1 Welcome to the Parish Church of St Mark Serving the people of Broomhill & Broomhall A Sharing in the Hospitality of Christ A Service of Holy Communion Sunday 27 July 2014 at am Sixth Sunday after Trinity WELCOME AND GREETINGS, especially if you are new to St Mark s. May you soon discover what you are seeking and find companions for life s journey. This communion is more complete with you being a part of it. Today s liturgy takes the form of a simple, yet profound, meal of thanksgiving and hospitality, a Eucharist or Holy Communion, which originates in the ministry of Jesus and has characterised Christian worship through the centuries. LARGE PRINT versions of worship materials are available. Before the service begins, we are all invited to share in a few moments of quietness in preparation for worship. Preparing for worship Once Jesus was asked by the Pharisees when the kingdom of God was coming, and he answered, The kingdom of God is not coming with things that can be observed; nor will they say, Look, here it is! or There it is! For, in fact, the kingdom of God is among you. (Luke ) 1

LIKEWISE THE SPIRIT helps us in our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we ought, but that very Spirit intercedes with sighs too deep for words. 27 And God, who searches the heart, knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God. 28 We know that all things work together for good for those who love God, who are called according to his purpose. 29 For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that he might be the firstborn within a large family. 30 And those whom he predestined he also called; and those whom he called he also justified; and those whom he justified he also glorified. 31 What then are we to say about these things? If God is for us, who is against us? 32 He who did not withhold his own Son, but gave him up for all of us, will he not with him also give us everything else? 33 Who will bring any charge against God s elect? It is God who justifies. 34 Who is to condemn? It is Christ Jesus, who died, yes, who was raised, who is at the right hand of God, who indeed intercedes for us. 35 Who will separate us from the love of Christ? Will hardship, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? 36 As it is written, For your sake we are being killed all day long; we are accounted 4

5 as sheep to be slaughtered. 37 No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. 38 For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor rulers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, 39 nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. Let us listen for the word of the Lord. A time of quietness for reflection. Hymn SEE THE KINGDOM grow and flourish from the smallest shoot or seed; on its spreading branches bearing fruit to meet creation s need. Here the destitute find shelter, sick are healed and captives freed. Constantly, through light and darkness, will the fruitful kingdom grow, spreading peace and bearing justice, giving further seeds to sow; from the hand of God, abundant grace and goodness overflow. Let us now in perfect freedom take our place within its shade, looking forward to the promise by this parable displayed, when injustice shall be ended, burdens lifted, debts repaid. JESUS PUT BEFORE THEM another parable: The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed that someone took and sowed in his field; 32 it is the smallest of all the seeds, but when it has grown it is the greatest of shrubs and becomes a tree, so that the birds of the air come and make nests in its branches. 33 He told them another parable: The kingdom of heaven is like yeast that a woman took and mixed in with three measures of flour until all of it was leavened. 44 The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field, which someone found and hid; then in his joy he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field. 45 Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant in search of fine pearls; 46 on finding one pearl of great value, he went and sold all that he had and bought it. 47 Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a net that was thrown into the sea and caught fish of every kind; 48 when it was full, they drew it ashore, sat down, and put the good into baskets but threw out the bad. 49 So it will be at the end of the age. The angels will come out and separate the evil from the righteous 50 and throw them into the furnace of fire, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. 51 Have you understood all this? They answered, Yes. 52 And he said to them, Therefore every scribe who has been trained for the kingdom of heaven is like the master of a household who brings out of his treasure what is new and what is old. 7 Declaration of Faith Let us declare our faith in God. (please stand) WE BELIEVE in God the Father, from whom every family in heaven and on earth is named. We believe in God the Son, who lives in our hearts through faith, and fills us with his love. We believe in God the Holy Spirit, who strengthens us with power from on high. Prayers of Penitence & Forgiveness Hear the teaching of Christ: you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength. 7

8 This is the first commandment. And the second is this: You shall love your neighbour as yourself. In the light of Christ s teaching and in the strength of God s forgiveness, let us acknowledge our wrongdoing and failures. Silence for preparation. MOST MERCIFUL GOD, we confess that we have sinned in thought, word and deed. We have not loved you with our whole heart. We have not loved our neighbours as ourselves. In your mercy forgive what we have been, help us to amend what we are, and direct what we shall be; that we may do justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with you, our God. Amen. May God forgive you, Christ renew you and the Spirit enable you to grow in love. Amen. Greeting of Peace (please stand) We are the body of Christ. In the one Spirit we were all baptized into one body. Let us then pursue all that makes for peace and builds up our common life. The peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you. 10 Communing Preparation Tokens of our response to God, bread and wine, and the collection, are offered. Yours, Lord, is the greatness, the power, the glory, the splendour, and the majesty; for everything in heaven and on earth is yours. All things come from you, and of your own do we give you. 1 Chronicles The Great Prayer of Thanksgiving Let us pray. (please sit or kneel) The Lord be with you and also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give thanks and praise. You are worthy of our thanks and praise, Lord God of truth, for by the breath of your mouth you have spoken your word, and all things have come into being. You fashioned us in your image and placed us in the garden of your delight. Though we chose the path of rebellion you would not abandon your own. 10

11 Again and again you drew us into your covenant of grace. You gave your people the law and taught us by your prophets to look for your reign of justice, mercy and peace. As we watch for the signs of your kingdom on earth, we echo the song of the angels in heaven, evermore praising you and singing: Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of truth and love, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Lord God, you are the most holy one, enthroned in splendour and light, yet in the coming of your Son Jesus Christ you reveal the power of your love made perfect in our human weakness. Embracing our humanity, Jesus showed us the way of salvation; loving us to the end, he gave himself to death for us; dying for his own, he set us free from the bonds of sin, that we might rise and reign with him in glory. On the night he gave up himself for us all he took bread and gave you thanks; he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of me. 11

12 In the same way, after supper he took the cup and gave you thanks; he gave it to them, saying: Drink this, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me. Therefore we proclaim the death that he suffered on the cross, we celebrate his resurrection, his bursting from the tomb, we rejoice that he reigns at your right hand on high and we long for his coming in glory. As we recall the one, perfect sacrifice of our redemption, Father, by your Holy Spirit let these gifts of your creation be to us the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ; form us into the likeness of Christ and make us a perfect offering in your sight. Look with favour on your people and in your mercy hear the cry of our hearts. Bless the earth, heal the sick, let the oppressed go free and fill your Church with power from on high. Gather your people from the ends of the earth to feast with Mark and all your saints at the table in your kingdom, where the new creation is brought to perfection in Jesus Christ our Lord; by whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honour and glory be yours, almighty Father, for ever and ever. 13 Lord s Prayer & Sharing in Communion OUR FATHER in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power and the glory are yours now and for ever. Amen. The bread is broken. We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. Though we are many, we are one body, because we all share in one bread. Words of invitation follow. Christ s table has been prepared and Christ is the one who beckons. Come take your place and feed on him. Everyone is invited to share in the communion through receiving the bread and wine or, if preferred, a prayer of blessing. Please approach the altar rail with those around you. 14 Afterwards, the choir will sing, Jesu the very thought of thee, by Glenn Rudolph (b 1951). Jesu, the very thought of Thee with sweetness fills my breast; but sweeter far Thy face to see, and in Thy presence rest. No voice can sing, no heart can frame, nor can the memory find a sweeter sound than Thy Jesus' Name, the Saviour of mankind. Jesu, our only joy be Thou, as Thou our prize wilt be; Jesus! be Thou our glory now, and through eternity. At the conclusion, silence is shared. Prayers of Commitment Let us pray. Venturing FATHER OF ALL, we give you thanks and praise, that when we were still far off you met us in your Son and brought us home. Dying and living, he declared your love, gave us grace, and opened the gate of glory. May we who share Christ s body live his risen life; we who drink his cup bring life to others; we whom the Spirit lights give light to the world. Keep us firm in the hope you have set before us, so we and all your children shall be free, and the whole earth live to praise your name; through Christ our Lord. Amen. Announcements 14
