1 Issue Term 1 Week 10 April Dear Parents, Recently Tony, Donovan and myself went to the World EduLead Conference in Sydney. This was an excellent opportunity to hear from international speakers about global education trends. Creativity, Critical Thinking, Risking Taking and teachers who care about kids were common themes throughout all the presentations. Creative thinking is being able to look at problems from a variety of perspectives and come up with unorthodox solutions. It was noted that often these solutions may look unsettling at first. When talking about creative thinking Dr. Douglas Reeves shared that mistakes are ok and you won t always get the solution right the first time. He went on to say A zero risk environment is a zero learning environment I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. P hilippians 4:13 In 2017, Will Richardson was named one of the 100 global Changemakers in Education. He spoke about the new reality for learners. We can learn anything, anytime, anywhere, with anyone. He challenged us to think about what is the value of school? Ian Gilbert, the author of Why do I need a teacher when I have google?, spoke about the importance of teachers who are able to bring the best out of each child. He believes we are in a time when we need good teachers now more than ever. Dr Debbie Silver shared her passion for teaching and kids she strongly believes that what teachers do is so important and that relationships are the key to successful learners. She stated that Education is about the heart and mind and left us with a question to ponder How are you going to make the world a little better? We all left the Conference affirmed and energised by the good things we are already doing at HCCS. We are also excited by the challenges that are ahead. We are so blessed at HCCS with an amazing group of educators who are passionate developing children to be the best they can be. We have used their buses for many excursions over the years. Roger was not only the owner of the company, but he also drove the bus for us and looked after us well. It is with great sadness that we heard of the passing of Roger s wife, Robyn, recently. Please keep Roger and his family in your prayers. HCCS BUS SERVICE UPDATE BUS RUN 1 Lenswood, Lobethal, Mt Torrens, Charleston, Woodside, Oakbank and Balhannah. Families who would like their child to utilise this service please contact Tracy Juers (tjuers@hccs.sa.edu.au) in Administration, so we can include you on our list. For existing families there is no need to contact the School unless you would like to change your current arrangements or cancel the service. BUS RUN 2 Mt Barker, Nairne, Blakiston, Littlehampton and Oakbank. We are currently finalising the route and bus driver to commence this service by Week 3 of Term 2. Many families have expressed an interest in this service. If you would like to put your name down for your children please contact Tracy Juers. Year 10 Easter Baking How did being involved in the Easter Re-enactments affect some of the Year 5 students? It helped me to understand how much Jesus loves and cares about us. It also taught me about the Last supper and how Jesus died on the cross for us. Georgia Being involved in the Re-enactments helped me realise that there is more to Easter than just killing Jesus. It helped me to remember to thank Jesus rather than just ask Him. To be thankful that what I need, I have! Not what I want and don t have. Alexander Because I did the performances, I am not as nervous going up the front of a crowd and talking. I also learnt about the story of Jesus more. Violet The Easter performances have made it more clear to me how Jesus got crucified and how He had the Last Supper. 3 The Easter Worship Service was a wonderful celebration for our School community enjoyed by the children from the Early Learning Centre to Year 12 students, staff and parents! He is Risen! P a g e 3

4 Year 2 Egg Carton Easter Story We made an Easter Story using plastic eggs. Inside the eggs we put a silver coin, 2 nails, a leaf, a picture of a donkey, a rock and a cross. I shared my story with Hayden and Dad. Zali We used 6 eggs and some plasticine to make a cross. Jensen Year 6 Reflective Artwork God showed Grace by dying on the cross for us and sending Jesus to take away our sins. I put a white cross on my picture to show Grace overcoming sin and I used black on the sin side to show the darkness and red to show the evil. I used yellow on the Grace side to show happiness and joy and blue to show kindness and good emotions. Ewan. Year 2 Egg Dying We made Easter eggs using food colouring and a hard boiled egg. It was fun! Our hands got stained by the food colouring. Georgia and Lucinda. I enjoyed making these eggs. It was fun! Hamish It was fun because we got to make any colour we wanted. I dropped mine! Polly My Artwork is about two sides of the world, GRACE and SIN. The red popstick is showing that people sinning affects those around us. This is represented with the red background and grey on the hill and Cross. The dead flowers are showing that SIN effected the Earth s natural resources, like these poor innocent flowers. The reason I chose theses colours is that red and grey signals negative responses to everyone. On the other side we gave GRACE. With the popstick having a positive effect on the Earth and those around it. The sky is blue, the hill is green and the Cross is yellow. The reason is chose these colours was because bright colours like yellow, light blue and light green show that GRACE is in the world and it is what we should be showing. Alex P a g e 4

5 Year 7 Crosses The Year 7 students put a lot of thought, care, time and energy into making their Easter Crosses. They are a reflection of themselves, their life and God s love for them. This is a wonderful tradition at HCCS. Here are a few excerpts from the student s thoughts: My Easter cross is a marble run and I chose this design because it links into my life in many ways. The marbles symbolise us and the journey they take depicts our life. The track represents God and how He guides us through life. The split in tracks shows there are many choices we have to make. The bumps and zigzags symbolises how life isn t always smooth. The places where marbles sometimes get stuck, and need another marble to help them along, shows how sometimes we just need a little help or encouragement from the people in our life. The little jump the marble takes at the end of the run symbolises how we sometimes have to take a leap of faith or take risks. Sam My Easter cross represents different parts of my life because I love song writing, the beach and my family. I believe in God by praying to Him with a cross in my hands and that helps me to see Him when I pray. God helps me when I m at school, at home and when I go places without my Mum and Dad. God helps me through my life when I m sad, happy and when I m cross. That is why God is the biggest part of my life. Shakaya My Easter cross represents me and sustainability. The cross is free to swing because I love swinging and it comes from the tree I swing on. The frame isn t perfect, as no one is. The frame comes from our wood pile. It has ridges that represent the ups and downs in life and nail holes that represent Jesus being nailed to the cross. Eryn I made my Easter cross out of perspex because it is clear and see-through which represents the purity of Jesus and His sacrifice. The rocks at the bottom of the cross represent how beautiful the earth is. The flowers also represent when He helped people, it was a kind thing and a happy time. The thorn crown on top of the cross represents how Jesus died for us. I wrote Faith in the middle of the cross because we have complete trust in God. Charlotte My Easter cross represents many different parts of my life including singing, playing the piano, writing songs, my family, the beach and nature. God reveals Himself to me because when I make a mistake, He forgives me and He is always there for me. I can pray to God whenever I feel like it. God died for us so that we can keep living. NAPLAN Testing Students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 will be sitting NAPLAN tests next term in WEEK 3, (May 15 17). Students complete tests in Language Conventions, Writing, Reading and Numeracy over the week. As NAPLAN is a National Assessment, all students are expected to participate.
