Friday, 24 October George Potts in a cabaret performance Under the Radar, II at 7.30 p.m. in the Parish House Sunday, 2 November Discussion of Chapters 1-3 Meeting Jesus Again for the First Time at Noon in the Library Evensong for All Saints' Sunday at 5.00 p.m. Saturday, 8 November Night of 1000 Pies, in the Parish House, benefiting Kent Affordable Housing Saturday, 22 November Annual Christmas Bazaar a.m p.m. From the Rector Someone asked me if it would be all right to invite people who are not members of the parish to bring their household animals for the Blessing of the Animals on Sunday, and of course the answer is Yes! We are happy to bless one and all! The Sunday nearest the Feast of St Francis of Assisi (4 October) has become the Sunday on which the creatures of God who are not human receive blessings through God's human creatures, and Fr David and I are very much looking forward to the revival of this custom here at St Andrew's. St Francis was canonized 1228, only two years after his death because his impact on the world around him was already recognized as having been profound. The son of a wealthy merchant, he had enjoyed a life of parties and had also tried (with conspicuous lack of success) to make a name for himself as a soldier. His soldiering, however, brought him into contact with the poor in ways that his life of privilege could have minimized, and to the strenuous opposition of his family he renounced his inheritance and devoted himself to the service of those in need and of those, such as the lepers, whom many did their best to avoid. He took pity on animals whose owners beat or mistreated them, believing that they in their ways could live lives of blessing even as human beings can. The Order of Friars Minor --the Franciscan Friars-- that he founded has as its ideal a life of poverty, simplicity, and service to any in need, and Francis's humility was such that he chose both to think of himself and to describe himself as 'the least of God's servants'. As his speedy canonization suggests, however, his humility and self-sacrifice made him a great example to others indeed... It is little wonder, given Francis's love and care for all that God has made, that his feast is the occasion when we have the invitation to give particular thanks for those whose lives --human or not-- are important to us and to remember that we need to bless them as they bless us. As we gather on the lawn at Noon on Sunday, please remember to allow our non-human friends enough space to be at some ease with all that is happening around them.

3 Twelve Step Groups Tuesdays & Thursdays 7:30 a.m. A.A. Meetings Wednesdays 7:00 p.m. A.A. for Women Thursdays 7:00 p.m. Al-Anon All Meetings are in the Parish House on the upper level. Parish Staff The Revd Roger B.White, Rector The Revd Dr David K. McIntosh, Priest Associate Thomas W. Holcombe, Organist & Director of Choirs Margie O'Brien, Director of the Children's Choir Maureen Griffin, Parish Administrator Ryan Foote, Peter Brodhead, and Lori Fedewa Coordinators of the Church School Bill McLaren, Sexton Randy Osolin, Verger Announcements Please help with the light refreshments for the Coffee &... after the service on 12 October! Our friends from the First Congregationalist Church will be paying their annual visit to us and will be worshipping at St Andrew's on that day, and their Pastor, the Reverend Melinda M. Keck will be our preacher. Plates of sandwiches, cakes, or cookies will help to make the 'board' all the more inviting! Reminders about pledges made to the Capital Campaign... for the repainting of the exterior of the church building and the renovation of its interior have gone out to those who responded to the appeal. It would be most helpful if those who send in contributions to the Capital Fund would prominently identify that their cheques are for the 'Capital Campaign' so that those who count the monies assign them to the correct account. Reminders about pledges made to the Operating Fund... will be going out from the Treasurer at the end of the third quarter of the year. The Officers and Vestry would be grateful if those who have made pledge would check to be certain that their payments are current. The Vestry voted to make Elaine Henry the Assistant Treasurer of the parish... at their meeting on 21 September, and we are grateful to Elaine for agreeing to help out in this way! The Kent Singers will be holding their rehearsals... in the nave on Wednesday evenings from beginning on 3 September. The Bishops' Open... the golf tournament benefiting Camp Washington, will be on Thursday, 9 October, at the Tunxis Plantation Golf Course in Farmington, with registration beginning at 9.00 a.m. More information is available at Marcus Borg's Meeting Jesus Again for the First Time... has been postponed to November and December. On 2 November, we will discuss Chapters 1-3, and on 7 December Chapters 4-6. Meetings will be held in the

4 Library in the Parish House. Copies will be available at The House of Books and all are welcome to attend the discussions. Another Way to Help the Kent Food Bank...
