This month s feature film is Mother Teresa" starring Golden Globe winner Olivia Hussey in a powerful portrayal of the selfless missionary who brought hope, love and salvation to the poorest of the poor. A shrewd diplomat and an indomitable force, Mother Teresa is unwilling to accept what others deem impossible, fearlessly fighting for the unloved and the forgotten. Her good works transcend hardships and ultimately earns her international acclaim, including the Nobel Peace Prize. The small miracles and humble triumphs of Mother Teresa will inspire you in this poignant tale of a modern-day saint. Mark your calendars and see this movie! Free popcorn and soda will be provided. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Some say tomato and some say tomahto you know the old song. What do you say when you arrive at church and see a font prepared, a baby in the wings, the paschal candle burning? Well, maybe you will say that we re having a baptism today, or maybe you say we are having a christening. The proper term is baptism, since that is the name of the sacrament. But the persistent use of christening in our culture, probably from due to the influence of the Episcopal Church, is interesting. Baptism, an ancient word, is from the Greek meaning to dip or to dunk. Christening is an Old English word that describes perfectly well that more than getting splashed with water, the person being baptized is being Christ-ed. No matter what you call it, there s always water involved, and then an anointing with chrism fragrant olive oil consecrated as a sign of Christ s presence poured upon the brow as we say, As Christ was anointed Priest, Prophet, and King, so may you live always as a member of his body, sharing everlasting life. So, in being Christ-ed, you are conformed to his image, your life is expected to be a retelling of his life in miniature and you even though you may be squirming or sleeping are commissioned to be a priest, a prophet, a king. This means that you are called to be one who worships, you are called to speak the truth, you are called to shape the world and exercise right judgment. That is the deepest treasure of our tradition, and every time you gather to celebrate a baptism, you renew your vows precisely so that you can be more Christ-ed. No matter what vocabulary you assign to the liturgy, the key is transformation of the human person in the community of the Body of Christ. James Field, Copyright, J. S. Paluch Co. NEW PARISHIONERS Our warmest welcome to all who celebrate with us, whether long time residents or newly arrived in our parish. If you are not registered, please fill out the registration forms at the back of the church and drop it in the collection basket or at the Pastoral Center. You may also register online at

5 WELCOME TO HOLY NAME OF JESUS PARISH, SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA Page 5 Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time DISCOVERING CHRIST A friend once told me that he lives every day of his life looking for a chance to meet the Lord. I agreed that this was the way I led my life also, until one day when I discovered exactly what he meant. He had been traveling in my neighborhood and had come across a young man, with no shoes on his feet, who was asking people for money outside the local convenience store. He told the young man that he would do what he could to get him some shoes and fresh clothing. And where did he bring this young man to find these shoes and clothes? To my house! I was taken aback when the two arrived at my front door and my friend explained the situation. He told me how excited he was that another day had passed and he found this opportunity to meet the Lord. I was dumbfounded, yet profoundly humbled by the very presence of Christ in my home. I went to my dresser drawer and hesitated briefly as I drew out some clothes I hadn t worn in a long time. Something inside me said to go to the closet. There I pulled out my favorite jeans, a fairly new shirt and sweater, some new underclothes, a pair of shoes and socks. The young man went into the bathroom to change and when he emerged, his face was nothing less than radiant. In the meantime my friend had raided my refrigerator, had made up a to-go meal, and took the young man to a place where he could spend the night. THE CALL ROOTED IN DISCOVERY This experience taught me so much about what it means to be someone who tries to follow Christ. I discovered that in order to get to know Christ more and more, we have to be the ones who are diligently searching for him in the people we encounter every single day of our lives. Today the Lord Jesus asks us to pray that the abundant harvest will have more laborers. Let us pray that more and more people will have the courage to search for Christ in their everyday lives. And perhaps some will hear the voice of the Lord calling them into ordained ministry. Today s Readings: Isaiah 66:10 14c; Psalm 66:1 7, 16, 20; Galatians 6:14 18; Luke 10:1 12, [1 9] READINGS FOR THE WEEK Monday: Gn 28:10-22a; Mt 9:18-26 Tuesday: Gn 32:23-33; Mt 9:32-38 Wednesday: Gn 41:55-57; 42:5-7a, 17-24a; Mt 10:1-7 Thursday: Gn 44:18-21, 23b-29; 45:1-5; Mt 10:7-15 Friday: Gn 46:1-7, 28-30; Mt 10:16-23 Saturday: Gn 49:29-32; 50:15-26a; Mt 10:24-33 Sunday: Dt 30:10-14; Ps 69 or 19; Col 1:15-20; Lk 10:25-37 SAINTS AND SPECIAL OBSERVANCES Sunday: Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Monday: St. Augustine Zhao Rong and his companions Wednesday: St. Benedict Friday: St. Henry Saturday: Blessed Kateri Tekakwitha; Blessed Virgin Mary Kateri Tekakwitha (1656 April 17, 1680), the daughter of a Mohawk warrior and a Christian Algonquin woman, was born in the Mohawk fortress of Ossernenon near present-day Auriesville, New York. At the age of 4 smallpox swept through Ossernenon, and Tekakwitha was left with unsightly scars and poor eyesight. The outbreak took the lives of her brother and both her parents. She was then adopted by her uncle, who was the chief of the Turtle-clan. As the adopted daughter of the chief, she was courted by many of the warriors looking for her hand in marriage. However, during this time she began taking interest in Christianity, which was taught to her by her mother. In 1666, the Marquis Alexandre De Prouville de Tracy burned down Ossernenon. A new fort, Kahnawake, was built on the north side of the Mohawk River in what is now Fonda, New York. While living here, Tekakwitha was converted and baptized in 1676 by Father Jacques de Lamberville, a Jesuit. At her baptism, she took the name "Kateri", a Mohawk pronunciation of "Catherine". Unable to understand her zeal, members of the tribe often chastised her, which she took as a testament to her faith. Because she was persecuted by her Indian kin, which even resulted in threats on her life, she moved to Kahnawake, Canada where she lived a life dedicated to prayer, penitential practices, and care for the sick and aged. In 1679, she took a vow of chastity. A year later, Kateri died at the age of 24. She is called "The Lily of the Mohawks," the "Mohawk Maiden," the "Pure and Tender Lily," and the "Fairest Flower among True Men."

6 WELCOME TO HOLY NAME OF JESUS PARISH, SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA Page 6 Part 3 Whatsoever you do to the least of my brothers...angela Testani As mentioned in the last 2 articles, in the Archdiocese of San Francisco, there is a campaign to address global poverty. When one looks at it all, it feels and looks overwhelming, but it s not. As St. Theresa of the Child Jesus practiced and said Whatever you do, even the smallest of things, to love one another and to honor and give thanks to our Lord, if done with a contrite heart, it is pleasing to our Lord. Fr. Paulinus went to Tanzania in January 2007 along with 3 of his parishioners, and they visited the factory where mosquito nets were made. These nets are treated with a mosquito repellant and are priced at $4.00 each. But these nets alone cannot eradicate malaria. A well established relationship with the local residents and a lot of education, especially in this particular region near Kilimanjaro is needed. From monies raised, Fr. Paulinus & co. bought a microscope and the rest of the money was used to purchase the bed nets. It is only with the use of a microscope that a proper diagnosis of malaria can be done. Through the connections of Fr. Paulinus, the Canossian Sisters and Fr. D Angelo, I will be in Tanzania & Sudan for 3 weeks. I hope to see for myself the need of these people dealing with malaria. When I come back, I hope to share my experiences with the Holy Name community and the Lay Canossians. The Lay Canossians will be addressing and developing a plan to support continued efforts on the treatment of malaria in Africa. But this is not solely a Lay Canossian project. I hope to have our own 7 Now Committee at Holy Name. We have some very talented and interested parishioners who expressed their interest in getting involved with the Millenium Goals. The Holy Father Benedict XVI asks, How can we not think of the millions of people especially women and children, who lack water, food or shelter. Hunger is unacceptable in a world with resources, knowledge and the means available to bring it all to an end. I look forward to sharing my experiences with you. Sincerely In Christ, Angela HOLY NAME SCHOOL SUMMER PLAY YARD RENOVATION PROJECT!
