3 Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord Page 3 March 29, 2015 The Mystery of Suffering Isaiah 50:4-7 The speaker of today s first reading is a victim. He speaks, but people beat him, pull out the hairs of his beard, slap and spit on him. Why? He suffers all this because he has spoken God s word. Every morning God speaks to him and enables him to speak to others. This word gets him into trouble. But the speaker does not quit. Nor does he curse God who gives him these pointed words. He remains firm, committed to the word God gives him, even in the face of resistance. Although Isaiah wrote about the difficulties faced by faithful Israel in the midst of enemies, Christians read through these lines and see the image of Jesus. He received God s word, spoke it with eloquence, and suffered at the hands of his enemies. Do your words ever get you into trouble? Does it happen even when you say the right thing? If so, you stand in a long line of those who suffer because they are servants of God. The victim on the cross hangs in full view in our churches. Christians can face the agony of suffering as it befell Jesus and as it comes to us, because we know there is something more. Eucharistic Adoration Offering their entire lives with Christ (at Eucharistic Adoration) to the Father in the Holy Spirit, they derive from this an increase of faith, hope, and charity. Please pray for Melody Brown and Joel Enz as they prepare for Sacraments of Initiation in the Catholic Church this Saturday evening during the Easter Vigil which begins at 8:30 pm. Important News from the Parish Office The Church will be CLOSED, Tuesday, March 31st to was the floor and prepare for Easter. The Parish Office will be closed on Good Friday (April 3rd) and Easter Monday (April 6th). STEWARDSHIP REFLECTIONS Pilate again said to them, Then what shall I do with the man whom you call the King of the Jews? And they cried out again, Crucify him. Mark 15:12-13 Jesus told us whatever you do for the least of my brothers, you do for me. Every day we are presented opportunities to help someone. Every day we have the opportunity to see the face of Jesus in others and be the face of Jesus to others. Pray for the courage to stand up for those in need of our help. That we have the courage to stand up for those in need of our help. Family Perspective By Bud Ozar The Passion of Jesus makes it clear: no one escapes suffering. Suffering is inevitable, but no one should suffer alone. That is one of the primary roles of families, to stand with and support each other in suffering. The schedule will be as follows: Sunday, March 29th 12:45 PM take down red after Mass and leave bare until set-up for Holy Thursday Wednesday, April 1st 6:00 PM set-up Chapel for Holy Thursday in Parish Hall (for Altar of Repose) and the Church. Holy Thursday, April 2nd after adoration approximately 8:45 PM remove all banners and white decorations. Preset Cross for Good Friday. We will still have Bible study at the Parish Office after school on Mondays Below is a picture of some 7th grade boys who attended the Men s Conference with their Dads on March 14. Way to go Sam, Jeff and Rilex! High School On Thursday March 19 eight of us traveled to Ionia to help at a soup kitchen the youth spent much of the time in conversation with those being served. It was rewarding for all; as one youth put it they are just people like you and me. We plan on making this a regular part of our ministry. Way to go; Amelia, Maddy, Rachael, Cole, Josh, and Megan! On Sunday we heard a moving message on Love from Geri Ryan. Rachael Pohl also gave an inspired and passionate oration on Pro-Life. All are welcome for another fun and faith filled evening this Sunday. Meet at Christ In Action (C.I.A. ) Headquarters at 6:00 pm. We will hear a message from the Skit Guys, then we will see which team can win at chase the ace and run away with all the smarties. Bring a friend and be entered into a special drawing. Remember if twelve or more youth come we will have a special prize drawing. Congrats to Logan Bartosh our most recent winner of a Little Caesar s gift card! Congrats to Meg and Rachael for winning last week s relay skills race!!! The exhibit will feature the presentation-shroud Encounter-by Russ Breault on Friday, April 2, 6:30-8 PM. Russ Breault has been researching and lecturing on The Shroud of Turin for over 30 years. Casino Bus Trip The Portland Knights of Columbus Council 2168 along with Portland Relay for Life will be sponsoring a bus trip to Firekeepers Casino on Wednesday May 13, The cost is $30.00 with each participant receiving $20 in casino play and a $5 food voucher. The bus will leave the KC Hall parking lot located at 690 Maynard Road Portland at 9 a.m. and arrive at the casino at 10:00 am. PATRICK CHURCH Page 6 PORTLAND, MICHIGAN King s Korner The following article is from ENVISION, a Diocesan Newsletter for March/April 2015 Sacrament of Reconciliation: FAQs for formation This is the second in a series of articles intended for teachers, catechists and parents of children in grades 1-8. What bible stories can I use to explain what Jesus taught about forgiveness and reconciliation? Here are some of the many stories that can be used: The Parable of the Lost Sheep (Luke 15: 1-7) The Parable of the Prodigal Son (Luke 15: 11-32) Jesus Forgives a Sinful Woman (Luke 7: 36-50) Zacchaeus is Forgiven (Luke 19: 1-10) The Woman at the Well (John 4: 4-42) Jesus Gives His Disciples the Authority to Forgive Sins (John 20: 21-23) I thought that only those with mortal sins were required to go to Confession. Has that rule changed? Many people think that children are not capable of mortal sin. If that is true, why do children have to go? No, that rule has not changed. According to the Catechism of the Catholic Church, after having attained the age of discretion, each of the faithful is bound by an obligation faithfully to confess serious sins at least once a year. Furthermore, anyone who is aware of having committed a mortal sin must not receive Holy Communion, even if he experiences deep contrition, without having first received sacramental absolution, unless he has a grave reason for receiving Communion and there is no possibility of going to confession (CCC, n. 1457). You are correct in asserting that many people question if children are capable of serious or mortal sin. According to the National Directory for Catechesis, the formation of conscience is influenced by many human factors, such as the person s age, intellectual capacity, psychological capacity, emotional maturity, family experience, and cultural and social conditions (National Directory for Catechesis, pg. 165). However, this does not mean that children should not participate in the sacrament of reconciliation. Instead, it is important to return to the Catechism for direction. Without being strictly necessary, confession of everyday faults (venial sins) is nevertheless strongly recommended by the church. Indeed, the regular confession of our venial sins helps us form our conscience, fight against evil tendencies, let ourselves be healed by Christ and progress in the life of the Spirit (CCC, n. 1458). The Church believes that the example of Christ s life and his teachings are the norm in the formation of conscience. The person s relationship with Christ, expressed by frequent participation in the sacramental and prayer life of the Church, is the basis for the formation of the Christian moral conscience (National Directory for Catechesis, pg. 165).
