An overwhelming majority of those in education (principals, lecturers and teachers) say that parents are the primary educators of their children. Parents on the other hand may think that in exchange for the tuition money that is paid to the school, that they may receive assurance that the school will add education to their child. The problem is that this relationship between schools and parents and their students is quite complex and will only be solved through honest discussion. If I were to research modern education (the classroom/the school) I would find many writers that have viewed the school as the real primary (main) educators. Society noted the benefit of organised education around the 14 th century when the printing press was invented. Organised education was widely responsible for everyone having the chance to become literate (starting in the 1500 s), as many religious groups organised reading and writing lessons so that everyone could read the bible for themselves (until then, only church leaders read God s word). Since this time, as education strived to reach its potential and many advancements were credited to education, society has looked to education to provide so much more for its youth. From 1500 until today, as organised education became engrained in society, the somewhat errant view that schools are the real educators has become so deeply engrained that it has become taken for granted as fact. Next term, I will be writing each newsletter piece on the changing face of education and the focus of our school improving the working relationships between parents, teachers and students. I thank parents for their honest approach in bringing issues to myself and the teaching staff this term, as I have found that your feedback at the coalface of education so often accurately identifies what academics cannot. Fact: It is natural for kids to learn all the time. Challenge: Join your kids in their learning these holidays. When they ask a question, strive to always find some kind of answer or research with them. No-brainer: Keep their brains switched on limit the entertainment time (screen time). Adam Borgas Knowledgeable Open-Minded Tuesday, 7th April 2015 Principled Reflective Risk Taker Thinker School Mobile Ph: ANZAC DAY DISPLAY The Waikerie RSL are having a special display in their Hall from 1st April until 30th April to commemorate the 100 years of ANZAC. We welcome school groups, classes or families to visit our museum and the extra display from Monday to Friday from 2pm until 5pm, or the last Sunday in the month, or by appointment with the RSL if you wish to come in the morning. 2 Casual Day We will be having a casual day via gold coin donation on the last day of term, this Friday, 10th April. We ask that all children who wear casual clothing wear adhere to the following guidelines: No Singlets or crop-tops (sun smart attire) No short shorts or mini skirts Appropriate footwear (no thongs, no ugg boots) Appropriate content (no clothing with inappropriate language or images). School News Closing Chapel Please note that closing Chapel for Term 1 will be held on Friday, 10th April at 1:30pm in the Hall. Assembly Please note that following a Public Holiday on a Monday, Assembly will be held on Wednesday that week. This means that Assembly will be held tomorrow, Wednesday, 8th April due to the Easter Monday Public Holiday on the 6th April. Opening Chapel Please be advised that Opening Chapel for Term 2 will be held on Monday, 27th April commencing at 8:50am in the Hall. All welcome. Distribution of the Newsletter This term the Newsletter has been distributed on a fortnightly basis instead of weekly as a trial. Thank you to those parents who posted feedback on our Facebook page indicating their preference. Due to the feedback received, please be advised that as of Term 2, the Newsletter will be distributed weekly. Mid Murray Sports Day Thank you so much to everyone who helped out or baked for the recent Mid Murray Sports Day. We were overwhelmed with the support we received on the day from the school community. 3 Good day Parent / Caregivers, Financial update From the Business Manager Early payment of school fees A high for us this term was the parents/ caregivers that were able to pay their school fees in full by the 2 nd of March Credit Card Payments We were able to start with a direct Credit Card payment system on behalf of the Parents. This is starting to work well and although there were a few hick-up s as we got set up, we are now positively moving forward. I am therefore able to announce that the next fortnightly deductions will be made this week. Our termly payments and our monthly payments will now be running according to the arranged dates. Direct Debits Unfortunately we are still not able to start the process on our side as we need an alternative code to be able to complete the process. We apologise for this. As we are awaiting assistance from the Bank in that regard, parents might make use of the following options to continue with the payment of school fees: - Pay over the counter - Do a payment directly into our bank account: BSB Nr: Account Provide us your Credit Card details and we will do the Credit Card option on your behalf. Uniform A reminder that uniform change over from summer to winter occurs during Term 2. Students are able to wear either the summer or the winter uniform from Week 1 until Week 3 of Term 2, but only winter uniform from Week 4 onwards. NO mixed uniform please (ie, stockings under summer dresses, etc). Uniform is available at McCoy Menswear, McCoy Street, Waikerie. Hope you have a splendid holiday and will be back refreshed and ready for Term 2. Kind Regards Hannelie van Niekerk Business Manager Farewell pastor perry On behalf of the staff and students at Waikerie Lutheran Primary School, we would like to extend our heartfelt thanks and warm wishes to Pastor Perry as he finishes up his time with us in Waikerie as the Pastor of the Waikerie Lutheran Parish. We have been very blessed to have been able to hear God s word from Pastor Perry at Chapel services at WLPS over the past (nearly) 3 years and hope that the he will come and visit from time to time. We pray that God will continue to be with Pastor Perry and the Hart family and bring them many blessings. Good-bye, God bless and good-luck. We will miss you.

4 Corner of Peace In Matthew 18:3 Jesus enlightens us about a little recognized truth. (At least it appears not to be the way of thinking of today s rushed and very busy society!). He tells us And he said: "Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Children are so much more attuned to the peaceful and joyful discipline of simplicity than are many of the sophisticated adults of this post-modern era. I really enjoyed this little parable, and how well it illustrates this point: One day, the father of a very wealthy family took his son on a trip to the country with the express purpose of showing him how poor people live. They spent a couple of days and nights on the farm of what would be considered a very poor family. On their return from their trip, the father asked his son, How was the trip? It was great, Dad. Did you see how poor people live? the father asked. Oh yeah, said the son. So, tell me, what did you learn from the trip? asked the father. The son answered: I saw that we have one dog and they had four. We have a pool that reaches to the middle of our garden and they have a creek that has no end. We have imported lanterns in our garden and they have the stars at night. Our patio reaches to the front yard and they have the whole horizon. We have a small piece of land to live on and they have fields that go beyond our sight. We have servants who serve us, but they serve others. We buy our food, but they grow theirs. We have walls around our property to protect us; they have friends to protect them. The boy s father was speechless. Then his son added, Thanks Dad for showing me how poor we are. It is my prayer that we may all see the richness that is so freely given us in our daily lives, and our peaceful surroundings in our lovely corner of this earth.
