A Note from the Dean Welcome to the Cathedral. A special welcome if you are joining us for the first time. Please, complete a Welcome Card if you would like to give us your contact details. Counting down the days to Ripon Cathedral Revealed A Festival of Flowers, Music, Spirituality, Food and Drink. Friday 29 th April Monday 2nd May We are now counting down the days to the Cathedral Festival. It is promising to be a wonderful celebration of all that the Cathedral is and that we stand for as a Church for the Diocese and region. Please, do come along to make the most of it and encourage your family and friends to do the same. We wouldn t want anyone to miss out! Last Thursday evening, we hosted a Pre-Festival Concert in which over one-hundredand-sixty primary and secondary school children showed us what great talent and enthusiasm for music exists amongst young people within the region. The concert was a credit to those teachers who are working with Pateley Bridge Area Wide Opportunity Band, the Bridge, Boroughbridge Area Primary Orchestras, and the choirs of Ripon Grammar School. The whole event was hugely enjoyed by the hundreds of people who came and I am very grateful to Canon Elizabeth for organising it. After today, of course, there will be great works of preparation in the Cathedral before the Festival Preview Evening can take place on Thursday. This obviously means that the Cathedral may not be functioning quite as normal. Please do note, though, that services will be happening as usual. If you have not yet booked to attend the Jazz Preview Evening, it is not too late. At that we shall be unveiling our Cathedral vision, including all the plans for developing our mission and buildings. There will then be on show throughout the weekend, with brochures available for people to take away. Members of Chapter and the Strategy Steering Group will be available throughout the weekend to chat with visitors about the ways in which we believe God is calling us to grow his kingdom and be a Cathedral able to serve this diocese and region in the twenty-first century. There will also be some feedback slips for people to share their reflections and thoughts with us. We are keen to know what you think. Please, do also remember that the Festival includes a Festal Eucharist with Bishop Nick and Bishop James on Sunday at 10.30am and a Festival Songs of Praise with the Cathedral Choir and brass ensemble at 4.30pm. It is worth remembering that all our celebrations, visions and plans are only possible because of the Easter Faith that we continue to celebrate today and the grace and faithfulness of the God whom we seek to worship and serve. And I am also very aware that next weekend s festival is only possible because of the talents and enthusiasm of all the people who are working hard to make it happen, including congregation members, paid staff and many volunteers. Please, pray for them and for Ripon Cathedral Revealed to be a blessing to the whole Cathedral Community, the churches of the Diocese, the City of Ripon and the people of the region.

Creator God, you reveal your love for us in Jesus and sustain us by your Holy Spirit; by your grace, open our eyes to your presence and our ears to your call, that united with our patrons St. Peter and St. Wilfrid and in the whole community of Ripon Cathedral we may serve your will and see your kingdom grow in this City and Diocese; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen Pentecost and Canon Elizabeth s Last Service Canon Elizabeth s last service before retirement will be the Festal Eucharist on Pentecost, Sunday 15 th May at 10.30am. The PCC invites you to a wine and nibbles celebration after the service. Ripon Episcopal Area Songs of Praise will take place that same afternoon, with refreshments beginning at 3.30pm and the service itself beginning at 4.30pm. Bishop James will be leading this with the help of a brass band. The Cathedral s Birthday Book for the Queen We are all keen to join in the celebrations that are taking place this year for the Queen s 90 th Birthday. We at the Cathedral, with the Lord-Lieutenant for North Yorkshire, will be hosting a service for the whole county on the weekend of the Queen s official birthday Sunday 12 th June at 3.30pm. I am delighted that we now have the Queen s Birthday Book in the Cathedral, providing an opportunity for people from the local and regional communities to send our own personal message to the Queen. This will remain in the Cathedral until the Queen s official birthday Sunday 12 th June when we will be holding the Lord- Lieutenant s service, a county-wide celebration for the Queen s birthday. The Mayor s Installation and change to service times One of the distinctive things about Ripon Cathedral is that it sets aside one stall in the Quire for the use of the City s Mayor. This is a long standing tradition which speaks of the partnership that is desirable between church and civic authorities for the wellbeing of the whole community. This is certainly very much in keeping with our new vision for the on-going mission of the Cathedral in the twenty-first century. The installation of the new Mayor, Councillor Adrian Morgan, will take place on Sunday 8 th May at 11.15am in the Cathedral. This requires the Choral Eucharist to take place an hour earlier than usual at 9.30am and this service will be in the Quire rather than in the Nave. The Children s Church will also take place at 9.30am that morning. Please pray for Adrian as he prepares to become Mayor and also for the City s Council and the other Councils of the district and region that they may be effective in serving the common good. With my very best wishes, Dean John

Collect Almighty God, who through your only-begotten Son Jesus Christ have overcome death and opened to us the gate of everlasting life: grant that, as by your grace going before us you put into our minds good desires, so by your continual help we may bring them to good effect; through Jesus Christ our risen Lord. First Reading A reading from Acts of the Apostles The apostles and the believers who were in Judea heard that the Gentiles had also accepted the word of God. So when Peter went up to Jerusalem, the circumcised believers criticized him, saying, Why did you go to uncircumcised men and eat with them? Then Peter began to explain it to them, step by step, saying, I was in the city of Joppa praying, and in a trance I saw a vision. There was something like a large sheet coming down from heaven, being lowered by its four corners; and it came close to me. As I looked at it closely I saw four-footed animals, beasts of prey, reptiles, and birds of the air. I also heard a voice saying to me, Get up, Peter; kill and eat. But I replied, By no means, Lord; for nothing profane or unclean has ever entered my mouth. But a second time the voice answered from heaven, What God has made clean, you must not call profane. This happened three times; then everything was pulled up again to heaven. At that very moment three men, sent to me from Caesarea, arrived at the house where we were. The Spirit told me to go with them and not to make a distinction between them and us. These six brothers also accompanied me, and we entered the man s house. He told us how he had seen the angel standing in his house and saying, Send to Joppa and bring Simon, who is called Peter; he will give you a message by which you and your entire household will be saved. And as I began to speak, the Holy Spirit fell upon them just as it had upon us at the beginning. And I remembered the word of the Lord, how he had said, John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit. If then God gave them the same gift that he gave us when we believed in the Lord Jesus Christ, who was I that I could hinder God? When they heard this, they were silenced. And they praised God, saying, Then God has given even to the Gentiles the repentance that leads to life. [ ] This is the word of the Lord All Thanks be to God Psalm 148 O PRAISE the Lord of heaven : praise him in the height. 2. Praise him, all ye angels of his : praise him, all his host. 3. Praise him, sun and moon : praise him, all ye stars and light. 4. Praise him, all ye heavens : and ye waters that are above the heavens. 5. Let them praise the Name of the Lord : for he spake the word, and they were made; he commanded, and they were created. 6. He hath made them fast for ever and ever : he hath given them a law which shall not be broken.

7. Praise the Lord upon earth : ye dragons, and all deeps; 8. Fire and hail, snow and vapours : wind and storm, fulfilling his word; 9. Mountains and all hills : fruitful trees and all cedars; 10. Beasts and all cattle : worms and feathered fowls; 11. Kings of the earth and all people : princes and all judges of the world; 12. Young men and maidens, old men and children, praise the Name of the Lord : for his Name only is excellent, and his praise above heaven and earth. 13. He shalt exalt the horn of his people; all his saints shall praise him : even the children of Israel, even the people the serveth him. Second Reading A reading from the book of Revelation I, John, saw a new heaven and a new earth; for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more. And I saw the holy city, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, See, the home of God is among mortals. He will dwell with them; they will be his peoples, and God himself will be with them; 4he will wipe every tear from their eyes. Death will be no more; mourning and crying and pain will be no more, for the first things have passed away. And the one who was seated on the throne said, See, I am making all things new. Also he said, Write this, for these words are trustworthy and true. Then he said to me, It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. To the thirsty I will give water as a gift from the spring of the water of life. [ ] This is the word of the Lord All Thanks be to God Gradual Hymn Ancient & Modern Paschal Feast! Upon the cross Jesus gave himself to save us. Sin s sad leaven throw away: Break the bread of life he gave us. Alleluia! 3 Christ is risen from the grave, all who sleep in death awaking. First fruit of the harvest field: now our Easter dawn is breaking. Alleluia! 2 Risen again, our living Lord death s dominion now has shattered. Now we share his risen life, hell s dread powers for ever scattered. Alleluia! 4 As through man death comes to all, so has man unlocked death s prison. As an Adam all are dead, so in Christ shall all be risen. Alleluia! Words & Music: Edwin Le Grice ( ) Gospel Reading Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John During the supper, when Judas had gone out, Jesus said, Now the Son of Man has been glorified, and God has been glorified in him. If God has been glorified in him,

God will also glorify him in himself and will glorify him at once. Little children, I am with you only a little longer. You will look for me; and as I said to the Jews so now I say to you, Where I am going, you cannot come. I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another. [13/ 31-35] This is the Gospel of the Lord All Praise to you, O Christ Offertory Hymn Ancient & Modern 220 Word that formed creation, earth and sea and sky; Word that brings salvation, Word that will not die; speak now in us that we might hear your call; Living Word of Jesus, sound within us all. Love that formed and named us, filled this clay with breath; Love that seeks and claims us, Love beyond all death; come now and fire the life that flows from you; Love that raised up Jesus, raise us up anew. Song of joy and wonder, sound so wild and free; voice of wind and thunder, boundless as the sea; Music of God, the love that casts out fear; Song that sang in Jesus, sing within us here. God of all creation, form our hearts anew; God of our salvation, lead us home to you; Spirit, inspire our hearts to hear your call; living God of Jesus, come renew us all! Motet Words & Music: Marty Haugen (b. 1950) Come, my way, come, my truth, come, my life: such a way as gives us breath: such a truth as ends all strife: such a life as killeth death. Come, my light, my feast, my strength: such a light as shows a feast: such a feast as mends in length: such a strength as makes his guest. Come, my joy, my love, my heart: such a joy as none can move: such a love as none can part: such a heart as joys in love. Come, my way: come, my truth, come, my love. Prayer after Communion Eternal God, whose Son Jesus Christ is the way, the truth, and the life: grant us to walk in his way, to rejoice in his truth, and to share his risen life; who is alive and reigns, now and for ever.

Welcome We welcome into the Cathedral community children who have been baptised here recently. The children are given a Bible. All There is one Lord, one faith, one baptism: by one Spirit we are all baptized into one body. We welcome you into the fellowship of faith; we are children of the same heavenly Father; we welcome you. Final Hymn Ancient & Modern You shall go out with joy and come again in peace; the mountains and the hills shall sing and never cease; the Son of God is ris n again, his love has conquered death s domain. 3 The Word, like rain or snow, has come down from above, and now reveals to all God s purposes of love; the Word made flesh, once dead, now lives, new life to all he freely gives. 2 The trees in every field shall clap their hands, and say Come shout aloud, and help us celebrate this day! Jesus, the King, has burst the grave, and lives once more to heal and save. 4 The myrtle for the briar, the cypress for the thorn, shall rise to tell the world of its awaking dawn. Jesus, the Life, the Truth, the Way, has ushered in God s great new day. Words: N. T. Wright (b. 1948) Music: NEH 114 You are warmly invited to stay for coffee or juice after the 10.30am Service and Children s Church pm Holy Eucharist (1662 Book of Common Prayer) President: Canon Ruth Hind 2.00 pm St George s Day Service 3.30 pm First Festal Evensong of Mark the Evangelist Responses Ayleward Hymns: 163, A&M 204 Setting Collegium Regale Howells Psalm: 19 Anthem Blessed be the God and Father Wesley Preacher Canon Paul Voluntary Toccata Vierne

Hymn Ancient & Modern 204 If Christ had not been raised from death our faith would be in vain, our preaching but a waste of breath, our sin and guilt remain. But now the Lord is risen indeed; he rules in earth and heaven: his gospel meets a world of need in Christ we are forgiven. If Christ still lay within the tomb then death would be the end, and we should face our final doom with neither guide nor friend. But now the Saviour is raised up, so when a Christian dies we mourn, yet look to God in hope in Christ the saints arise! If Christ had not been truly raised his Church would live a lie; his name should nevermore be praised, his words deserve to die. But now our great Redeemer lives; through him we are restored: his word endures, his Church revives in Christ, our risen Lord. Anthem Words: & Music Christopher Idle (b. 1938) Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy, hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance incorruptible and undefiled, that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you, who are kept by the power of God, through faith unto salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation. Pass the time of your sojourning here in fear. Love one another with a pure heart fervently, see that ye love one another: being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God. For all flesh is as grass, and all the glory of man as the flower of grass. The grass withereth, and the flower thereof falleth away: but the word of the Lord endureth for evermore. Amen.
