3 WHY AN ISLAMIC SCHOOL? The idea behind Muslim education is simple: our children look for an identity with those around them so they should be schooled together with other Muslim children in an environment that is friendly to Islam. A child's development flourishes when there is agreement between what is learnt and absorbed at home and what is experienced in the world outside. This goal should be the first and foremost priority of every Muslim parent. Parents need to consider what is a priority for them, being able to provide for the child s worldly needs over and above the necessity or to provide them their basic Islamic upbringing and education. The question does not defy logic, but unfortunately many of us still make the wrong choice. Alhamdulillah, there is a small thread of hope. A dedicated group of parents and community supporters are beginning to see the fruits of an Islamic education. Their children may grow up to be doctors or engineers, but most importantly, they want them to be devout, practicing Muslims. Eventually, we have to decide what is really important to us. Of course, as history has shown us, the children who remain practising Muslim are those who had a very strong Muslim upbringing. So while Muslim schools are not perfect, it's the only way that many children will be saved from Hell-fire. It would be nice to see Muslims get serious about their schools and the future of the Ummah. In some places they are. What about you? OUR GOALS - Provide education in Religious Studies and National Curriculum to the highest possible standards in an Islamic Environment suitable for any child. - Offer a relaxed and friendly learning environment. - Uphold the 'moral and manners' of the Prophet Peace Be Upon Him by providing teaching through self respect, respect for parents, elders and others, through the development of personal responsibility. - Demonstrate citizenship through the teachings of the Quran and Sunnah. - Impart knowledge to the pupils for the pleasure of Allah Ta`alah. - Have an active involvement from parents in the school. - Ensure that the Islamic nature of the School takes precedence over all other considerations. - Equip the young with the knowledge to dispell stereotypes. We strive to raise our children to be: 1. Committed balanced Muslims 2. Knowledgeable Scholars 3. Contributing citizens and community builders Page 3 of 8

4 Committed balanced Muslims Correct understanding of Islam: Students show solid understanding of their faith (Aqeedah) and are able to quote and locate authentic information about Islam. They should also demonstrate an understanding of Islam as a comprehensive religion that encompasses all ways of life. Students will also understand different sciences of Islam such as Quran, Sunnah, Sirah, etc. Practice of Islam: Students will be practising their prayers according to the Sunnah method and implementing authentic supplications (duaa) on a daily basis. They will also be made to memorise the Quran whilst applying full tajweed. Character and Ethics: Students are aware that character and manners are one of the top priorities of their educational program. They take responsibility for personal actions and act ethically (eg. demonstrate honesty, fairness, integrity). Knowledgeable Scholars Learning to learn skills: Students make a commitment to creating quality work and striving for excellence by using a variety of learning strategies, personal skills, and time management skills to enhance learning. Communication skills: Students integrate the use of a variety of communication forms and use a wide range of communication skills. Interpersonal Skills: Students work with others in a variety of situations to set and achieve goals. They are able to manage and evaluate their behaviour as group members. Essential knowledge and skills: Students pass school and state tests successfully. They finish their homework assignments and projects regularly. Contributing citizens and community builders Philosophy: Students will build a philosophy of helping others based on Quran and Teachings of Prophet Mohammed, peace be upon him. They are able to understand the responsibility for global and environmental issues. Community projects: Students act as responsible citizens in the community by showing full respect to law. They are also trained to carry out different community volunteer services. Social skills: Students demonstrate good social skills such as rules of shaking hands, smiling at others, engaging in conversation, etc. They show full respect to themselves and adults when they are present in public places and also create projects in cooperation with non- Muslims to help others. CURRICULUM The Green Crescent Primary School is dedicated to the success of all students and is committed to soar for high academic excellence. Engaging students in learning opportunities and instruction that will allow them to meet or exceed high standards. It will provide Muslim children with the following advantages and benefits: strong Islamic values, small classes, high academic standards, a comprehensive curriculum, committed teachers, and most important an Islamic environment where they can learn and grow as Muslims. 7 Child protection policy The child protection policy which ensures the safety and welfare of our pupils is implemented at all times during school hours. A copy of this policy can be viewed at the head teacher s office. Managing inappropriate behaviour The school has a structured and well-defined disciplinary procedure for incidences in which pupils breach school rules/guidelines. Pupils displaying inappropriate behaviour are initially given either a verbal explanation or warning by their teacher. Following three warnings a pupil is referred to the head teacher who then normally contacts their parents at this stage who are invited in to discuss their child s conduct. In instances where pupils continue to or seriously breach either the school rules or Islamic ethos, this procedure may be overridden on the discretion of the Head teacher and a pupil may be suspended or on rare occasion, even expelled keeping within the guidelines of the Dfes. For further details of the school s behaviour and discipline policy, please contact the head teacher s office. Complaints procedure The school currently has 0 complaints logged from parents Complaints procedure leaflets are available on request. Parents are requested not to enter the office to make a complaint or express their views without arranging an appointment beforehand. Out of school hours, members of staff will not discuss anything associated with the school, and so all appointments should be made to discuss any matters relating to the school during school time. All visitors entering the school should come directly to the office. Going beyond the office into the classroom or passages etc. is strictly prohibited. The arrangements for making and dealing with formal complaints about the school curriculum are clearly defined, however it is advisable to pursue concerns informally prior to submitting a formal complaint, as detailed below. The school undertakes to respond to any initial concern within five working days. Concerns about a pupil s progress, any pastoral matters or about an individual subject should be raised in the first instance with the class teacher. If you feel that you wish to make a formal complaint to the Head teacher, you should contact the school to make an appointment and provide a written statement of your complaint outlining the details involved. The Head teacher will investigate your complaint and ask relevant staff members for their comments. You may be asked to attend the school for a meeting and the school will reply to your complaint within ten working days. If this is not possible, we will write to you to explain the delay and give you a target date for a response. Formal complaints regarding the curriculum, a pupil s special educational needs, religious education, exclusions and admissions should be made to the Head teacher. All such complaints should be made in writing and addressed to the school. Progress Reporting We will provide parents with annual reports for their children, and where the child has sat a public examination, details of this will also be included in their annual report. These reports will normally be provided at the end of the year following the annual exams. Page 7 of 8
