3 ST. PATRICK CHURCH Page 3 PORTLAND, MICHIGAN God's Fire Malachi 3:19-20a Fire burns, purifies, cooks, and cleanses. It can work wondrous good. It can cause unspeakable ill. Fire is powerful, as God is powerful. The prophet Malachi envisions the coming of destructive fire. The prevalence of evil is widespread. It was then and is now. Its potential for wreaking havoc is extensive. Malachi believes, as we believe, that God is more powerful than evil, that God is good, and that God will not tolerate the evil of the world. We believe that in time God will set things right. Evil will be punished. We long for that day. Malachi sees that day as a day of fire. The day is coming, blazing like an oven, when all the proud and all evildoers will be stubble. The fire will rage over those who do wrong. They will not endure. God s wrath will be stronger than their desire to do ill. God will have power over them, even when our human frailty does not. There will also be fire for the good. Fire has other properties. It does not only destroy. It brings warmth. For you who fear my name, God says through Malachi, there will arise the sun of justice with its healing rays. The fiery sun will rise in the east and shine with healing upon those who do good. STEWARDSHIP REFLECTIONS GRather, we wanted to present ourselves as a model for you, so that you might imitate us. 2 THESSALONIANS 3:9 Most people who live a grateful and generous lifestyle don t go around bragging about it. But through their actions and words, others do take notice. They notice because of the joy and peace that results and other people desire this in their own life. Know that the way you live your life may be the only interaction others have with the Catholic faith. Prayer of the Faithful That the joy and peace we have in our lives may encourage others to grow in their faith. Miscellaneous Quotes by Pope Francis Please, I would like to ask all those who have positions of responsibility in economic, political and social life, and all men and women of goodwill: let us be "protectors" of creation, protectors of God s plan inscribed in nature, protectors of one another and of the environment. March 19, 2013 God comes like fire. God does not change. But those who do ill are like stubble. Those who do good shall be healed. Written by Paul Turner. Family Perspective By Bud Ozar So many conflicting voices and influences make parenting difficult. In today s gospel Jesus encourages parents to bravely give testimony and trust He will give us the wisdom to be good parents. You are not alone in parenting; a loving Father is standing with you. God knows that we are more than a machine. He invites us to seek him, the Divine Physician, for both physical and spiritual healing. He is just waiting to heal us! 6 Thirty-Third Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 6 November 13, 2016 Safety Lessons By Randy Hodge All you have to do any day of the week is turn on the TV and instantly you are bombarded with stories about violence, addiction, and tragedy. The question most parents ask is, how do I keep my child safe with all that s going on in the world? At St. Patrick Catholic School, we try to help parents with that question by teaching our middle and high schoolers about contemporary issues and societal dangers they may face once outside of school. Every parent wants the best for their child which includes keeping them safe and secure in a difficult, challenging, and unsafe world. And, like any school, we want to ensure our students are educated, informed and able to keep themselves safe regardless of where they might be or whom they choose to associate with. Keeping this in mind, on Friday, November 4, we had a number of knowledgeable professionals present information to our secondary students on a number of challenging topics they potentially face every day. Our topics and presenters included: Mr. Tutt Gorman, Portland city manager, presented on a topic that our teens will only continue to deal with as they get older, cyber security. During his presentation, he cautioned students about the great responsibility they have with access to social media and encouraged them to not abuse the privilege. He also gave them practical advice for their future, explaining that one day colleges and future employers will look at students profiles and what they say and post could have a lasting impact. Mrs. Debra Thalison, Ionia County substance abuse director, presented statistics and information on substance abuse. To get her point across, she invited students to play a game of jeopardy to test their knowledge. Categories included the definition of substance abuse, the effects of various kinds of drug use, how to get help and how to help others seek treatment. Sr. Colleen Ann Nagle, director of the Franciscan Life Process Center, presented on human trafficking. A topic that is not well-known and yet right in our backyard, telling students that the Grand Rapids area is the number one area for human trafficking incidences in the State of Michigan. She explained what human trafficking is and how students can find themselves in situations they do not want to be involved in. She gave them tips on how to avoid becoming victims. Mr. Chad Reagh, supervisor of home-based therapy for The Right Door (formerly Ionia County Community Mental Health), presented on the AAA for teenagers emotional and mental health. The three A s stand for acknowledge, accept, and adapt. He presented a game plan for students to deal with the challenges they will face in life and how to deal with their emotions when those situations arise. I would like to thank our speakers for coming in and sharing their expertise with our students. Our guest speakers did a great job presenting these challenging topics to our students in a way that was relatable and practical, giving them tools in dealing and coping with these present-day issues. The information provided is more than any text book could teach. Give Thanks! Donate Blood! The St Patrick Catholic High School chapter of the National Honor Society is hosting an American Red Cross blood drive on November 15th from 10:00 AM to 4:15 PM in the St Patrick Parish Hall. To Schedule an appointment to donate, please see an NHS member to day or visit Walk-Ins accepted. Appointments Honored. St. Patrick Healing Prayer Ministry Please join fellow parishioners to pray in the presence of Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament for the spiritual, physical, and emotional healing of all who are in need of such. We encourage anyone in need of any kind of healing to come and be in the healing presence of the Blessed Sacrament, while we pray. If unable to attend, however, we welcome anyone to call with any specific or general healing needs so that we may pray in their behalf. We very much encourage those with healing needs to seek the Sacrament of The Anointing of the Sick as well as prayer before the Eucharist. We also encourage anyone who receives healing of any kind to let it be known in some way so that we can offer praise and thanksgiving to Jesus, the Divine healer, and to help build the faith of our parish family. If you have a devotion to the healing of others, please join us. We meet at 7:00 p.m. in the chapel on the 2nd Thursday of each month.
