1 St Mary s School Warwick Newsletter 19 February 2015 Term 1 Week 4 The following reflection is the Gospel reading from the Prep to 2 and Kindy liturgy on Ash Wednesday. Matthew 6: 1-6, Be careful not to do good things for others just to be noticed so that others praise you. When you give something to others in need, don t boast about it to gain attention. Instead, be quiet about it. You know what you have done and God knows what you have done. And when you pray, don t pretend or be loud so that others think you are holy. Instead pray quietly in your heart. Talk to God and listen to God. You know what you have done and God knows what you have done. When you fast or go without things, don t moan or look sad, so that others feel sorry for you. Instead, be happy. Give up things without complaining. You know what you have done and God knows what you have done. The Gospel of the Lord. Dear Parents and Caregivers, On Wednesday of this week, the school and parish community celebrated Ash Wednesday. At 9.30am Year 5 students led students from Years 3 to 6 and the parish community in a Eucharist celebration and at Midday, Mrs Standing led the Prep to Year 2 and Kindy students in a liturgy in the church. We were blessed again with members of our school and parish community sharing this special liturgy with us. Fr Franco shared with us the three things we could focus on during the season of Lent as we prepare for Easter: Prayer Almsgiving Fasting Prayer is a wonderful way of reflecting on our need to change. Lent is the season where we challenge ourselves to be better in all the things we do but more importantly on being the eyes, ears and heart of Jesus active in the world today. Our daily prayers are an opportunity for us to reflect and ask the love of God to be with us as we try to be just as Jesus would want us to be. Almsgiving reminds us that there are a lot of people in our world less fortunate than ourselves and we should be trying to do as much as we can so their lives can be just that little better. Our response to the missions and Project Compassion is a great way to do this. Fasting or giving up something that we know may be difficult is a way of reminding us of the sacrifice Jesus made for us. The little things we might give up chocolate, soft drink, lollies remind us that our Lenten journey is preparing us for our celebration of Easter God through Jesus loves us and wants us to share that love in all that we do, for ourselves and for others. Jesus continually showed his love and compassion to those in need. Our Lenten challenge is to do the same. Have a wonderful week. 2 School News School Leaders Last Friday, our school leaders led us in our first Eucharist celebration for the 2015 school year. All Year Six students will be asked throughout the year to be excellent role models for all students in our school. They will all be asked to accept the responsibility of being the best they possibly can be and being the guiding light for living the values that all members of our school community hold true. Administration Caritas Australia Project Compassion Each year, our school supports Caritas Australia s Project Compassion which helps pursue justice and help those suffering from poverty and disadvantage in more than 35 countries around the world. Each week during Lent, the children will focus on the story of a child in a particular country which will be supported this year. This week is Fiji: Married couple Eric and Ma had an unprofitable farm and limited diet before they engaged in training at the Tutu Rural Training Centre, supported by Caritas Australia. Now they have a successful farm, a sustainable income and food for life. PARENT/TEACHER INTERVIEWS to be held next week Your interview time will be sent home this week. School Photos for 2015 School photos for 2015 will be taken on Friday 13 March. Children are to wear the correct sports uniform, including correct shoes and correct socks. Individual photo envelopes have been sent home today. Family photo envelopes are available at the School Office. This year, Advanced Life Photography is offering on- line ordering. If you order on-line there is no need to return the envelope. However, if paying by cheque or cash envelopes must be returned to School by Tuesday 10 March at the latest. Please ensure that each student returns his/her own envelope even if payment is made in the eldest child's envelope. Envelopes are not to be placed inside other envelopes. All photos must be pre-paid.

3 School Fees 2015 Parents have been mailed their school fee account for Term Due date for fees is Friday 6 March Family Information A green Family Information update sheet has been included with the school fees. Please return forms urgently, regardless of any changes. Southern Downs Trials As information is received about Southern Trials, a notice will be posted on the notice board at the Upper Campus. These trials are available for Students born in 2003 or Nomination closing dates, cost, skills required, venue, date and times will be displayed. Students who wish to be considered for nomination at the trials are required to inform Mrs Standing before the nomination closing date. Information is currently displayed for Softball and Tennis trials. You Can Do It! Program The foundations of the You Can Do It Program are: Organisation, Getting Along, Confidence, Persistence, Resilience. Central to the development of these five foundations is instilling in young people twelve habits of the mind: Accepting Myself; Taking Risks; Being Independent; I Can Do It; Giving Effort; Working Tough; Setting Goals; Planning My Time; Being Tolerant of Others; Thinking First; Playing by the Rules, Social Responsibility School support for the Parish Celtfest Tombola (Bottle) Stall Please start filling bottles or tall plastic cups to be donated for the stall. Some suggestions for fillings include items of stationery, lollies (must be sealed), small toys, marbles anything appealing to children. Junior Choir Junior Choir is being held on Thursdays at lunch time am in the Prep classroom (Prep L). Year 1 to Year 3 are invited to come along and participate. Junior Choir is not auditioned. There are no sign ons or try outs. The aim of Junior Choir is to provide an opportunity for any child who would like to sing for enjoyment. Children are expected to commit to the school musical which will be held later this year. We have already started two songs from the musical Peter Pan! There will be other opportunities for the Junior Choir to perform later in the year. P&F NEWS 2015 Thank you to all the families who came along and enjoyed a great night at the P&F Welcome BBQ last Friday night. It was a terrific success and so lovely to see teachers, parents and children relaxing and enjoying a great social night together as a school community. The Scooby Doo Jumping Castle was a big hit with the children! A special thanks to all the helpers on the night including Ali & Matt Collins, Chris Newley, Justin & Marg Walsh, Richard & Katie Wheeldon, Kylie Brodrick, Sharon Young, Denise VanKerkwyk, Andrew O Dea, Paul Carey and Dave Carr. Without your help, the night would not have run so smoothly.

4 Thank you to those parents who have already nominated as Year Level Representatives. This year the P&F are looking for parents to volunteer as Year Level Representatives. We are hoping for 2-4 volunteers per year level. The main role of each Year Level Representative is to provide a link between the classrooms and the P&F Association. Ideally, we would love as many Year Level Representatives as possible to attend our monthly P&F meetings (held on the third Thursday of each month at 7pm). We are still seeking more nominations, so if you are interested, please complete the nomination slip in this newsletter and return to the office. A reminder that our first P&F Meeting for the year is THIS THURSDAY 19 FEBRUARY, 7 pm at Upper Campus Library. Come along and take an active part in the school through the P&F Association and hear about all the exciting plans for St. Mary s school in We look forward to seeing you there! 5 NOTICES Flower Girls/Page Boys for Annual Catholic Debutante Ball Traditionally, Catholic students in Year 3 are invited to be Flower Girls/Page Boys for the Annual Catholic Debutante Ball. This year the Ball will be held on Friday 13 th June 2015 at St Mary s Hall. If your daughter and/or son is interested in being a Flower Girl/Page Boy, please contact the Parish Office on or stmaryswck1@bigpond.com by 20th March, Should more than the required number express interest in this matter, names will be drawn from a hat to determine who will fill these roles.
