2 A Note from the Dean Welcome to the Cathedral. A special welcome if you are joining us for the first time. Please, complete a Welcome Card if you would like to give us your contact details. All Saints and All Souls In our worship this morning we keep and celebrate the Feast of All Saints, an opportunity to acknowledge and celebrate the contribution of holy men and women to the life of faith and the mission of the church over the centuries. We particularly thank God for those whose names are not remembered, who have not become famous, and yet who have revealed something of heaven in earthly living. You can request the names of loved ones who have died be included in the prayers: simply print the names on the sheets to be found near the south transept. Gr wi g G d s Ki gd m: publishi g a i terim rep rt pr gress I am delighted that today we are publishing the promised interim report on the Cathed a s G wi g G d s Ki gd process. A period of consultation began last October when we began to ask what God is calling us to be and do. In February this year, we published the first response, G wi g G d s Ki gd. This exp ai ed that we be ieve G d is ca i g us t c ti ue Ch ist s issi f g wi g his ki gd ea th, a d desc ibed the f u ai a eas f issi by which we seek t d that: G wi g the Cathed a s w shippi g community; promoting our spiritual and built heritage; serving the diocesan bishop in mission; engaging with the issues and needs of the world. Over the last eight months a huge amount of work has been done by four strategy review groups to develop our vision and planning in these four main areas of mission. A fifth group has begun to explore how we will resource the developments. The ep t bei g pub ished t day, A Sai ts Day, gives a i sight i t the visi a d the aims and objectives by which it would become a reality. Please, do ensure that you take a copy with you; read it and continue to pray that together we might develop into the Cathedral that God wishes us to be. Also, please do share your comments with us, we value what you think. The Bish p s Visit to Sri Lanka Our diocesan bishop, Bishop Nick Baines, has been paying a visit to Sri Lanka with which this diocese has a link. Here is another opportunity to read some of what he has written about his experience.

3 We have just spent two days in the far north of Sri Lanka. This is where the civil war saw its bloody conclusions in Jaffna in 1995 and Kilinochchi only five years ago. Having met a range of civic and Christian leaders in Jaffna and heard their stories, the tragedy of that civil war is etched in the ruins of homes and the lives that were torn apart in them. The scars of war cannot be avoided the destruction and all it represents is there to see. And, as the Bishop of Colombo said, the enormity is hinted at when you walk into random ruins and find the remains of a child's doll. A family died there. Probably someone else's war. This isn't the time or place to go into the nature of the conflict itself. But, the Church of Ceylon (which we are visiting for the first time) exercises its ministry of reconciliation in the conflicted context of the war's aftermath. And its stress is not on working for justice for one side or one community or one language/ethnic group; rather, its concern is to establish justice for all and bring healing to the whole country. Like the church in most places, this work is done mostly on the quiet often under the radar. Not all good and effective work is done through a microphone, but in the hidden business of bringing people together, creating the space for a different sort of conversation with a different sort of vocabulary. I am only a few days into this visit and have an explosion of images, sounds and stories in my mind and will continue to think around it all. Today's judgments might well be challenged by tomorrow's experience or the weekend's encounters. So, I continue to listen and look and learn. We pray for Bishop Nick and those travelling with him, for the links between us and the Church in Sri Lanka, and for reconciliation between divided parties in every land and community. 6 Forthcoming Events within the Cathedral Community Monday 9 th November 7.30pm Cathedral Concert Society. Thursday 12 th November 7.30pm PEGS at Thorpe Prebend House. This Autumn PEGS, our Parish Discussion Group, will explore the idea of the Bible as the Word of God. We will be thinking about what the Bible is, how it was given to us, how we should read it, and what authority it may have over our life and decisions. The sessions will combine simple prayer, Bible reflection in the lectio divina style, an article by a modern writer, and time for questions and reflection. Future dates: 26 th November and 3 rd December. If you have not been to PEGS before this might be an ideal time to give it a try. For further details contact Canon Ruth.
