1 DUKE UNIVERSITY CHAPEL Service of Worship All Saints Sunday Duke Parents and Family Weekend November 4, 2007 Eleven o clock in the morning Keeping the heart of the University listening to the heart of God The Mystical Supper, icon by Simon Ushakov, 1685 Today we celebrate All Saints Day, which is a time for the Church to remember all those saints, known and unknown, who have gone before us and have faithfully walked the Christian path. The mood of this service is one of celebration and joy for all those people who have borne fruit for the kingdom by their service to Christ. Today we welcome new members into the communion of saints through the sacrament of baptism. We will also reflect on our connection with Christian saints throughout time by celebrating Holy Communion. In addition, we extend a warm welcome to all those visitors who are at Duke as part of Parents and Family Weekend.

2 DUKE UNIVERSITY CHAPEL Duke Chapel is a grand building, suitable for hosting major events in the life of the University and its members; it acts as a moderator for the diversity of religious identity and expression on campus; and it is a Christian church of an unusually interdenominational character, with a tradition of stirring music, preaching, and liturgy. FOR FAMILIES & CHILDREN Children 4 and younger are welcome to visit the nursery (capacity limited), located in the Chapel basement, beginning at 10:50 a.m. each week. Pagers are available for parents to keep with them during worship. Parents needing a place to feed, quiet, or change infants are also welcome. Activity Bags are available at the rear of the Chapel for children 5 or younger. Please return the bags at the end of the service. Children s bulletins are available from the ushers. This morning we give thanks for Duke s Program in Literature for its focus on comparative language, literature, and aesthetics, which provide students a lens through which to view history and culture. The congregation sings the responses.) *THE LORD S PRAYER (number 895 in the hymnal, in unison) SHARING OF THE BREAD AND WINE All those who have become members of Christ s body through baptism and seek to be united with God and at peace with their neighbor are invited to receive communion. Wine is used for communion. The tradition as understood at Duke Chapel is that the Holy Spirit makes Christ fully present in both the bread and the wine. If you receive only the bread, be assured that you are nonetheless in full communion with Christ and the Church. If you would like to receive individual anointing with oil and prayers for healing, ministers will be in the Memorial Chapel during communion. 8 CHAPEL ANNOUNCEMENTS FLOWERS Today s flowers are given to the glory of God by the Congregation at Duke Chapel in memory of congregation members who have died in the last year: Lela Colver, Martha Freedman, and Mayme Harris Perry. TODAY S OFFERING The whole of today s offering will be used to support human service organizations in the greater Durham area. These nonprofit organizations are identified to receive funds by a panel of Congregation members, Friends, and students. The grant-making process not only benefits people in need, but also seeks to introduce students to faithful stewardship and community development. Recent groups supported include a medical clinic in Honduras and Christian Peacemaker Teams. ABOUT TODAY S GUEST MUSICIANS The Duke University Jazz Ambassadors is a group made up of students and faculty from Duke. The group has a long history of performing, dating back to the 1930s, and has been reconstituted in recent years as a small ensemble dedicated to performing jazz on and off campus. Jazz groups at Duke have been led in past years by such instrumentalists as Les Brown and Paul Jeffrey, and today they are led by John Brown. COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT Duke Chapel has begun an list for those interested in building friendships across boundaries and engaging with the West End and greater Durham community.
