1 Newsletter 2018 April 13 - Week 11 Term 1 Easter Assembly Our whole College Easter assembly last week explored some of the ways that different families and cultures within our College community celebrate the death and resurrection of Jesus. It was wonderful to see so many different traditions and to learn about how they reflect on particular aspects of the Easter story. The Primary School choir sang beautifully and Mrs Palmer reminded us all that Jesus made the most difficult choice of all because of His immeasurable love for each one of us. Thank you to all the families that joined us for this special celebration! More photos on page 3. Sonya Melhop - Primary Teacher

I hope that you had an excellent Easter; I know that I did. Personally, one of the highlights for me this year was the many conversations that came out of the Easter assembly from students sharing the traditions that they have in their homes at Easter. I am amazed at just how strong Easter traditions are. It is fantastic to discover and I would encourage all families to think about how they might do things at Easter that not only bring a family together, but remind you of the Easter story; a story that has deep and profound implications for living life today. In simple terms, the Easter story is a story of hope. What Jesus did through His death and resurrection was give us hope. Why? Because, as Pastor Lars Halverson explained recently, without hope life has no meaning. The hope we receive through Jesus resurrection is not just wishful thinking, it is a promise from God, and when God promises something He delivers. There is a certainty, an inevitability about faith based hope. The resurrection began a chain of events that (in His time) will lead to the fulfilment of Gods commitment to us as He reinstates and restores His Kingdom plan. Every year at Easter we get the opportunity to remind ourselves of this promise and the hope that it brings. My prayer is that everyone connected to the College will come to know the real story of Easter and the hope that it offers. A hope found in an act of the past, that points to a future promise, that allows us to live today with meaning and purpose. I know that this term has been long and not without its surprises (Cyclone Marcus included) but I want to finish this term by thanking you all for your support and encouragement. Blessings, Andrew Manning - Principal Tuesday 15th NAPLAN (Language Conventions and Writing) Wednesday 16th NAPLAN (Reading) Thursday 17th NAPLAN (Numeracy) BACK TO SCHOOL VOUCHERS Redeem today! 4 What s Happening Around MCC United Nations Youth Territory Conference Some of our Senior School students recently took part in the 2018 UN Youth Territory Conference. It was a three day conference on the theme Power, Diplomacy and Influence. They got a chance to meet new people and were involved in discussing various issues through workshops, interactive problem solving activities and debates. We have received a lot of positive feedback about our delegates from the organisers. Congratulations to all our delegates, especially to Lucas Badenhop and Leilana Stone who have been selected to attend the National Conference in July. The following delegates took part in the conference: Daniel Watson (Year 12) Kayla Nankervis (Year 11) Isaac Dimmick (Year 12) Toni Assis (Year 10) Lucas Badenhop (Year 11) Zoe van Bentum (Year 10) Joshua van Bentum (Year 11) Kristi Merrit (Year 10) Andrew van Gelderen (Year 11) Leilana Stone (Year 10) The 'Eyes' Have It! If a picture speaks 1000 words then a hands on experience speaks a million!! In Science this term, Year 9 students have been learning about the properties of light, how it behaves and how the parts of our eyes interact with light to enable us to see. We have reflected on how, just through this one small body part alone, we see the creativity and intelligence of our Creator. Students wonder and enjoyment reached a whole new level this week as they dissected a real cow s eye and were able to identify all the parts. We are indeed fearfully and wonderfully made! Mrs Emma Allison - Year 9 Science Teacher

5 What s Happening Around MCC ANZAC Assembly Lost Property School Photos Lost property is located in the blue laundry hamper at the back door of the office. Small items of value are held at the front desk. At the moment, it is overflowing with towels, goggles, water bottles, thongs, school shirts and shorts! Please pop in if you are missing any items at home. The Front Office is open from 9am - 3pm throughout the school holidays. Our school photos are being taken from Tuesday 1st May to Thursday 3rd May. Time to check if you have the correct uniform or if you need a haircut! You should have received a letter and ordering information through your child. Please contact the Front Office for more information.

7 EXPERIENCING GRIEF AND TRAUMA CAN LEAVE YOU OR YOUR CHILDREN EMOTIONALLY VOLATILE AND MENTALLY CONFUSED. IT S PAINFUL IN EXPECTED AND UNEXPECTED WAYS. IT HURTS AND IT MAKES US HIGHLY AWARE OF OUR FRAGILITY. SOMETIMES WE MIGHT SEE A SENSE OF THE GOOD THAT GOD MIGHT BE WEAVING INTO THE WORLD THROUGH THE EVENT, BUT OTHER TIMES IT JUST SEEMS FUTILE AND WE STRUGGLE TO TRUST GOD S PROMISES. Here are some biblical reflections adapted from Grief: Finding Hope Again by Paul David Tripp: 1 Be honest about the way you feel. As a Christian you are not void of emotion. Psalms 13, 22, 42, and 73 have God s people turning to Him in grief and confusion. Cast all your anxieties on him because he cares for you (1 Peter 5:7). 2 Go to where real comfort is found. All real, lasting comfort has its source in the Lord, because He is the Father of compassion and comfort. Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort... (2 Corinthians 1:3). 3 Beware of traps. Watch yourself for signs of doubt, anger, envy, self-pity, and bitterness. When you see these things in yourself, run to Jesus for His forgiveness, strength, and protection. 4 Open yourself up to helpers. God has placed helpers in your life. Look for them, and be patient with them. Since no human comforter is perfect, their comfort will not be perfect either (Ephesians 4:1-16). 5 Be thankful. Even in the darkest of times, you can find clear signs of God s presence and love. Give thanks in all circumstances, for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you (1 Thessalonians 5:18). 6 Don t neglect your spiritual habits. When you are suffering it can seem pointless or difficult to pray, read the Bible, or be in Christian fellowship. But you need these spiritually productive habits in your life now more than ever. 7 Celebrate eternity. Look beyond this moment of grief to an eternity with God. As you grieve, remember what is to come, and be thankful. You have a bright future that does not include sadness and death. 8 Give away the comfort you have received. Scripture says that God comforts us, not only to bring rest to our hearts, but also so we can comfort others (2 Corinthians 1:3, 4). nurture June
