3 ST. PATRICK CHURCH Page 3 PORTLAND, MICHIGAN Rumor Control 2 Thessalonians 1:11 2:2 Rumors are very hard to control. Once they are out they create their own truth. Even if they are not true, they create a suspicion that remains. It is not fair. With speedy communication, rumors can be challenged and falsified more quickly. But they also fly faster. And they can do a world of damage. In the days of St. Paul, rumors traveled more slowly, but so did clarifications. It was very hard to get the right message out. This was especially challenging for the nuances Paul was trying to make. For example, he believed that Jesus was coming back very soon, and people should behave accordingly. But Jesus had not yet come. Paul would have known about that. In his Second Letter to the Thessalonians, Paul tries to put down a rumor that Christ had come, while promoting the idea that he was still coming. We ask you, brothers and sisters, with regard to the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our assembling with him, not to be shaken out of your minds suddenly, or to be alarmed either by a spirit, or by an oral statement, or by a letter allegedly from us to the effect that the day of the Lord is at hand. Some people will believe anything about the coming of Christ. We believe Paul. Christ may not have come today, but we live as if he will. Written by Paul Turner. 5 Thirtieth Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 5 October 23, 2016 Join us for a Fall packed full of events Most people know and understand that the beginning of the school year is always busy. This year is no different and all of us at St. Patrick Catholic School have been very busy making it hard to believe it s the middle of October already. Looking ahead however, there is no immediate let up in the schedule with many upcoming activities scheduled between now and Christmas Break. Here are some of the activities taking place that we would like you to know about and join us. October 30: Confirmation members of the 8 th grade class at St. Patrick and those in our religious education program at the parish and their families will travel to the Cathedral of Saint Andrew in Grand Rapids to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation beginning at 3:00 p.m. Most Reverend David J. Walkowiak, bishop of Grand Rapids, will preside at the ceremony. October 31: Pay It Forward Day - Students will participate in our school s annual community service day known as Pay It Forward Day. Students will be out in the community helping local residents and local organizations with various projects. Say Hi if you see our kids around town. We would love to come help you! If you need your yard raked or a small service project completed and are within walking distance of the school, please contact the school office ( ) and let us know what we can do to help and the location of the project. October 31: Elementary students will have their annual Halloween parties and costume parade through the school gymnasium. November 1: Fr. Larry will preside at Mass to celebrate the Solemnity of All Saints. Please join our secondary students at 7:30 a.m. Mass and our elementary students at the 9:30 a.m. Mass in the church. November 4: A series of speakers will visit the school and present to students in grades 6-12 on the following topics: Social Media and Cyber Safety, The Dangers of Substance Abuse, Human Trafficking: What is it and How to Keep Yourself Safe, and Teenager Emotions and Mental Health. November 10: Please join our student body at 9:30 a.m. Mass as Fr. Ron Hutchinson, Director of Priestly Vocations for the Diocese of Grand Rapids presides as we celebrate Vocations Awareness Week. November 11: We will host our annual Veterans Day assembly in the school gymnasium beginning at 10:00 a.m. This is open to the public and all veterans are welcome and encouraged to attend. There will be a small reception to follow in the parish hall. November 29: We will host our annual college night which is open to students and families of all schools in the greater Portland area. There will be two keynote speakers. One from Lansing Community College and one from Aquinas College. We are hoping to have representatives from at least 10 colleges on hand for this evening. December 7: The high school classes will participate in our annual retreat day. Our seniors will travel to the Fr. Solanus Casey Center in Detroit and the 9 th grade will travel to Aquinas College for their respective retreats. The sophomore and junior retreat will take place on our school campus. In addition, it s sure to be a full Fall of sports teams competing in state tournaments and our annual fall sports banquet. Every effort will be made to accommodate your request. Bake Sale The Welcoming and Social Committee will be hosting a BAKE SALE after all Masses on the weekend of October 29 and 30. COFFEE AND DONUTS will also be served after all of the Sunday Masses. Please stop by the Parish Hall to buy your homemade treats, and to socialize with your friends and fellow parishioners. The proceeds of our bakesales help to fund various parish social events, such as the Senior Citizen Appreciation Dinner, the Parish Picnic, and the Ethnic Dinner. If you would like to donate baked goods, please drop them off in the Parish Hall. We will be there before and after all of the Masses.

6 ST. PATRICK CHURCH Page 6 PORTLAND, MICHIGAN Celebrating Sunday Your own Sunday By Gertrude Mueller Nelson T ake a quick look at your personal and familial Sunday experience. Does it offer that something more we long for? Or has it just degenerated into a jumble of high expectations, unconscious longings, catching up chores, arguments, a boring hour at church, family feuds. Perhaps Mondays are blue, not so much because the weekend is over, but because Sunday didn t really happen. Ritual and ceremony What do we want and how can we approach this desire for restoration in the holy? Ritual/ceremony is a way for us to name and engage the inner mystery we seek. Ritual action is the creative, poetic act that speaks directly to the heart. When we give for to what is formless and order to what is chaotic, when we give shape and name and meaning to what is fundamental to our humanness, we lift our vague and muddled desires into mindfulness and we have the stuff of ceremony. Rituals can give Friday a different flavor from Saturday, and Sunday s conclusion can point us, with a simple ritual, in the direction of Sunday. Simple, mindful acts help us to set forth the container within which we can safely catch something of the Uncontainable. A good Bad Friday Every Sunday needs to be preceded by a Friday, just as Good Friday was necessary to the resurrection on Easter. We need a little Good Friday in our week which means: a Bad Friday have a bad day. We have to die a little. We need to create for ourselves a consciously BAD DAY. How? We might finish up the tasks we have shunted to the corner of our desk all week. We scrub the bathroom or balance the check book. We risk a non-defensive reconciliation with our co-workers or our family members. If you have something against your brother {or your sister], leave your gift and first be reconciled. Then offer your gift on the altar. (Matthew 5:24). Friday night, after we have died a little, then allows us to celebrate a little. I know a family who has, come hell or high water a family night on Friday evening. They have a lovely family dinner followed by a family meeting which heals and resolves and makes everyone equals once more before God and family. In the Jewish Sabbath ritual, it is the Jewish mother who lights the Sabbath candles at sunset to invite and usher in the Sabbath bride, as this holy time is called. Even before the Sabbath is there, she sets the ceremonies in motion. She prepares to prepare. With such an act the woman sets the tone and literally illuminates the goals and purposes of our gathering in prayerful preparation. It is, indeed, that poetic value that brings to light our purpose and reminds us to be clear and conscious. The gesture says that this week is at an end. A new beginning dawns and with it we look backward and forward and see our place in the scheme of things. In that light, we proceed with the rituals that prepare us to prepare, so that Sunday will be a day like no other day in the week. Herewith, in our hearts, in our households, the gathering rites of Sunday worship have begun. The Saturday catch up work that you vaguely felt compelled to do is now behind you. The laundry is done. Or the grass is mowed. Maybe you do something special in preparation for Sunday s feast: Bake a cake or make brunch muffins or pick a fresh bouquet of flowers. Then at five o clock you stop everything and clean up: Take a leisurely bath. Renew yourself. Plan your Sunday so that it is a true recreation of soul and self and family. Read the Lectionary Readings. (What would you say if it were your job to give a homily on these readings?) Then plan a mitzvah evening with your spouse or friends.
