravit. 4 Response Hymn 408 The Gift of Love gift of love *The Apostles Creed I believe in God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth; And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; the third day he rose from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation. Pass the time of your sojourning here in fear. Love one another with a pure heart fervently. Today s Offering The February Mission of the Month is YO: Durham (Year of Opportunity: Durham) which works with at-risk Durham teens. Founded by Durham Congregations In Action, YO: Durham is currently working with its sixth class. Students attend an intensive Summer Career Academy (SCA), work with mentors throughout the year, work at paid after-school internships, and participate in service learning projects. The SCA includes classes in career planning, dress for success, manners, dining etiquette, anger management, public speaking, personal finance, and civics. Community leaders and business people speak at the SCA and offer advice on career opportunities. Field trips include college visits and a team-building ropes course. Graduates of the program have gone on to pursue various jobs, university careers, and military service. Ash Wednesday Services Duke Chapel will have two services (8:00 a.m. and 5:15 p.m.) on Ash Wednesday, February 13. Andrew Tucker, campus minister for the Duke Lutherans, will offer a homily at both services, and there will be an opportunity to receive the imposition of ashes. The 5:15 p.m. service will include the Duke Vespers Ensemble. Ash Wednesday marks the first day of the season of Lent, which encompasses the 40 days prior to Easter Sunday. It is traditionally a season of repentance and fasting. The six Sundays in Lent are considered feast days and not counted as days of penance.
7 This Week at Duke Chapel Morning Prayer - Monday at 9:00 a.m. in the Memorial Chapel Communion and Healing - Tuesday at 5:15 p.m. in the Memorial Chapel Choral Vespers - Thursday at 5:15 p.m. in the Chancel The Congregation at Duke University Chapel The following Congregation opportunities are open to all. Pancake Breakfast Next Sunday, February 9, join the Congregation in a pancake breakfast in the Chapel kitchen at 9:45 a.m. This will also be a chance to visit with the Congregation candidate for Senior Pastor, the Rev. Dr. Carol Gregg. Senior Pastor Search Update Please join the Search Committee after church today in the Chapel basement to learn about the search process, hear about the Rev. Dr. Carol Gregg, and ask any questions you have. Light refreshments will be provided. Remember to sign up for the Winter Retreat, which is on Saturday, February 9. Dr. Gregg has planned and will be leading the retreat in conjunction with other Congregation staff. This day-long event will allow you to know our candidate more intimately and to benefit from her gifts of Christian ministry and education. Finally, mark your calendars for the Pastor Affirmation Vote on Sunday, February 24, which will be held in Goodson Chapel in the Divinity School immediately after Sunday morning worship. Local Missions Collection Two of the organizations supported by the Congregation have particular needs for transportation help. Since Meals on Wheels volunteers use their own vehicles, gift cards for gas would help greatly to retain drivers who may drive multiple routes. Open Tables Ministry, an outreach to the homeless community in Durham, also identified the purchase of gas as a major cost of maintaining their ministry. Service station gift cards would be a blessing to their work. To support these ministries please put gift cards for gas or a check to the Congregation with Local Missions Gas Card in the memo line in the collection plate on February 10 or 17. Lenten Book Study Congregation members Connie Riddle and Terry Yuschok will lead a Lenten book study on Wednesdays, February 20, 27, and March 5. The group will read Barbara Brown Taylor s book An Altar in the World. This book describes meaningful ways to discover the sacred in daily life. The first session will cover the first four chapters. To sign up contact Terry or yuschok@gmail.com.
8 Duke University Chapel Duke Chapel is a grand building, suitable for hosting major events in the life of the University and its members; it acts as a moderator for the diversity of religious identity and expression on campus; and it is a Christian church of an unusually interdenominational character, with a tradition of stirring music, preaching, and liturgy. We welcome you to our life of worship, learning, dialogue, and service. Box 90974, Durham, NC For Worshipers & Visitors Prayer requests may be placed in the prayer box located by the Memorial Chapel. For a tour of Duke Chapel, meet today s docent near the front steps of the Chapel following the service. Hearing assist units and a Braille hymnal are available at the attendant s desk at the entry way of the Chapel. See the Chapel attendant if you would like to use one of our large-print Bibles or hymnals for the worship service this morning. For Families & Children Children 4 and younger are welcome to visit the nursery (capacity limited), located in the Chapel basement, beginning at 10:50 a.m. each week. Pagers are available for parents to keep with them during worship. Parents needing a place to feed, quiet, or change infants are also welcome. Activity Bags (for children 5 and under) and Liturgy Boxes (ages 5-8) are available at the rear of the Chapel to help children engage in worship. Please return after the service. We invite you to consider joining the Congregation at Duke Chapel. The Congregation is an interdenominational church with a variety of vibrant ministries, including discipleship and spiritual formation (for children, youth, and adults), mission and outreach, and pastoral care.
