The Gospels tells us to love thy neighbour. We are all made in the image of God and one of God s greatest gifts to us is each other. Another one of God s greatest gift to us is the world in which we live and everything in it. We are called to love each other but why should it stop at just caring for each other? Imagine if we cared for the environment in the same way as we cared for a loved one? Wouldn t it love us back just as our family and friends do? If we choose not to love and care for someone then naturally the relationship is diminished. I hope and pray that we continue to build our loving relationship with the environment and use World Environment Day as an opportunity to pause and reflect on God s gift to us. STUDENT FREE DAY REMINDER Please remember that this Friday 6 th June is a student free day. Staff will utilise the day to engage in professional learning opportunities. SCHOOL PHOTOS Our school photos are scheduled for Wednesday 25 th June (Week 9). Each student will need to bring their individual envelope with payment to give to the photographer on the day. Please enclose the correct money as no change is given. Cash, cheques and money orders only (sorry no credit card accepted). Family envelopes are available at the front office for anyone wanting family photos. CATHOLIC ATHLETICS CARNIVAL Tomorrow students from the 5/6/7 class will travel to Adelaide to participate in the Catholic Athletics Carnival. Consent and medical forms were sent home last week. The bus leaves from school tomorrow at 6:15am sharp so please ensure that all students are at school prior to that time. I look forward to this event being a successful day as it has been in the past. You can stay in touch with how the students go throughout the day through our Facebook page. SCHOOL GROUNDS Thank you to Terry Jackson and Lachlan Crossley for their continued efforts in keeping our school grounds looking so wonderful. It can t be underestimated how much work goes into our grounds mowing, painting, spraying, trimming, watering, sweeping, and much more. The students also appreciate it. I quite often get compliments about how lovely our school grounds are from people who visit. Thanks! - Damian Smith

2 FROM THE APRIM This Sunday is Pentecost Sunday. Pentecost symbolises the end of the Easter season, last Sunday we celebrated the ascension of Jesus to Heaven and now we reflect on the coming of the Holy Spirit upon the disciples. The Coming of the Holy Spirit Acts 2:1-11 When the day of Pentecost came, all the believers were gathered together in one place. Suddenly there was a noise from the sky, which sounded like a strong wind blowing, and filled the whole house where they were sitting. Then they saw what looked like tongues of fire, which spread out and touched person there. They were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to talk in other languages, as the Spirit enabled them to speak. There were Jews living in Jerusalem, religious people who had come from every country on the world. When they heard this noise, a large crowd gathered. They were all excited, because all of them heard the believers talking in their own languages. In amazement and wonder they exclaimed, These people who are talking are Galileans! How is it, then, that all of us hear them speaking in our own native languages? We are from Parthia, Media and Elam; from Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia; from Pontus and Asia, from Phrygia and Pamphylia, from Egypt and the regions of Libya near Cyrene. Some of us are from Rome, both Jews and Gentiles converted to Judaism, and some of us are from Crete and Arabia yet all of us hear them speaking in our own languages about the great things that God has done! Did you know? Pentecost is often called the birthday of the Church. Up until this time, the disciples had been a small group of Jewish men and women. But from the day of Pentecost onward, when they received the Holy Spirit, the Church was born and they began spreading rapidly to other nations. Pentecost History Fifty days after the Passover, the Jewish people have a festival known as Shavuot (in Hebrew, weeks ) or Pentecost (in Greek, fiftieth ). It was originally a harvest festival. In later Jewish tradition it became a celebration of Moses receiving the Torah (God s teachings) on Mt Sinai. - Bec Fahey

3 SCHOOL NEWS At St Joseph s School each month we focus on one of the 10 important attributes of gr8 people. This month we are focusing on the attribute of being positive. Your attitude is the personal choice that you make about how you are going to react and what action you will take in any situation. Every day things are happening to us and around us. Our reaction to what happens and how we respond is in our control. That is our attitude. Just like choosing what to wear each day, you can choose to wear whatever attitude you want. Most of us believe our attitudes are caused directly by other people and the things that happen to us during the day. While these things may trigger our feelings, we choose how we react to them and the attitude we have. We can either let outside things affect the way we feel or we can take charge of our own response. So what s your current attitude to your life? Are you a person who makes things happen, do you watch things happen or do you simply say "what happened" as life passes you by. A good example is how we respond when someone asks, How are you? Instead of responding, Not bad! or Could be better!, try Fantastic! or Great! You can choose a POSITIVE attitude. It gives you confidence, enthusiasm and energy. The way that we think and talk to ourselves is very important and powerful. Self-talk is that little voice inside your head. If that little voice is saying negative things try to replace them with positive things. We need to watch out for really negative words like hate. Instead of thinking, I hate this!, try changing your self-talk to, I really don t like this but I ll give it my best. We also need to be able to forgive ourselves. We all make mistakes. It is important that we learn from them but don t dwell on them. "A pessimist is one who makes difficulties of his opportunities and an optimist is one who makes opportunities of his difficulties." 4 COIN LINE Thanks to everyone who donated coins to our coin line. Our coin line stretched over 15 metres in length, which is a great effort for our little school. Later this term some of our older students will travel to Pt Pirie and work with students from St Mark s College to lay out all the coins that were collected from throughout our diocese to see if we reach our goal of a 1 km long coin line. SAPSASA NETBALL Last week Alyssa and Mya travelled to Adelaide to participate in the SAPSASA State Netball Carnival. The girls played in separate teams but both performed well. Mya s Team Division 4 Won 4, Lost - 5 Alyssa s Team Division 8 Won 6, Lost 2, Draw - 1 Congratulations to both girls on a fantastic effort in representing our school. It is great to see students from our school perform well at regional and state sporting events. WALK SAFELY TO SCHOOL DAY Well done to all the students who participated in the Walk Safely to School Day in Week 5. It is important that we all understand the importance of living a physically active lifestyle in order to stay healthy and strong.

5 HEALTHY SNACKS As most of you will be aware we allow students the opportunity to eat healthy food snacks and drink water during class. Specifically we encourage healthy food snacks in the morning block before recess. Allowing the students to eat fruit and vegetable snacks and drinking water helps sustain their thinking throughout the day. Furthermore we want to support families in encouraging all of our students to make healthy eating options, therefore, other types of food and drinks aren t allowed during this time. PARENTS & FRIENDS NEWS KIDS CAFÉ Please fill out the below table if you are able to help cook and serve for the Kid s Café and return to the front office. We need two volunteers from approximately 12pm to 2pm each Friday. Thanks for your support. Volunteers and visitors are allowed one off engagement in activities with the students but beyond that a Catholic Schools Police Check is a requirement. This is in the interests of protecting and keeping all children safe.
