We explored rock pools and played games, including Storm the Lantern at night. We enjoyed our camp fire, toasting marshmallows and chatting and singing together. On Friday, we visited the Outdoor Adventure Centre at Rendelsham, where we explored concepts of I Can, resilience and working out of our comfort zones. Thank you to Deb Hill, Ryan Agnew and Mr Cram for assisting us on camp. We really appreciate your help and time you have given us, ensuring our camp was a success. 2 Dear Parents Staffing I am pleased to announce that Nicole Coote has been appointed as Religious Education Coordinator and replacement teacher for Yr 4/5. Nicole is currently employed at St Anthony s in Millicent and is a very experienced and highly recommended teacher. We look forward to Nic joining our community in Term 2 while Pip is in Parenting Leave. National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence Last Friday we joined with students from Penola Primary School and Penola High School to acknowledge the importance of anti-bullying practices. We are grateful to Shane and Kerry at IGA for organising the event and also for their generosity with apples and icy poles. Cara has written an article about bullying for this Newsletter. Mary MacKillop Leos A big thank you to John Stayte, Jenny Hinze and Ray Haines for getting this group underway. The Leos have had their first official meeting and worked on the project of reviving the Butterfly Garden. At the meeting the Leos received their badges and the Charter was presented to the President of MM Leos, Henry. Cooper is Treasurer and Mason is Secretary. Professional Development Our visit to St Joseph's in Clare was a very worthwhile experience. It was great to talk with colleagues and look at different ways of presenting the curriculum, collecting and analysing data and reporting to parents. Over the coming weeks staff will review some of our practices and make changes which will benefit students and increase learning outcomes. One thing we will be implementing shortly across the school is Quick Number. Quick Number will take 60 seconds five nights a week as part of Homework, it will be introduced in a staggered way beginning with Year 2/3. All parents will receive further information about this program before the end of the term. Master Plan At last night s Board Meeting the submission from Edge Architects to create our School Master Plan was accepted. This is a very exciting process to undertake and you will be involved in this process in the coming months as together we review our facilities and plan for the future. 3 Way Learning Conversations Next Week Thank you for your prompt response to the invitations for next week s meetings. By now you should have all received the confirmed times for your meetings. Teachers are looking forward to discussing Learning Plans with each of you. Siblings will be cared for in the Library. Tenison Woods College Music We really enjoyed the visit from some of Tenison Wood College's music students following their music camp. There were lots of smiles, bopping to the music and covering of the ears as it was so loud. The Drum Corp was a particular favourite. Ask your children what was happening in this picture. Tuesday May 1st Andrew Chinn Visit Please keep Tuesday May 1st free from 12:45 to 1:45 to come to the Andrew Chinn concert in the Hall. We will be joined by the staff and students from Sacred Heart school, Casterton and St Malachy s, Edenhope for the day. Families from Yr 2/3 and 6/7 are asked to send a plate of food for a shared recess onthat day. Blessings Maureen

3 On Monday we celebrated the Feast of Saint Joseph, an ordinary and humble man who was the husband of Mary and foster-father of Jesus here on earth. Joseph protected and cared for Mary and Jesus, placing their needs before his own. He was a carpenter and craftsman and spent many hours creating things from wood. Joseph was a man of deep faith, turning constantly to God for guidance and strength. He is an example to us of how an ordinary person can have an extraordinary love for others. Through Joseph s example we can learn to trust in God s way. Mary MacKillop chose St Joseph to be the patron of her new order - the Sisters of St Joseph which began here in Penola over 150 years ago. In naming the Congregation in his honour Mary MacKillop placed all the works of the sisters under St. Joseph s care. Our school was named St. Joseph s School for fifty years before it became Mary MacKillop Memorial School. Holy Week Holy Week which is next week marks the final week of Lent. On Thursday evening we begin the celebration of the most solemn holy days of the year. Holy Week is a time we walk with Jesus along his journey of death. Palm Sunday On Sunday, March 25, palms will be blessed and we will hear the reading of the passion of Jesus. That is why it is called both Passion Sunday and Palm Sunday. Carrying branches on the Sunday before Easter unites us with all people who ever welcomed Jesus as the Messiah. Holy Thursday At his last Passover meal with his disciples, Jesus gave to them and to us, the bread and wine that are his body and blood. We remember and celebrate that mystery. This night marks the end of Lent and the beginning of the Paschal Triduum. Triduum means three days. These three days are the holiest of the Christian year. Good Friday We remember Jesus passion and death. Arriving at the place of execution Jesus was placed on the cross and his hands and feet were nailed to it. From the cross Jesus uttered his last words which were words of love and forgiveness towards those who had treated him so badly. Holy Week/ Easter Mass Times Holy Thursday - March 29th 7.30pm Stations of the Cross - March 30th 10am Good Friday - March 30th 3pm Easter Vigil - March 31st 7.30pm Easter Sunday - April 1st 9am Holy Saturday has no major liturgy. It is the day in the Tomb used for reflection and retreat. The anointing of catechumens with the oil of baptism is often done on Holy Saturday in anticipation of the baptism rite at the Easter Vigil to come Easter Sunday We joyously celebrate Jesus resurrection to new life. 4 Hello everyone, Last Friday students from Penola came together to say, no way to bullying but we need to make this more than a sign in a car park. It is wonderful to see so many people joining together against bullying. Seeing this made me realise that there are so many people who want to do the right thing and I see them every time I walk into Mary MacKillop School. So let s work together and support each other against the minority. A simple thing that we can all do is if you see someone who is saying nasty things to someone or their actions are hurtful tell them that that is NOT OK at our school. Parents can encourage children to embrace diversity. Instead of putting others down, we can lift each other up. A positive school climate is critical for preventing bullying in the first place. Secondly, I have heard students using the term bullying inappropriately and this causes problems. Look at the image and make sure that if your child is using the term that they are using it correctly. If bullying is happening please make sure the school is aware of this. Regards, Cara HARMONY DAY At Mary MacKillop Memorial School, we recognised Harmony Day. Wearing orange, we joined hands displaying our commitment to cultural inclusivity. Each class completed activities, developing our understanding of cultural inclusion and harmony. We coordinated the distribution of orange ribbons for each student and staff member. 5 Rugby Jumpers Some of the new Rugby jumpers have gone missing, can you please check at home that you have the correct ones. Hats The new bucket hats have arrived if you are needing a new hat. The old style can be worn until a new one is required. Thank You Thank you to the Community Club for the new cutting boards and cooking utensils that were made available to the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Project Class from the Tupperware orders from families. Tenison Woods College 2018 Twilight Tour Tenison Woods College is holding its Twilight Tour on Wednesday, March 28th at 6pm. The tour will begin from the Pam Ronan Centre, with entry and parking off White Avenue. No bookings required, if you want further information please contact Tracey Davey, Tenison Woods College Registrar on New Season of Senior Basketball The next season for senior basketball is approaching quickly and we are looking for new teams and players! We have competitions for both men and women for all abilities! We have women s social basketball that is played on Monday or Wednesday nights from 6:30pm onwards and is a great way to socialise, have fun and stay active all at the same time. There is a Senior Women s competition also held on a Monday night with plenty of positions available. Our Senior Men s competition is played on Monday nights and the social men s competition is played on Wednesday nights. Anyone is welcome. The option is yours, you can either make your own team, find a friend and join a team together or, just nominate yourself and we will find a team for you!
