3 ST. PATRICK CHURCH Page 3 PORTLAND, MICHIGAN No Different Gospel Galatians 1:1-2, 6-10 A survey once asked if the bible teaches this statement: God helps those that help themselves. Three-fourths of Americans said yes. But that quote is not from the bible. It is from Benjamin Franklin. Jesus teaches that we should love our neighbor as ourselves, and give to those in need. It is not hard to hear the wrong message. In not-so-subtle ways our society promotes self-absorption and wastefulness of resources, the disposability of human life, and the irrelevance of religion. For believers, it takes real commitment to hold on. It has become counter-cultural to go to church on Sundays, contribute time and treasure to charities, and advocate peaceful solutions to problems. In Paul s day, people were hearing similar messages. And these messages were coming from preachers claiming to represent the gospel. It infuriated Paul, so he wrote an emotional letter to the churches of Galatia. Paul had helped proclaim the gospel there. Many Galatians were converts to the faith. Now word reached him that his message was becoming twisted, challenged, and unraveled. Paul writes, I am amazed that you are so quickly forsaking the one who called you by the grace of Christ for a different gospel not that there is another. The best antidote to false preaching is to know the gospel firsthand. Christians do well to include the reading of the bible in daily prayer, weekly church, and spiritual conversations. PAMA is excited to host a celebration event called Celebrate Portland exactly one year after the tornado hit our town on Wed, June 22, 2016 from 7-8pm. We want to celebrate the strength and unity of our community! This event will be held right on the street at the intersection of Bridge and Smith Streets. We will hear from several different representatives from the City, the businesses, the churches and the people of Portland. So mark your calendars! More details to come! Father Flohe Field A special committee and the plant and grounds committee have been working on a replacement building for several months. The parish hired an architect who attended meetings and then produced renderings. From those drawings we are now gathering specifications and cost estimates. When we finish with the specifications, we are submitting them to the architect to incorporate in new drawings. Once blueprints are updated and costs compiled, we will present our findings to the Diocesan Building Committee for further review. We hope to gain approval to move forward by mid June. It would be our hope to break ground this summer. Let s Got to Bat for Kids Join Catholic Charities West Michigan in a celebration of family at the annual Let s Go to Bat for Kids! The Media Giants are back to take on the Padres in this fun-filled evening for the entire family. The event is FREE and open to the entire public! 5 The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ Page 5 May 29, 2016 Saying Goodbye to the Class of 2016 When I began my tenure as administrator of St. Patrick School, the students from the Class of 2016 were in the 5th grade and wrapping up their final year on the first floor of the school. The following year they would make the big jump to the second floor and become middle school students. Eight years later, on Sunday, May 22, we said goodbye to the Class of 2016 as they entered a new phase of their lives. Our goal is to ensure that when our seniors receive their diplomas in front of the altar on graduation day, they will have a rock-solid foundation for a successful life--a life that our Lord has prepared for each one of them. Our goal is that they will continue to serve as living representatives of our school mission statement We Pray! We Learn! We Achieve! It is my belief the Class of 2016 not only lived our mission statement but leaves our school with that rock-solid foundation in place. They provided sound leadership and were more than willing to serve as role models for our younger students. They had solid suggestions for ways to improve our school and were well-prepared to be leaders throughout their senior year. I ve had the opportunity to watch this class grow throughout their high school years. It was during their sophomore year that I noticed them pulling together as a class, and from that point forward, they never looked back. By the time they were seniors, they were well-prepared for the challenges they would face that year, like rigorous AP courses and dual enrollment college courses. Being seniors meant being leaders in class, in the halls and at school mass. Graduation day arrived and it was time to say goodbye. During Commencement, Salutatorian Cammi Schneider and Valedictorian Emily Miros gave their speeches about the Class of 2016 and their time together at St. Patrick School. They shared memories, spoke of their future, and talked about the achievements of their class. The graduates were called forward to receive their diploma from Bishop David Walkowiak and one by one they turned their tassels and the Class of 2016 joined a group of more than 2,200 living Shamrock alumni around the world. A slide show followed the presentation of diplomas and our Pastor, Fr. Larry King closed the ceremony with a blessing of the graduates. Finally, the class of 2016 processed out of church and into the future. There were hugs to give and pictures to take. Smiles were all around as parents and grads accepted handshakes. Finally, caps were tossed as an official ending to a great school career by a great group of students. I am very proud of our senior class and all they accomplished in their time at St. Patrick School. 70% of the class were named as CMAC Scholar Athletes; 50% of the class graduated with a weighted GPA higher than a 4.0 and 60% graduated with honors (3.790 GPA or higher). They received over $410,000 (an average of more than $20,500 per graduate) in combined scholarship money for the college they plan on attending in the fall. They also received a combined total of $663,650 in scholarship money from all colleges they applied to ($33,182 per graduate). They are leaving us with a rock solid foundation of values, knowledge, wisdom, and faith. I can say with the utmost certainty that they prayed, they learned, and yes, without a doubt, they achieved. May God bless every one of them and their future endeavors as they move to the next phase of their lives. Single Moms Care & Support Group We are pleased to announce the start of a Single Moms Care and Support Group for single mothers in our community who are seeking friendship and support on the Single Mom journey.
