3 Remembering Lent Throughout 2018 we will be commemorating two centenaries: women s suffrage and the end of the First World War. During Lent we are working with a theme of Remembrance as we walk the forty days; this will include reflections on the lives of women in the bible. In addition to the daily cycle of prayer and worship which continues at the cathedral throughout Lent, details of which can be found in the Services & Music booklet, we hope the cathedral will offer opportunities to deepen your Lenten commitment this year. What is Lent? Lent the great forty days of preparation for the Feast of Easter begins on Ash Wednesday, a solemn day of repentance and forgiveness. As we receive the cross of ashes on our foreheads, we are reminded of our mortality and our utter dependence upon God our Father. With this in mind, Christians are encouraged throughout Lent to examine and review their spiritual lives, traditionally focusing on three things: Prayer Fasting Almsgiving (charitable giving) Holy Week and Easter for details see the back of this booklet The beautiful Easter Vigil service will start at 9.00pm on Easter Eve, with a bonfire in the cloister from which we will light the brand new Paschal Candle. This service will be followed by fireworks and a glass of something sparkling in the Cathedral garden! The Bishop of Swindon will be with us for the celebrations on Easter Day, when he will confirm a number of choristers and members of the Cathedral congregation. As Easter approaches, please speak with a member of the clergy should you wish to make your Confession or discuss any other spiritual matter. In the meantime, let us pray that we may be given the grace to keep a Holy Lent. The Revd Canon Nicola Stanley Canon Precentor bristol-cathedral.co.uk 3
4 SACRED SPACE Remembering Prayer On Sunday 25 February, at 6.00pm, a Lenten-themed Sacred Space draws us towards the Cross. This candlelit reflective service with Taizé chant is followed by suitably Lenten refreshments. Remembering Fasting Break your fast with a communal Lent Lunch of soup, bread, and cheese after the Cathedral Eucharist. Sign up at coffee after any Sunday Eucharist beforehand. 6 per head, all proceeds go to Christian Aid. Sunday 18 February Sunday 25 February Sunday 4 March Sunday 18 March bristol-cathedral.co.uk 4
5 LENT LUNCHES Remembering Women During the Lent Lunches, members of clergy will speak on biblical women Eve Sunday 18 February Canon Nicola Stanley The Woman who Anoints Jesus Sunday 25 February Revd Sarah Evans Mary Magdalene Sunday 4 March The Dean The Blessed Virgin Mary Sunday 18 March Canon Martin Gainsborough THERE S SOMETHING ABOUT MARY Part of the undivided lecture series Bristol Cathedral has not one but two chapels dedicated to the Virgin Mary. In the period just before and during Lent, we will explore the significance of Mary for Christians across the generations, including her significance in the life of Bristol Cathedral. With the help of accomplished speakers and looking at Marian devotion in music and in art, in history and contemporary culture, we will ask what Mary meant to pilgrims of the past and what she means for us today. Tuesday 6 February Tuesday 20 February Tuesday 27 February Tickets are 4, including refreshments, and are available from the cathedral website. Remembering Scripture Join us on Saturday 17 March for a special morning with Mark s Gospel. The morning will include a full reading of the Gospel, from beginning to end, and will pose the question: How does Mark challenge us today? This special reading will start at 10.30am and will last for around 100 minutes. There will be no spoken introduction, but notes from a discussion led by The Dean of Bristol will be available beforehand, along with copies of the script. All are invited to attend. This is a wonderful opportunity for all people, whether familiar with Mark s Gospel or not, to hear this remarkable testament in a new and invigorating way. Mark writes with great urgency, not to be confused with speed, and hearing the Gospel read straight through, without the usual chapter and verse breaks, gives a far better sense of this. Revd Canon Neville Boundy bristol-cathedral.co.uk 5
6 Remembering the Stations This series of meditations takes place as we walk around the Cathedral reflecting on Christ s Passion through the Stations of the Cross. This meditative service will take place at 12noon every Friday lunchtime followed by the 12.30pm Eucharist. Remembering Cinema As an alternative Lenten devotion, the cathedral is holding several cinema events during Lent. CHARIOTS OF FIRE 7.00pm, Saturday 3 March In association with Bristol Film Festival. Academy award winner Chariots of Fire is a 1981 British historical drama film. It tells the true story of two athletes in the 1924 Olympics: Eric Liddell, a devout Scottish Christian who runs for the glory of God, and Harold Abrahams, an English Jew who runs to overcome prejudice. DAYS OF HEAVEN 6.15pm Wednesday 7 March Part of the electric shadows in the cathedral series, with an introduction by Dr Charlotte Crofts. About the film A screen poem about life in America at the turn of the century. A story of love and murder told through the voice of a child and expressive images of nature in A steelworker flees Chicago after a fight with his boss; he takes his little sister and girlfriend with him. About the speaker Dr Crofts is a lecturer at the University of West England, and the founder of the Cary Grant Festival, celebrating the life and work of Archie Leach, the Bristol-born legendary actor who moved to America and changed his name. For more information on either screening, or to buy tickets, please visit our website. bristol-cathedral.co.uk 6
