3 ST. PATRICK CHURCH Page 3 PORTLAND, MICHIGAN There Goes the Neighborhood Colossians 3:1-5, 9-11 Where you live determines how you live. If you live in an apartment, you have to be mindful of your neighbors. If you share a homeowners association, you have to follow its rules. Even if you have a private home in a gated community, you have to pay taxes and keep up with the bills. Where do you live? No, not your address. Not the apartment number. Not your street or neighborhood. Not the town you chose because of its beauty or proximity to work. Where do you live? You live with Christ. The Letter to the Colossians calls Christian brothers and sisters those who were raised with Christ. And it tells them, in a beautiful phrase, where they live: Your life is hidden with Christ in God. Because we were raised with Christ, we live above, and we should seek the things that pertain to life above, not to life below. Think of what is above, not of what is on earth. We have a classy address. We live with Christ in God. Where we live determines how we live. We put aside the wants of the earth: immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and greed. We adopt the way of freedom and unity. It s good for the neighborhood. We are hidden with Christ in God. We are so close to Christ, that when he, our life, appears, we will appear with him in glory. Family Perspective By Bud Ozar In today s gospel Jesus teaches us: One s life does not consist of possessions. We spend so much time working to obtain more stuff; we don t have time for the people in our lives. What is enough? Are the words of Jesus, You fool, meant for us? Miscellaneous Quotes by Pope Francis You young people, my dear young friends, you have a particular sensitivity towards injustice, but you are often disappointed by facts that speak of corruption on the part of people who put their own interests before the common good. To you and to all, I repeat: never yield to discouragement, do not lose trust, do not allow your hope to be extinguished. Situations can change, people can change. Be the first to seek to bring good, do not grow accustomed to evil, but defeat it with good. The Church is with you, bringing you the precious good of faith, bringing Jesus Christ, who came that they may have life and have it abundantly (Jn 10:10). July 25, 2013, Varginha "Each of us has one hundred and sixty eight hours in a week, given God's gift of free will. One single hour in Eucharistic Adoration is so lile to give back to Him from whom all blessings come." Colleen Mauren ALTAR APPOINTMENTS August 6th & 7th 4:30 PM Colleen Mauren Fr. Larry King 7:30 AM Chuck Dibean Fr. Larry King Fr. Larry King 11:30 AM Carol Gunderman Fr. Larry King STEWARDSHIP REFLECTIONS Take care to guard against all greed, for though one may be rich, one s life does not consist of possessions. LUKE 12:15 The Gospel message today is so contrary to our modern culture where advertising continually tries to convince us that our value lies in the things we possess. Jesus showed us that our true value lies in the way we live our lives. He challenges us to not store up or hoard material possessions, but rather to live a grateful and generous lifestyle. 4:30 PM Zak Arwood, Bret Weller, Abigail Weller, Grace Thelen 7:30 AM Samantha Teachworth, Matthew Bond 9:30 AM Kaitlyn Coyne, Tyler Coyne, Emma Weller, Brett Price Intercessory Prayer That we may remember that the many possessions we strive to acquire are worthless in the eyes of the Lord.

Last year this Ministry only had 7 adult volunteers and 8 youth volunteers, we need more adult groups. If there are not enough adult volunteers for next year, this program may have to be cancelled. The more volunteers, the more groups, the less each group will have to do a Sunday session at the 9:30 am Masses. Materials and resources are available with little time of preparation. If you are interested or know of anyone that might be interested in helping the children understand the Gospel message and participate in the Eucharistic celebration at their own level, please contact Lori Thelen in the Faith Formation office at Ext. 419 or lorithelen@portlandstpats.com. 5 Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 5 July 31, 2016 Summer Question and Answers This is part IV in a series of question and answer sessions about St. Patrick School that will run throughout the summer. If you have any questions about St. Patrick School you would like answered, please them at randyhodge@portlandstpats.com. Q. Last week, you discussed shared time requirements but what about St. Patrick School teachers? Do they need to meet state certification standards? A. The simple answer is yes they do but there is more to it than that. Teachers at St. Patrick School are expected to be certified and highly qualified in the area they teach and to be practicing Catholics. If there are no applicants who meet both of these requirements, exceptions may be made to this rule. * If we do not have a qualified candidate who is Catholic, we would give precedence to a member of another Christian denomination who has a strong, faith-filled background assuming they meet the rest of the qualifications * If a non-certified teacher is hired, they must submit a plan that shows how and when they will be receiving certification. This plan is submitted to the Michigan Association of Nonpublic Schools in our annual report. The only exception to this is a religion or theology teacher. There is no state certification to teach religion or theology. Instead, we have other qualifications and they are expected to receive Master Catechist Certification through the Diocese of Grand Rapids. Q. What type of electives are available to your high school students? A. First it should be noted that at St. Patrick High School, students have seven class periods throughout the day. The schedule for freshmen and sophomore students are filled with required courses. The first semester of their junior year they can take one elective class and they can choose two elective courses during the second semester. During their senior year, students are required to take six courses and can be released during seventh hour if they so choose (they can take dual enrollment college course at home during this time). The elective classes that juniors and seniors have available are Yearbook, Art, Dual-Enrollment college courses, Physics, AP History, AP Biology, AP Calculus, German III, Spanish III, and Statistics. They can also choose to attend Heartlands Institute of Technology in Ionia. Q. Why do you not offer more elective courses for your high school students? A. On average, 60% of our students sign up and take at least one dualenrollment college course with at least 50% taking at least two dualenrollment classes each semester of their senior year. Another 10 15% attend Heartlands Institute of Technology in the afternoon. Between dual enrollment and HIT, there is not a large demand for other elective courses. Q. How many required courses do seniors need to take? A. Seniors must take a fourth year of English and Theology. They also must take one semester of career development and one of personal finance. If they only have three years of math credit going into their senior year (students may get a credit for Algebra I in 8th grade) then they must take a fourth year of math their final year as well. Q. How rigorous is a student s senior year at St. Patrick High School? A. Essentially, it can as rigorous as they want it to be. It is our goal that seniors can set their schedule based on their future career choice. Seniors planning on attending college after high school may take any combination of up to five dual enrollment college courses and AP classes if they so choose. Students who are planning on taking up a trade after high school can take their three required courses in the morning and leave and go to Heartlands Institute of Technology in the afternoon. It is our goal that our students will take a serious first step toward their future career goals in their final year of high school. 6 ST. PATRICK CHURCH Page 6 PORTLAND, MICHIGAN King s Korner Update on My Twin Brother s HealthP As you know, about three months ago my twin brother, Bill, had a bout with colon cancer along with a severe reaction to heparin which nearly claimed his life but necessitated the amputation of his arm. Well, against all odds and by the pure grace of God he pulled through that. Since then he has been doing physical & occupational therapy and was fitted with a prostheses. Three weeks ago he began doing chemotherapy which resulted in his losing 11 pounds the first week. His electrolytes were thrown all out of balance, so back to the hospital he went. As you also know, I just returned from vacation during which time I was out in Delaware again visiting Bill. I saw him the evening when I arrived, but the next morning I woke up with a serious cold, so that was the end of my visiting with my twin for the rest of the week because I didn t want to infect him with my germs. So, I just laid around his house all week and rested. I got a phone call this past Sunday afternoon informing me that Bill had been taken back into surgery to determine the cause of a bowel blockage he was having. When they scoped him they found that the small spot on his liver that they knew was cancerous had grown considerably and the cancer was also now in his stomach. Bottom line the doctors said there was nothing they could do for him now that it was in his stomach. They gave him about six months before the cancer would claim his life this time around. My younger brother and I will be going back out to Delaware in the near future to be of support to Bill and his family. I knew that when he pulled through the colon cancer surgery three months ago, during which time they removed 26 lymph nodes and found 14 of them cancerous, and survived the severe heparin reaction, that the Good Lord may have just been giving him some time to take a look at his life, make any changes that needed to be made, and get him back into church. Now it appears that s exactly what the Good Lord did, unless, of course, the God of our Lives has another miracle in mind. Lord, your will be done! I ask you to please keep my twin brother, Bill, and his family in your prayers. Just a Reminder about Our Saturday Evening Bus Pick-Up for ChurchP For anyone who needs help in getting to Mass, we have a shuttle bus service that is handicap accessible for anyone who needs it within a 5-mile radius of our church. There is no cost for you for this service. Just call the Parish Office and we ll assist you in making contact with the bus service. Another Reminder about Our Hearing Loop SystemP In the Sacristy in church we have two very discreet headphones that are available for use for anyone who has difficulty hearing but don t have a hearing aid. Just stop by the Sacristy before Mass and sign out one of the headphonespoh, and don t forget to return it after Mass! Fr.
