October Newsletter Please, use this for reference through the month and to prompt your prayers for the Cathedral and all that we seek to do in God s service. Large print versions of this Newsletter are available. Please ask a member of Select Vestry or a Verger if you would like one. Dean: The Very Revd John Dobson Cathedral Office: In Residence: Canon Paul Greenwell Website:

A Note from the Dean The Cathedral s monthly Newsletter: a new channel of communication This newsletter may not seem very sophisticated, but it represents a whole new approach to communicating much of what is happening, and about to happen, in the life of Ripon Cathedral. People engage with Cathedral news in so many different ways, of course. The website, Facebook, Twitter, local and regional media, and word of mouth all play their part. The weekly pew slip has come to be an invaluable source of information for regular members of the congregation and those who access it on the website. We have come to realise, however, that there is so much to report in the pew slip that it has almost become a weekly journal or magazine. So, we have decided to try something different. From this month, the Cathedral will publish the monthly Newsletter. This will contain information about services and events that are happening within the Cathedral over those weeks, as well as other news, community information and advanced notices. This will be published for the first Sunday of each month, with copies available throughout the month, as well as being posted on the website. In addition, there will be a short Pew Sheet produced for each Sunday, giving information relating to services for that Sunday and the following six days. We will work with the Newsletter and Pew Sheet for a few months, and then review. When the time comes, we will invite your words of encouragement and constructive suggestions. Harvest Thanksgiving Harvest Thanksgiving is one of those features of the year that people enjoy, often having fond memories from childhood. The traditions that surround it suggest an earlier, more rustic age, however contemporary we attempt to make our reflections and message. The message of harvest is always contemporary, though, reminding us that all we are and need for daily living come as gifts from God. The Book of Deuteronomy reveals how Moses charged the Israelites to keep an annual act of thanksgiving in response to God s providence. Once they had entered the promised land - a rich and fertile land, a land flowing with milk and honey - they were to take a tenth of their harvest to the priest as a way of showing gratitude to God. This was also a means by which the alien and poor would be catered for, as was leaving sufficient at the edge of the fields for gleaning. Gratitude to God was combined with compassion for the less fortunate. Through our payment of taxes and support of charity, we do the same today. The harvest gifts that we bring are therefore mainly symbolic, and hugely important as a result. For those who will benefit from them through the Foodbank, they will be both essential nourishment and, hopefully, as symbol of God s love shown through the generosity of those who do not take for granted his providence and their good fortune. The Licensing of Readers Monday, 3rd October sees the licensing of readers for the Ripon Episcopal Area take place in the Cathedral. We are hosting this service not as the Cathedral, but as the Parish Church of two of the newly licensed readers and of one already-established reader who is transferring to the Cathedral from another parish. John Baldini and

Michelle Dearlove have just completed their training course and are to be congratulated on this significant achievement. Taking time out of busy lives to attend weekly seminars and seasonal weekends, as well as engaging in parish placements, is not a trivial thing. Yvonne Jefferies, with her family, has been worshipping at the Cathedral for some time. It is natural, then, that she should wish to exercise her reader ministry here and we are delighted that she is doing so. Already, Yvonne has taken on the chairmanship of our new C3 Group promoting our community engagement. Please, do pray for John, Michelle and Yvonne, and for all the readers, newly licensed and well-established, who serve throughout the Diocese. The Feast of Saint Wilfrid: Patronal Eucharist and Founders and Benefactors Service On Sunday, 16th October we will celebrate the Feast of our founder and one of our two patron saints, St. Wilfrid. At 10.30am, Bishop James will preside and preach at our Patronal Eucharist. The 3.30pm service that day will be one in which we give thanks to God for those who have founded and supported this Cathedral through its thirteen centuries. This includes celebrating the contribution of those who provide support today through their generous contribution of time, skills and money. All members of the Cathedral congregations, volunteers, and those who provide financial support are warmly invited to join us. Light refreshments will be served afterwards. Congratulations to Imogen Morgan We were delighted to learn that Imogen Morgan, daughter of Nick and Kate, has been offered the organ scholarship at Selwyn College, Cambridge from 2017, together with an offer of a place to read Music. Not only was Imogen a Ripon chorister and founder-member of the Cathedral Consort, but her formative organ lessons were on the Cathedral organ under Edmund Aldhouse. Andrew Bryden was also a great encouragement to her, as Tim Harper has been more recently. Imogen s parents write, The music department of the Cathedral have our heartfelt thanks for their help in nurturing Imogen's talent, but also we are grateful that the whole Cathedral community encouraged her and helped her faith grow alongside her musicianship. It seems that Ripon Cathedral is not only growing and nurturing priests, but is sending out organists to serve God's Church too! And for that we all rejoice! The Feast of All Saints and the Commemoration of the Faithful departed On Sunday, 30th October, we shall celebrate the Feast of All Saints with a 10.30am Sung Eucharist. This is a feast in which we praise God for all those people, known and unknown, who through the centuries have revealed something of God and his kingdom in the midst of life in this world. That afternoon at 3.30pm we hold our annual All Souls Requiem Eucharist. Names of our loved ones who have died can be included in the prayers at that service. A sheet will be available on the day to enable us to record their names. With my very best wishes Dean John

Parish Matters C3: Cathedral Community Connections Salvation Army Food Bank A few updates for your shopping for the Food Bank: please whenever possible buy things in packets rather than tins. Many of the recipients come on foot or public transport and bags of heavy tins are hard to carry. What is needed in particular this month are: UHT milk, fruit juice, pasta sauces, ready made custard, biscuits. And it is never too early to begin to think about helping people to celebrate Christmas. Any Christmas treats with a sell by date of late December, or small gifts for children or teens. Thank you so much for your support. It makes such a difference to people s lives!

Christmas Sales at Jennyruth Workshops It may seem early to be thinking about Christmas, but Jennyruth Workshops may be able to make the perfect gift just to your specifications! Jennyruth Workshops, a place where local people who have learning disabilities gain confidence, skills, dignity and a sense of well being, invite you to make your Christmas purchases from them.
