But after he baptized the people, Peter and John still had to follow after him to lay hands on the new believers so they could receive the Holy Spirit. It appears from the story that Philip needed help. It looks like he did not do a very good job on his own. But give credit where it is due. Samaria was hardly the place the apostles expected the gospel to take root. They must have been surprised that Philip got anywhere at all with the people who had been enemies of Jerusalem for so long. Remember how Jesus surprised people with the parable of the Good Samaritan, and that the only grateful leper among the ten he cured was Samaritan too. Nobody expected Samaritans to be heroes. But Philip the deacon made headway in enemy territory. He preached, expelled demons, and cured the paralyzed. Not a bad record. When Peter and John arrived, the Holy Spirit came with them. Look carefully at the people you think are not doing a very good job, or people about whom you have low expectations. They may be instruments of Christ, preparing the ground for the Spirit of life. Family Perspective By Bud Ozar In today s gospel Jesus prepared his disciples for his departure. Family life is a series of departures. As we mature and grow older we constantly transition from the familiar to the new unknown. Today Jesus assures us we are not alone in these transitions. I will not leave you orphans. I will come to you. STEWARDSHIP REFLECTIONS For it is better to suffer for doing good, if that be God s will, than for doing evil. 1 PETER 3:17 The old line says if you want to make God laugh, tell him your plans. Many of us are diligent in our planning, making sure things are progressing smoothly, then disaster strikes, we don t get the result that was intended. An unforeseen problem arises. Many times we may respond negatively. Why me? I did everything right! Here s the thing God has a different and better plan in store for you. Prayer of the Faithful That we recognize that things don t always go the way we plan and God has a better plan in store for us.

Please tack it up on the Faith Formation bulletin board in the gathering area of the church. It can be from anywhere in Michigan, a different state, or from another country. When you leave the bulletin, be sure to put your family name on it. 5 Sixth Sunday of Easter Page 5 May 21, 2017 Catholic Service Appeal Thank you for your gifts to CSA Your generous support will fund essential diocesan ministries that support our seminarians, provide training for teachers and faith formation staff, as well as assist our brothers and sisters in need. As of May 15, 492 parishioner families (45%) had pledged $142,300 (112%) toward our CSA goal of $127,250. Thank you for your stewardship! Our goal is 100% participation, which means a completed pledge card from every household. Please keep in mind that any amount raised over our goal is returned to the parish. Please continue to pray for the success of this important effort. St. Patrick Students Participate in Too Good for Drugs Program One of the ways we work to keep our students safe is to focus on their long-term health and well-being. One of the threats for young people everywhere is the use of tobacco, alcohol and other drugs. Research indicates when substance abuse prevention programs are properly implemented in schools and communities; use of tobacco, alcohol and other drugs is reduced. For many years, St. Patrick students have participated in the D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) substance abuse program. Unfortunately, this program was not available this year. We were fortunate however, to find and implement a new program at St. Patrick School for our 5 th grade students. Too Good for Drugs builds the framework for drug-fee living through a fun and interactive journey of setting reachable goals, making responsible decisions, and refusing negative peer pressure. The lessons review the negative effects of alcohol and tobacco on the body, as well as the goal-compromising effects of marijuana and other drugs. Too Good for Drugs is an evidence-based curriculum by the Mendez Foundation. Mrs. Debbie Thalison, Ionia county substance abuse prevention director and Ionia county community health supervisor, worked with our students on the program. Each week, she led them through the program with role playing, interactive games, discussions and sharing. This week marks the 10th and final week of the program. Students will receive t-shirts, wristbands and a certificate of completion when they are done. Each participating school receives a plaque which is updated every year the program is completed. We are blessed that the funding for this program has come from the Ionia County Substance Abuse Initiative (ICSAI), the Ionia County Health Department and Mid-State Health Network. The ICSAI is the county initiative for substance abuse prevention which has both an advisory board and a workgroup. The workgroup consists of community members, local public agencies, schools, and local treatment providers. The Advisory Board is a 7-member volunteer board that is appointed by the Ionia County Board of Commissioners representing each of the (7) commissioners districts. ICSAI meets monthly to focus on substance abuse prevention services in our community through data collection and analysis, information dissemination, community engagement and mobilization. Among the many programs offered through the ICSAI is the Too Good for Drugs program. The St. Patrick School community would like to congratulate our 5 th grade students on their completion of the program. We hope they continue to keep these lessons, skills and tools with them throughout the rest of their lives. We would also like to thank Mrs. Debbie Thalison for working with our students each week and the Ionia County Substance Abuse Initiative board, the Ionia County Health Department and Mid-State Health Network for providing the funding for this program. Line up begins at 10:30 in front of Union Bank, with the parade beginning at noon after the flag raising. On SATURDAY, June 10th St. Joseph's Church in Pewamo will be hosting a volleyball tournament during their annual Parish Festival. It is a 4 on 4 co-ed grass tournament with a competitive and a recreational division. The cost is $80 per team with the first game starting at 9:00am (Immediately after 5K). The entry deadline is Thursday, June 8th.
