1 Duke University Chapel Service of Worship Ninth Sunday after Pentecost July 25, 2010 Eleven o clock in the morning Keeping the heart of the University listening to the heart of God the prayer continued. by Flickr user र क वट क ल य ख द, Photo used with permission under a creative commons license. In the scripture lesson for today, Paul urges spiritual maturity to the community at Colossae a faith that is deeply rooted in the fullness and authority of Christ. In Luke, Jesus encourages his disciples to approach God with intimacy using the language of Father, in what we have come to call The Lord s Prayer. The God of Israel waits with longing and expectation, desiring to give abundantly to those who knock at the door.
2 The congregation is asked to remain silent during the prelude as a time of prayer and meditation. Gathering Carillon Organ Prelude Two chorale settings of Vater unser im Himmelreich, S. 682 and 683 ( Our Father in Heaven ) Johann Sebastian Bach ( ) Greeting *Processional Hymn 545 The Church s One Foundation aurelia *Prayer of Confession and Words of Assurance (in unison) Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways to the glory of your name. Amen. The minister speaks words of assurance. *Peace (All exchange signs and words of God s peace.) Proclamation Prayer for Illumination (in unison) Lord God, your Son left the riches of heaven and became poor for our sake: form us by your word so that when we prosper, you save us from pride; when we are needy, you save us from despair, that we learn more how to trust in you alone; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. First Lesson Colossians 2:6-15 (NT page 189 in the pew Bible) Lector: This is the word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God. *Gradual Hymn 405 (sing both stanzas) Seek Ye First (All turn to face the Gospel Procession.) seek ye

Praise God above, ye heavenly host, Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia. Thanksgiving and Communion This morning we give thanks for the Center for Instructional Technology (CIT). We value its support of the academic mission of the University by helping instructors find innovative ways to use technology to achieve their teaching goals. Drawing on expertise in both technology and pedagogy, CIT seeks to enliven the learning experience through technology. The ushers bring an ipod to the altar. In Durham we remember the Durham Police Department and its mission to partner with citizens in safeguarding the community, especially through the efforts of Partners Against Crime in each district. The ushers bring forward a map of the five police districts in the city of Durham.
4 *The Great Thanksgiving (Musical setting B, found on page 18 in the hymnal.) *The Lord s Prayer (number 895 in the hymnal, in unison) Sharing of the Bread and Wine All those who have become members of Christ s body through baptism and seek to be united with God and at peace with their neighbor are invited to receive communion. Wine is used for communion. The tradition as understood at Duke Chapel is that the Holy Spirit makes Christ fully present in both the bread and the wine. If you receive only the bread, be assured that you are nonetheless in full communion with Christ and the Church. If you have a gluten allergy, those serving communion nearest to the Memorial Chapel will be ready to serve you gluten-free wafers and wine on request. You may also come forward to receive a blessing, indicated by crossing your arms over your chest. If you would like to receive individual anointing with oil and prayers for healing, ministers will be in the Memorial Chapel during communion.
