Brother Knights, The word busy gets used often. When I feel myself getting a little too busy and especially as the new year begins, I try to step back to think about what is most important and work to make God first. And it is definitely a work in progress. Fr. McGivney founded the Knights of Columbus to care for widows and their children. This service and charity has grown to include a wider range of less fortunate, preparing our families and supporting religious vocations. Please contact me or Francis (John) Vallier to nominate a new member or to advance in the degrees. The Upcoming Events page lists some great ways to serve others and meet new people. Vivat Jesus, Bill Dues Night Stop by for dues night on Monday, January 4. I ll be cooking a pot of soup. There will be free refreshments and a chance to catch up with old friends and make a few new ones. Free Throw Contest The K of C Free Throw Contest will be held on Sunday, January 24 at 1:00 PM for boys and girls ages It is open to the public; spread the word. Contact me for more information. Tootsie Roll Drive The annual Knights of Columbus Tootsie Roll Drive will be March This is a great example of many hands make light work, both in volunteers and donations. Last year our council collected over $5,000 in small bills and change. Local beneficiaries included Portland Public Schools, Ionia Public Schools, and Ionia County Intermediate School District to provide supplies to their cognitively impaired programs and Area 6 Special Olympics for athletic events. 2 King s Korner for the Knights of the KING Rev. Fr. Larry King I ran across this little Christmas poem in a book by Brian Cavanangh, T.O.R. entitled More Sower s Seeds: Second Planting, and since it s Christmas time, I thought it might be good to reflect on this The poem is entitled: Twas the Night Before Jesus Came Author unknown Twas the night before Jesus came and all through the house not a creature was praying, not one in the house. Their Bibles were lain on the shelf without care, in hopes that Jesus would not come there. The children were dressing to crawl into bed, not once ever kneeling or bowing a head; And mom in her rocker with baby on her lap, was watching the late show while I took a nap; When out of the East there arose such a clatter, I sprang to my feet to see what was the matter. Away to the window I flew like a flash, threw open the shutters and threw up the sash. The light of His face made me cover my head, it was Jesus returning, just like He said. And though I possessed worldly wisdom and wealth, I cried when I saw Him in spite of myself. In the book of life, which He held in his hand, was written the name of every saved man. He spoke not a word as He searched for my name, when He said, It s not here! my head hung in shame. The people whose names had been written with love, He gathered to take to His Father above. With those who were ready He rose without a sound, while all the rest were left standing around. I fell to my knees, but it was too late: I had waited too long and thus sealed my fate. I stood and I cried as they rose out of sight. Oh, if only I had been ready tonight. In the words of this poem the meaning is clear, the coming of Jesus is drawing near. There s only one life and when the last name is called, we ll find that the Bible was true after all. Power of Prayer "People ask me: 'What will convert America and save the world?' 3 Ionia Social Club On October 28, Steve Goodman, with the help of fellow Knights, hosted an annual event for the Ionia Social Club. The club is a special needs group that gets together a few times a year to share a meal and games. There were about 35 club members and about as many caretakers, for a group of 65 participants. Thank you Steve and your crew for putting the principals of the Knights and Fr. McGivney in action. Building Corporation News You may have noticed some changes at the council hall. The Knights of Columbus Supreme Council has asked councils with Home Corporations (councils that own buildings) to make some updates to protect the council and the council name. The first change is the building has been renamed, Knights Hall. We ask that everyone refer to this and not the K of C Hall. This was done to protect the Order s name. The next change was an agreement between the council and building corporation. Information about this was provided at two meetings. We held a vote at our November 2 meeting.
