Michael How to Select a Bible (Part 5) This is the fifth in a series of bulletin columns intended to help readers understand the differences between Bibles in order to make an informed decision about which one to choose/read/purchase. If you d like to review any of the previous columns, please visit our website, click on News and Events, and then the link for Fr. Michael s Weekly Column. This week I will continue looking at some of the most widely used English Bible translations, considering the history and characteristics of each one. The last column in this series looked at Bible translations prepared primarily by Protestant scholars (some of which are excellent); this time we consider those prepared primarily by Catholic scholars. Douay-Rheims. Released early in the 17th century, this was the first widely available Catholic English translation of Scripture. It is named for the colleges in France where the translation was prepared (Catholics were forbidden to undertake such a project in England at the time). Some Catholics continue to use it today, but it must be noted that the scholarship reflected here is outdated, and that the English text is actually a translation from Latin, not from the original Hebrew and Greek. In addition, the English language used here is difficult to read. Important historically, it has little practical use today. Jerusalem Bible. Originally a translation prepared by French scholars living in Jerusalem, this Bible was later translated from French into English and published in It is perhaps most noted for its use of Yahweh for the name of God. Because the English translation is twice removed from the original languages, the original Jerusalem Bible is not as accurate as might be desired. However, in 1985, the New Jerusalem Bible was published, reflecting the best characteristics of the original (including excellent footnotes, explanatory materials, and study guides), but now translated directly from the ancient languages into English. New American Bible. This is the translation used by most American Catholics today. It is the version used in our lectionary for the Catholic Church in the United States the version we hear read at our liturgies. Originally released in 1970, it has since been updated to make use of better manuscripts and to incorporate advances in scholarship, and it is now available as the New American Bible Revised Edition. So much more could be said about these translations and others. (In these two columns I haven t listed even all the translations that I own!) Hopefully, though, this will allow you to see what is behind some of the most popular Bible translations found in stores today. All of these have a place and a purpose. Nearly all of them are considered theologically sound. As a general rule, the newer and more literal a translation, the better it will be for study. Others may be better for liturgical proclamation or for private devotional use. Coming next, we ll consider some of the most popular editions of the Bible (particular volumes from particular publishers) and offer some recommendations. Stay tuned!
