1 Lent 28/2/2017 Issue 5 For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Jeremiah 29:11 The delicious aroma of pancakes wafted through the hallways here this morning. Today St Mark s used countless eggs, butter, sugar, a selection of jams and also maple syrup to create a wonderful treat of pancakes. Shrove Tuesday is a day of celebration! Tomorrow is Ash Wednesday, the beginning of the 40 day period that ends with Easter Sunday. Across the world, Christians from various denominations will commemorate the day by fasting, praying or participating in ceremonies where a cross is placed on their foreheads using ash. Many Christians will abstain from something special to them or a particular food or beverage until Easter in recognition of Jesus great sacrifice. These rituals are a symbol of our connection to God and the acknowledgement that despite being created in His image, we are mere mortals who sin rather than get it right. Tomorrow morning Pastor John Ridenour will lead staff in their morning devotion. The ashen cross he will place on my forehead will be a very public reminder of my many shortcomings and that I simply don t measure up faith wise. It certainly isn t easy to admit that I m not perfect but there is a sense of relief in knowing that no one but Jesus is perfect and that each and every one of us has to work at it - that is faith wise. In the end, if we were perfect we might then not feel the need for God. Surely then we wouldn t give Lent a second thought. But then where would we find ourselves? I know where I would find myself - probably lost and even rather lonely. During this Lenten season let us bow down together and acknowledge just how dependent we are on Him! It s only through God, His son Jesus who died for our many sins and the power of the Holy Spirit that we can be lifted and empowered to face not only the everyday challenges that come our way but also appreciate our many, many blessings. Loredana Saracini Deputy Principal What s on at St Mark s A Big Thank You! I would like to extend a warm thank you to the Parents & Friends and Class Carers for coordinating our Family Fun Night. It was wonderful to see families get together and enjoy each others company. Our students certainly loved the challenge of the many games! It s during these occasions that I am reminded of just how blessed we are here at St Mark s! Courier Cup On Thursday March 2 nd, 13 St Mark s students will be competing in the Courier Cup SAPSASA at Mountain Pool. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Mr Tyson Scott for his tireless effort in ensuring our students are ready for their events. Year 3 Camp On Monday our Year 3 students travelled to Aldinga for this year s first camp experience. They were all very excited. We look forward to their safe return together with the many stories I know they ll be eager to share.
2 Assembly Please join us for Assembly this week on Wednesday March 1 st. This week Year 4K will be presenting. Friday Chapel Please join us for Friday chapel at 9:00am in the school hall. This week s chapel will be led by Pastor Clayton. During our chapel our Year 2 students will be receiving their very own Bibles which have been gifted by the St Mark s Lutheran Church Ladies Fellowship. We would like to take this opportunity to thank the Ladies Fellowship for the ongoing commitment to our Year 2 students. Friday will also be an opportunity to pray and give thanks for our 2017 Class Carers who will be installed by Pastor. Principal s Leave Following a check-up last Friday I felt it timely to update you on my recovery and ongoing leave. As you may have heard I injured my back during a heavier than planned landing while tandem skydiving. It was just an unfortunate outcome after a fantastic tandem skydive experience. As a result I broke a vertebrae in my back. I m very lucky as I have full movement and will make a full recovery. It is frustrating that I am well apart from back pain and short term restrictions to movement no bending, twisting, lifting, carrying etc. and reduced sitting/standing during the healing process. Like any fracture it just needs time to heal and stabilise. Given these restrictions I am unable to return to work for four more weeks. During my absence Ms Loredana Saracini, our Deputy Principal remains your point of contact. Please contact her with any questions or concerns you have. Thank you for the many good wishes I have received as I make a slow but positive recovery. I look forward to seeing you all again in four weeks. James Heyne SPORTS DAY 2017 Don t forget the St Mark s annual Sports Day!!! On Thursday the 23 rd March, students from Years 4-6 will be competing in two events; 600m and Discus. These events will run from recess until the end of day with 600m run first followed by Discus in order of the youngest to eldest age group. On Friday 24 th March, the whole school will be competing in a number of athletic and novelty events in competition for the Sports Day House Shield. For those families who wish to have lunch at the school prior to the event, you can arrive at 12:00pm. The P&F will have lunch provided if you wish to purchase it. Otherwise students are expected to have had lunch and be in their classrooms at 12:40pm for roll call. The presentation of the House Shield is scheduled to be at 5:40pm with a community tea run by the P&F to follow. A final program and map of events will be included in the newsletter in the coming weeks. COURIER CUP Congratulations and good luck to the following students who will represent St Mark s at the Courier Cup swimming carnival on Thursday the 2 nd of March. Ella Newman, Hunter Copson, Callum Uebergang, Amy Hirschausen, Elisha Jones, Ruby Gogel, Chelsea Fry, Charlie Main, Kiara McInnes, Elizabeth Venus, Eliza Scott, Thomas Alexander and Nicholas Doyle Dear parents, We have been advised that due to further works to the church building the parking bays closest to the church building will be cordoned off from March 9th until March 17th. We apologise for the inconvenience this may cause you.
3 Dear Parents/Caregivers, HOLIDAY BOOKINGS ARE OPEN! We have an exciting program planned for our Adventureland themed Holiday Club. We are open every day (excluding public holidays). Open hours are 6:30am-6:15pm. I have attached a copy of the exciting activities we have planned. All bookings can be made at holidayclubfun or you can call our friendly customer service team Please ensure if your child has any medical needs that you visit the website or drop by the service anytime to collect required paperwork. We would like to also give a special THANK YOU to the families that have donated games to the service. Owen Webster and Lara Stanton and their families have donated several games over the term. They have been very popular and the children are extremely grateful for their generosity. Sam Thomas and team sastmarks@oshccampaustralia.com.au Mobile: Lost Property Sofie Dannenberg has lost her school hat. It has her name clearly embroided on it. Please let the Front Office know if you know where it is. Thank you! LEAH Schools Partnerships As we announced last year, we have strengthened our partnership with Cornerstone College in a practical way to assist families who have students enrolled at St Mark s and Cornerstone at the same time. A rebate is available from us for your child attending St Mark s and from Cornerstone for your child enrolled there. An application form is available from our office if you would like to apply for the rebate. It should be completed and returned to us and then we will forward it to Cornerstone College for them to action.
