1 Service of Worship Sixth Sunday after Pentecost June 30, 2013 Eleven o clock in the morning Keeping the heart of the University listening to the heart of God Elijah Is Taken up to Heaven, by He Qi, The God we encounter in the Bible is one who seeks our transformation. In 2 Kings, Elisha has a firm desire to follow Elijah, and after Elijah is carried away by a whirlwind and a chariot of fire, Elisha cries out in grief and questions God. He then submits himself to Elijah s God and then takes up Elijah s mantle for the people of Israel. The letter to the Galatian church emphasizes the freedom found in Christ a freedom that is not manifest in self-indulgence, but in love and service of one another. In Luke 9, Jesus makes clear that discipleship is a radical act. Even as he invites people to follow him, he notes the cost of the decision, telling people that they cannot cling to their former lives and serve God s kingdom.

2 At the close of today s service, the Lord s Supper will be celebrated in the Memorial Chapel, located to the left of the chancel. Immediately following the Lord s Supper, a Service of Healing will be held in the Memorial Chapel. The service consists of prayers for healing and wholeness, with anointing and laying on of hands. All are invited. The congregation is asked to remain silent during the prelude as a time of prayer and meditation. 6 About Today s Guest Preacher Today we are pleased to welcome the Rev. Dr. Sally Brown as Clevus F. and Lilla Hawkins Boyles Guest Preacher. Dr. Brown is Elizabeth M. Engle Associate Professor of Preaching and Worship at Princeton Theological Seminary. She turned to her second career in theological education after twenty-two years in parish and non-parish pastoral ministry. From , she served the First Presbyterian Church of Bethlehem, PA, focusing on preaching, small-group ministries, spiritual formation, and training lay caregivers to meet the needs of families in crisis. The author of two books as well as many articles and book chapters, Dr. Brown has two new books under way, one of them, Ways of the Word: Learning to Preach for Your Time and Place, co-authored with Dean Powery and due out in late She and her husband, Peter Dunbar, reside near Reading, Pennsylvania. Chapel Announcements Today s Flowers Flowers for today s worship are given to the glory of God by the Erlenbach Family Trust. Today s Offering All of today s cash offerings and undesignated checks will be used to underwrite the costs for undergraduate students going on the Chapel s Spring Break mission trips. Duke Chapel PathWays provides mission trip opportunities for students who are interested in spending their Spring Break in service, community, and reflection. Most recently, Chapel staff led student trips to Costa Rica, Honduras, and New Mexico. Housing for New Hope Celebration Today at 2:30 p.m., the Chapel will host Housing for New Hope s graduation for people who have participated in the Phoenix and Dove House programs transitional housing programs for formerly homeless men and women. Following the graduation, there will be a graduation party in the Chapel basement lounge with desserts and drinks for all those attending the graduation. 7 The Congregation at Duke University Chapel The following Congregation opportunities are open to all. Local Missions Collection The July Local Missions back pew collection is for Threshold Clubhouse. Threshold Clubhouse helps adults in Durham with severe mental illness stay out of the hospital, succeed at work, continue their education, and reach personal goals. It is not a residential program; rather, the members receive job training for specific jobs. The staff then continues to work closely with employers, providing reliable workers for high-turnover entry level jobs. Threshold uses methods proven in an international network of Clubhouses. Please bring your contributions of socks and toiletries (shaving cream, razors, deodorant, bar soap, shampoo and conditioner, toothpaste, toothbrushes, and denture adhesive) to the back pew of the Chapel on July 14 and 21. Durham Bulls Game The Local Missions committee, along with Volunteers of America, is sponsoring a trip to a Durham Bulls game for veterans who live at Maple Court. The game is on Tuesday, August 6, at 7:05 p.m and will pit the Bulls against the Rochester Red Wings. Sign up by July 21 to attend the game. If you are unable to attend but would like to sponsor a veteran, please consider donating to the cost of tickets ($10 for two tickets, including food and beverage). Make checks payable to the Congregation with ballgame written in the memo line. Please note that this is a family-friendly, alcohol-free event.
