3 Activities at St. James s St. James s Flower Guild If you love flowers and flower arranging, join us at our next Flower Guild meeting. The Guild meets on the second Tuesday of each month at 7.45 in Church House. We are NAFAS affiliated (National Association of Flower Arranging Societies) and our demonstrations and displays are of very high standard. Our Flower Guild is also responsible creating and maintaining the flower arrangements in the church. For more information about the Guild, please contact Jenny Pryra on The Lighthouse (St. James s Sunday School) Our Sunday School meets during the 9.30 service for a story and craft activities. During Communion, the children are able to go up to the altar rail for a blessing or to receive Holy Communion. On the first Sunday of the month we have a Family Eucharist, giving the children the chance to sit and worship with their families. On the third Sunday of the month the children go over to Church House for fun and games at Fireworks. For more information contact Vicki, vicki@busheyparish.org St. James s Bell Ringers The St James s bell ringers ring both in St James s tower and other churches across Hertfordshire. 9 What is Pilgrim? Pilgrim is a major new teaching and discipleship resource from the Church of England. It aims to help every local church create a place where people can explore the Christian faith together and see how it can be lived out each day. Pilgrim takes a different approach to other Christian programmes. It approaches the great issues of faith not through persuasion, but participation in a pattern of contemplation and discussion with a group of fellow travellers. Pilgrim is comprised of two stages: the Follow stage for those very new to faith, and the Grow stage for those who want to go further. Pilgrim s approach It starts at the very beginning Pilgrim assumes very little understanding or knowledge of the Christian faith. It focuses on Jesus Christ Pilgrim aims to equip people to follow Jesus Christ as disciples in the whole of their lives. It flows from the Scriptures The primary focus of each session is a group of people engaging with the Bible together. It draws deeply from the Christian tradition In the Early Church, the Christian faith was taught by the transmission of key texts which summed up the heart of the Christian message. Pilgrim restores this approach for the twenty-first century. It honours the Anglican way and its many streams Pilgrim has been developed as a specifically Anglican resource which aims to cater for every tradition in the Church of England. For more information about the Pilgrim Course please speak to Fr. Graham 8
10 Sermon Series for the Autumn in SJ & SP - Growing in Christ (this series aims to suggest approaches to being a sustainable, growing church) 4 th October: Harvest Festival What does harvesting mean for our church? 11 th October: Working in the garden What are the time-implications for nurturing a growing church? 18 th October: Feeding and treating the growth How do we fertilize our faith? 25 th October: Planting the Word deep within Formed and fed by the Word of God 9

14 St Edward the Confessor National Pilgrimage Saturday 17 October 2015 from 0900 The annual pilgrimage day offers a unique opportunity to visit the Abbey along with other pilgrims to experience its beauty and space in a prayerful atmosphere. Most importantly, all our pilgrims will have the opportunity to pray at the Shrine of St Edward - the only shrine in this country which still contains the body of the saint. All our pilgrims are offered a prayer tour which takes them into every part of the Abbey, its precincts and gardens - so you will see the stunning Lady Chapel, the Royal Tombs, Poets Corner, the Chapter House, the Museum and the College Garden which now has a special herb garden where you can sit on a Camomile bench and take in the fragrant scents of the herbs and flowers. Activities for children will be offered in the Education Centre and around the Abbey and its precincts. School groups are very welcome. During the course of the day priests will be on duty for individual spiritual counselling and the Sacrament of Reconciliation. In addition there will be regular opportunities to renew Baptism Promises and to participate in Healing Liturgies with the Laying on of Hands and Anointing, a lecture will be given on the life of St Edward, and walking pilgrims will be welcomed with a foot washing rite. Timing: 0900 Abbey opens for Pilgrims 1130 Festival Eucharist 1500 Evensong with Procession All are welcome and there is no charge 13
15 Changes may occur during the year and will be posted on the website ( and in the monthly parish magazine 14
