Please advise the School Office if you do not approve of your child s photo being used. From the Principal s desk. Welcome to Week 2. What a exciting start to the term last week with our visit to Victoria Park to see Harry and Megan. The weather wasn t the best, but the rain continues to be so welcomed, however the children were simply a credit to the school. Well done SJP. This week we continue to celebrate our Indigenous culture, which is such an important part of the fabric of our inclusive school. Miss Lucas, our Aboriginal Education Worker, has organised a number of events. Last week our students enjoyed dance workshops. Thanks Miss Lucas for your organisation. The 2018 theme is Because of her, we can! This year s theme celebrates the essential role that women have played - and continue to play - as active and significant role models at the community, local, state and national levels. Tomorrow evening the next P&F meeting will be held. The P&F is a dedicated and vital part of our school leadership. The meeting commences at 7pm and all are welcome. It would be wonderful to see you there. This Thursday we will be celebrating our Grandparents with a celebration Liturgy at 10:15 and activities. Grandparents play such a vital role in many of our lives. This day is our way of saying thank you. October is World Mission Month and we begin this term by exploring sacred scripture that tells us the story of Jesus Mission. Missionary activity is, fundamentally, a going out of oneself in love, a reaching out to see God in everyone and to share God s love with each person we meet especially our poor and marginalised. Jesus mission of creating a world where all can live a fully dignified life is still far from completion. One of the central missions of the Church is to help all Christians in their commitment to Christ s mission of love, mercy, forgiveness, peace and justice for the world. Mrs Clifford will have details of how SJP will be supporting World Mission Month. VISION STATEMENT To change the world through our faith in Jesus who is our light and hope.
2 Weekly Gospel and Reflection: Mark 10: The Request of James and John Then James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came to him. Teacher, they said, we want you to do for us whatever we ask. What do you want me to do for you? he asked. They replied, Let one of us sit at your right and the other at your left in your glory. You don t know what you are asking, Jesus said. Can you drink the cup I drink or be baptized with the baptism I am baptized with? We can, they answered. Jesus said to them, You will drink the cup I drink and be baptized with the baptism I am baptized with, but to sit at my right or left is not for me to grant. These places belong to those for whom they have been prepared. When the ten heard about this, they became indignant with James and John. Jesus called them together and said, You know that those who are regarded as rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise authority over them. Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be slave of all. For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many. Reflection: Can you drink the cup that I must drink? This classic passage of James and John requesting Jesus for prime positions in heaven is essentially a story of human nature s often problematic pursuit of its ideals. Jesus says, You don t know what you are asking for and then reminds the other disciples that the point is to serve and not be served. This feels like a familiar story, where we tend to gravitate toward achieving ideals but sometimes at the expense of others or for our own personal benefit. On these occasions, hindsight can cause embarrassment, at the least. Let us take a closer look at what motivates us in our ambitions and make some adjustments. ******************************************************************************************************* A big Congratulations to Miss Hawke on her marriage during the holidays and also Congratulations to Miss Teale on her recent engagement. God Bless and have a wonderful week Anthony O Leary
