I trust you enjoyed your time with your child/ren over the holiday break. Holidays are a time where new experiences and fun times can be had, relationships can be strengthened and new places can be visited. Most people look forward to holidays with great expectations. For me, I was expecting to spend time with some of my children. This was blown out the window when I was able to spend time with all of my children on the same day! Great Expectations is a classic novel by Charles Dickens. In this novel, the main character Pip, had great expectations to be rich, famous and marry a beautiful woman. He had many struggles along the way, without really meeting all of his expectations. Great expectations can be a part of approaching a new term. Expecting a classroom change or the classroom to be the same as last term; expecting improved work ethics; expecting your friends to be there on day 1; expecting the same school and classroom routines. As soldiers beached their boats on that first ANZAC Day in Gallipoli, there were great expectations put upon each of them. As they enlisted to serve in the Great War, they all had expectations. Christians walk through life with great expectations. The expectation that because of Jesus death on the cross for them and Jesus resurrection on that first Easter, their relationship with God and the forgiveness received, that there is a place in heaven for them. They have this expectation because of the promise given. This can be found in Ephesians 2:8-10 when it says For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God not by works, so that no one can boast. For we are God s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do. Sue Beelitz Interim Principal This day of fun is scheduled for this Sunday, 7th May between 1.30 and 3.00pm in the Environmental Investigation area for 3-6 year olds. You are invited to encourage friends and relatives to attend this day. The weather is looking pretty god at this stage too! Waikerie Lutheran Primary School is a supportive Christ-centred community, equipping each student for life.

Book Fair We will be having our annual Scholastic Book Fair next term on: Thursday, 25th May - 8:30am until 9:00am and 2:00pm-2:30pm Friday, 26th May - 8:30am until 9:00am and 3:00pm until 3:30pm. Apples We have bags locally grown Fuji apples available for purchase from the office for $2.00 per kilogram. Hot Cross Buns We would like to say a huge thank you to Mr Chan Tang who donated the Hot Cross Buns for our students at the end of Term 1. Your generosity is greatly appreciated. Uniform Season Change Over For the first 3 weeks of this term, children may wear either full summer or full winter uniform (no mix and match of uniforms ie tights under the summer dress). As of Monday, 22nd May students are required to wear winter uniform only. SAPSASA Hockey Could all students who are taking part in the SAPSASA Hockey Carnival this Friday, 5th May return their permission form ASAP. School News NAPLAN Testing On Tuesday 9 th, Wednesday 10 th and Thursday 11 th May (Week 2), students in Year 3, 5 and 7 will be undertaking the National Benchmark testing. Please ensure that all students are punctual on these days, as any late attendance for these students will disrupt their testing regime. Friday, 13th May is a catch up day for students who are absent. Uniform Survey Results Thank you to those who filled out the uniform survey towards the end of Term 1. Your feedback is appreciated and is important as it has informed the committee with the voice of the school community as a whole. The survey results from students, parents and staff showed a clear majority of people favoured option 1 having a formal uniform worn on 3 school days and for formal occasions and the sports uniform worn on the 2 designated days for sport each week (which are currently Tuesday and Friday). The uniform committee will now use this information to continue in their review of the uniform. We will keep you posted as progress is made. School Bus Exciting news! WLPS has upgraded the school bus. As a result, we no longer have a use for the original bus. We are looking for expressions of interest for the sale of the bus. Please see the advert in this newsletter for more details. Welcome to Jo Platten We would like to welcome Miss Jo Platten to our school in the capacity of student teacher in Mr Fladrich s Year 3/4 class. We hope that Jo has a rewarding time with us at WLPS. No Buses Advanced Notice Please be advised that the buses will not be running on Friday, 9th June due to school closures at Waikerie High and Waikerie Primary Schools. WOOSHC Week 10 Term 2 WOOSHC has agreed to open for us during our additional school closure week at the end of this term. If you require care during this week, please ring and book in ASAP. Currently there are insufficient bookings for WOOSHC to open for us that week.
3 Technology/Cyber Safety Attachments Last term the Year 5 Class inquired into technology and how it can affect people s wellbeing. As a class we focussed mainly on the technology most frequently used in student s lives today. Attached to each newsletter this term, staff at WLPS will be sharing a number of handouts, newsletters and factsheets relating to technology. Technology changes so quickly these days that it is often hard to keep a foot in the door regarding what to use and how to use it. Please use these handouts to help you; gather a better understanding of what to be aware of in the cyber world conversation starters with your child regarding their safety and well being on line upgrade your security settings as well as your families settings This weeks attachment is a newsletter that comes out each month from the website ThinkUKnow, that parents are welcome to subscribe to. It runs through things to be aware of when using the app feature of live streaming, featured in Facebook Live, Musical.ly, Instagram and a number of other social media. It also looks at vault apps, what they are, how they are used and what to be aware of. Michelle Burns Mechanically sound Air conditioned Seating for 19 people Done just over 264,000km No longer able to carry passengers Ideal to convert into a camper Genuine offers considered All enquiries to David Schmidt on Expressions of Interest For 1992 Toyota Coaster Bus Little Tags Make a Big Impact! Bread tags come in many shapes, sizes and colours. Made of High Impact Polystyrene they have a good recycling value. It takes 200 bread bags full of tags that are packed into 10 black bags or 200kg of tags to bring in enough money to buy one wheelchair. Mary Honeybun founded the organization in 2006 in Cape Town and they provide 2 to 3 wheelchairs to adults and children around South Africa every month!! Having a wheelchair gives the recipient independence and mobility and this makes a big difference to their families as well. Collecting bread tags, even broken ones, makes a difference to our environment too as they are recycled into seedling trays, picture frames, coat hangers and other items. You too can make a difference to the lives of people who are in need of a wheelchair. Save your bread tags and get your families and friends to do so too. The Lowbank Lutheran Church Ladies Guild are collecting these so if you are able to collect some, please bring them into school office.
4 Corner of Peace It seems easy to say do not worry but for most of us it is hard to put into practice. However the more one worries the larger a trouble looms until your little pebble trouble becomes a large mountain in your mind due to constant worrying about it. Added to this, in concentrating on worrying about tomorrow, we then forget to do what needs to be done today and to enjoy the simple but abundant pleasures of this day we are inhabiting (we lose the joy of savouring a cup of tea or coffee; of watching our little ones play; of enjoying your child s hug; of the scent of the garden or bush; and many more daily joys). In my own life I have often found that the very thing I have worried about turned out to be a wonderful blessing instead of a curse. As I have grown older I have learnt to quickly consider what I could do if the trouble occurs, then hand it to God and talk to Him about it. Then I pack it away and continue to live. There are times I slip but then I try to recall how past troubles were resolved without worry and pack it back away. Life has thrown at me death, poverty, illness, living in war and many other situations and God has been true to His promise to bring me though. So welcome back this new term and may you have peace and many blessings. Moira (Chaplain/Pastoral Care) Solo Auditions The auditions for soloists for the Festival of Music will take place at Cobdogla Primary School today, Tuesday 2nd May from 4:00pm. Could all students who have been selected to try out for a solo please ensure they take their signed permission form with them to the audition. Compere Auditions The auditions for compere for the Festival of Music will take place on Tuesday, 30th May (at a venue yet to be determined). A pre-selection audition process will take place at WLPS on Wednesday, 24th May for those students in Year 5, 6 or 7 who would like to audition as a compere.
