It also tells us God is present during the suffering. When bad things happen, God does not abandon us. STEWARDSHIP REFLECTIONS As they were marching out, they came upon a man of Cyrene, Simon by name; this man they pressed into service to carry his cross. MATTHEW 27:32 The Lord calls us to love God and to love our neighbor. Every day we are presented with opportunities to love our neighbor and help him carry his cross. These opportunities aren t usually big events, they are usually ordinary occurrences like helping someone carry their groceries or holding the door open for them. The key is putting the other person s needs before our own and not expecting anything in return. Prayer of the Faithful That we learn to put other s needs before our own and help our neighbor carry his cross. The Mystery of Suffering Isaiah 50:4-7 The speaker of today s first reading is a victim. He speaks, but people beat him, pull out the hairs of his beard, slap and spit on him. Why? He suffers all this because he has spoken God s word. Every morning God speaks to him and enables him to speak to others. This word gets him into trouble. But the speaker does not quit. Nor does he curse God who gives him these pointed words. He remains firm, committed to the word God gives him, even in the face of resistance. Although Isaiah wrote about the difficulties faced by faithful Israel in the midst of enemies, Christians read through these lines and see the image of Jesus. He received God s word, spoke it with eloquence, and suffered at the hands of his enemies. Do your words ever get you into trouble? Does it happen even when you say the right thing? If so, you stand in a long line of those who suffer because they are servants of God. The victim on the cross hangs in full view in our churches. Christians can face the agony of suffering as it befell Jesus and as it comes to us, because we know there is something more. Written by Paul Turner. 6 ST. PATRICK CHURCH Page 6 PORTLAND, MICHIGAN Kindergarten Screening is Just Around the Corner It is time to begin preparing for the next school year already, and that means it is time for Kindergarten screening. For many parents, especially those with a child entering school for the first time, this is a time of great excitement, or of great anxiety. We hope you were able to attend our open house that provided a lot of great information; if not, that is okay to. Our experienced staff is prepared to help you through this process. Kindergarten screening for St. Patrick School will be held on Friday, April 21 st. The screening takes from 45 minutes to an hour. Call the school office at (517) to make your appointment. We use the Gesell Developmental Observation (GDO), which is a standard procedure for observing a child s growth and development. This assessment is conducted by a trained examiner who makes observations of a child s behavior and then compares these observations with normative patterns for each developmental age. The GDO does not have right or wrong responses, but instead provides a composite picture of a child s developmental age, his or her individual rate of growth, and his or her integrity in the total growth process. The Gesell Institute recommends that every child receive a developmental screening to create a picture of where he or she is at in their unique process of growth and development. Children who attended our developmental kindergarten program for the current school year will not be screened again before entering kindergarten. If your child is shown to be ready for kindergarten we will place them in kindergarten, unless you request differently. If your child screens for DK, they will be placed in that classroom. We will not advance students to kindergarten if the screening shows they are not ready; we want to place students in a classroom where they will succeed. The GDO has proven to be very accurate over the eight years I have been an administrator at St. Pat s. Whether your child is entering kindergarten or another grade at St. Patrick for the first time. The Diocese of Grand Rapids will once again be offering Welcome Scholarships to families who do not already have a student in a diocesan Catholic school. The scholarships are for all new students from preschool through 11 th grade. Please visit our school website for complete information about the scholarship criterion, and a printable application. If you have any further questions in regards to St. Patrick s DK or kindergarten programs, please call me at (517) or sarahtownsend@portlandstpats.com. We welcome you to schedule a visit so you can see our classrooms and meet with your child s teacher. You will not be the first or only person who has done this. Kindergarten screening is a time to celebrate the next step of your child s development. Give us a call and let us help you with that celebration! Sarah Townsend, School Administrator

8 ST. PATRICK CHURCH Page 8 PORTLAND, MICHIGAN Four Keys to Finding Rest in a Chaotic World When asked how media criticism affects her career, actress Kate Winslet once said, I don t read any reviews, so I m oblivious to what they have to say. I m completely unaware. It s fantastic. With today s non-news, the concept of being completely unaware may feel impossible. The constant coverage of politics, tragedy and an overarching narrative of fear can leave us buried under anxiety and dread. But we don t have to live that way. God s Word illuminates how to find and experience rest, despite the chaos all around us: 1. Remember God is present. In her book The Gifts of Imperfection, author Brené Brown says, Faith is a place of mystery, where we find the courage to believe in what we cannot see and the strength to let go of our fear Recalling what you know is true will feed your faith and starve your uncertainty. You are never alone because God promised never to leave you. God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore will not we fear... (Psalm 46:1-2a) 2. Take thoughts captive. Our minds easily run away with us, but the Holy Spirit can help us pull them back into alignment with God s promises. Actively replace worries with Scripture and cling to whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things. (Philippians 4:8) 3. Be a catalyst for good. You can make a difference by supporting your parish or diocesan ministries and bless those in need and be blessed in return. A gift to an endowed fund in The Foundation is an opportunity to put good in motion for generations to come. 4. Know you re alive for such a time as this. Don t let chaos overwhelm the reality that you re here for a Divine purpose today. Serving others can create positive ripple effects of change around you. 9 ST. PATRICK CHURCH Page 9 PORTLAND, MICHIGAN Diocesan Pastoral Plan for Hispanic Ministry After a successful launch of the year-long planning process we are now in the data collection stage. This month you will be receiving more information from the Pastoral Plan Steering Committee seeking your assistance to collect information in the Diocese regarding services, ministries, demographics, and financial and cultural concerns of Hispanics in the diocese. The three ways we are gathering the data are: (1) a survey with basic information; (2) community focus groups in parishes; (3) meeting with pastors and leaders of the parishes in the diocese. We appreciate your help in this area since the data will inform the decisions, the content and initiatives that will supported and proposed by the Pastoral Plan for the Hispanic Ministry for the diocese. Universal Prayer Intercessions -For the many teams who will work to collect the information that will allow our diocese to create a Pastoral Plan for Hispanic Ministry. -For our Hispanic community, that people respond openly and share their concerns, needs and anxieties so that the diocese can develop an appropriate pastoral plan.
