All your life you had your heart fixed on one desire, but it has eluded your grasp. Perhaps you feel anger and take it out on people you love. Perhaps you have accepted this unrealized dream as a part of the life God calls you to live. The woman who offers hospitality to Elisha had such a dream. She wanted a child. But her husband was aging, and it appeared that her one desire would never come. The story, in the Second Book of Kings, indicates that she was a woman of influence. She may have had wealth and respect in her community, but she was unable to have the blessing she most wanted. All we know of her is her reputation for hospitality. She was remembered not for her misery, not for her disappointment, but for opening her home to a traveling prophet. In the story s happy ending, she receives the desire of her heart. But throughout, she is a model for those who hope for something good. She never gave up trusting in God. She practiced the one virtue she would need if her dream would ever be fulfilled: hospitality. Family Perspective By Bud Ozar Today s gospel challenges us to resist the individualism of our culture. Everything we are and have is pure gift which we are expected to share especially to the lowly ones. What has been freely given needs to be shared freely. No strings attached. STEWARDSHIP REFLECTIONS whoever does not take up his cross and follow after me is not worthy of me. - Mathew 10:38 Pope Benedict XVI said The world offers you comfort. But you were not made for comfort, you were made for greatness. Comfort puts me first. Picking up your cross and following Jesus puts God and others first. Why settle for comfort when you can achieve greatness! Pick up your cross, ask Jesus for guidance on using your gifts and live the life God intended for you! Prayer of the Faithful That we pick up our cross and live the life God intended for each of us!

Larry King In Memoriam Divine Word Missionaries Fr. Tan Viet Nguyen SVD of the Divine Word Missionaries is here to celebrate Mass this weekend and speak about the Divine Word Missionaries. They are an international Religious Community of missionary Priests and Brothers who serve in 70 countries helping provide the most basic of life s necessities like drinkable water, food and shelter. They help build chapels, celebrate the sacraments and spread the Word in the most remote mission communities. Over 6,000 active missionaries travel to the far corners of the world where they build hospitals to care for the sick, educate the poor, teach the hungry to farm and house the homeless; they also work to help those neglected and forgotten building a better future while growing vibrant Catholic communities of service and faith around the world. Welcome Fr. Tan and please be generous in the collection to support their missionary work. The Divine Word Missionaries serve in some of the most difficult mission areas around our world. Online giving St. Patrick Church is trying to keep up as technology continues to change. Another way is through text messaging: From a cell phone text a donation to You will enter answer a few questions and then your donation will be processed. We d love to have an overflow of families to show our patriotism and support for St. Patrick School. If you have any questions contact Mrs. Russman at stacyrussman@portlandstpats.com. God Bless, St. Patrick School Impact the Next Generation Do you ever feel like you hardly recognize our world anymore? It s important to remember that no matter how times and trends change, we can take hope in knowing spiritual truths and values won t they just need to be shared. Here are two questions to ask yourself: What values do I want to pass along? What makes your heart beat? Are there any important experiences or life lessons you ve never shared with those you love? You can help build a framework for what really matters simply by sharing the passions and beliefs you hold most dear. How can I best share my values? Communicating your values doesn t have to feel intimidating. Many Catholics are choosing to create or update their Will so it aligns with their values taking care of loved ones first and then including a gift to support a charity they care about like the Roman Catholic Diocese. This is a creative way to share values and change lives. Trends don t have the final word. You can positively impact the next generation simply by sharing from your heart. For the full version of this article, request a FREE copy of Impact the Next Generation in 3 Questions by contacting Mark Morrow, Executive Director, The Catholic Foundation of West Michigan, at (616) or mmorrow@catholicfoundationwm.org - or bless your family today with a Christ-centered will at

8 ST. PATRICK CHURCH Page 8 PORTLAND, MICHIGAN June 2017 Dear Friends in Christ, I write to you on behalf of our Holy Father, Pope Francis. It is with great joy that I relay his message that the next Synod of Bishops, in October 2018, will focus on young people. In his own words, Pope Francis stated that I wanted you to be the center of attention, because you are in my heart. You make a difference in the world! You have the voice, the energy, and the desire to share your gifts for the common good. Let your voice be heard; not only here in the Diocese of Grand Rapids but all the way to the Vatican. Pope Francis wants to hear from you. The synod on Young People, the Faith, and Vocational Discernment will help our pastors and me, as your shepherd, learn what it means to walk with you. Over the course of this summer, I will spend time listening to you, the young people of our community, to find out how the Catholic Church can best serve you. I am also asking our pastors and parish youth ministers to spend time meeting with you to listen to you. During this time of consultation, I am inviting you to provide your feedback through our online survey bit.ly/dogrsynod2018 or by joining me in person at one of our diocesan listening sessions. Through your efforts the Church can more deeply understand her mission to better serve you and help you discover God s plan for your life. Sincerely yours in Christ, Most Reverend David J. Walkowiak Bishop of Grand Rapids
