2 Page 2 Christian Spirituality Grace, mercy and peace from God our Father and our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ amen. God has made us both spiritual and physical beings. We have a soul and a body. God provides for our bodily needs by giving us food and clothing, family and friends, good government, good weather and medicine. We also try to take care of our body by eating right, exercising and getting enough sleep. Our physical welfare is certainly important, but so is our spiritual welfare. God gives to us His Word to sustain us in our spiritual life. The Word of God is a wonderful gift! It is a gift that we all want to receive. It starts with coming to the Divine service at church. It is during the Divine Service that the Lord comes to us in His Word to forgive our sins and to strengthen our faith. Our life of receiving God s Word does not end at church, but continues in our homes. Each day we get the opportunity to read and meditate upon God s Word. Each day we get to carry God s Word in our hearts as we think about the eternal things of God. God provides for our spiritual life by giving to us His Word. As followers of Christ, we daily spend time with it. Here are two devotional books that might be helpful to you in your daily time in God s Word. Portals of Prayer: The Portals of Prayer are short devotions that allow you to ponder on one verse in the Bible throughout the day. You can pick up a copy of the Portals of Prayer in the fellowship hall. Treasury of Daily Prayer. The Treasury of Daily Prayer is a book that is published by Concordia Publishing House. Each day you will find a psalm, Old Testament Reading, New Testament Reading, Prayer of the Day, a brief writing from a Church Father or Theologian, and a stanza from a hymn. It is a more in-depth devotion that takes about 20 minutes to read. It is well worth the time! I highly recommend using the Treasury of Daily Prayer in your devotional life. There are many other good devotional books published by CPH that you could use. You could also read one of the Palms each day or study the Catechism. The Lord has made us both physical and spiritual beings. He provides for our body but He also provides for our soul. The gift that He gives to us to sustain our faith is His Word. Let us treasure His Word daily! God s blessings to you all. In Christ, Pastor Kevin Wendorf ALTAR: Linda Blessman Nan Fornoff Sept :00p.m. Sat.
