2 A Life of Thanksgiving Hear, O Lord, and be merciful to me! O Lord, be my helper! You have turned for me my mourning into dancing; you have loosed my sackcloth and clothed me with gladness, that my glory may sing your praise and not be silent. O Lord my God, I will give thanks to you forever! Psalm : (ESV) Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. 1 Thessalonians :-18 (ESV) Greetings in the Name of Christ! Over the next several months we will be taking a closer look at different aspects of the Christian life. We have already taken a closer look at the Christian life of Repentance and Forgiveness and the Christian life of Word and Prayer. This month we will be looking at the Christian life of Thanksgiving. Indeed the Christian life is one of giving thanks to God. It is the Lord who created us and He is the one who sustains us in this life. He gives us all the earthly blessings that we have. The Lord is also our Savior. He is gracious to us, He forgives our sins, and He gives to us the gift of salvation through His Son, Jesus Christ. King David said it well in Psalm. The Lord is merciful to us. He is our helper in the time of trouble. He has cleansed our sins and has placed upon us the righteousness of Jesus Christ. We are indeed clothed with gladness. There is no way that we could ever repay God for what He has done for us. He is our creator and our redeemer. We can never repay God but we are moved by the Holy Spirit to give thanks. Indeed the Christian life is one of giving thanks. We are thankful to God for the many blessings that He has given us. Let us remember these blessings while we are enjoying our Thanksgiving holiday. Let us remember the blessings of family, friends, food and shelter. Let us remember the giver of these gifts. Most of all let us give thanks to the Lord for the salvation that He has won for us. Through Christ Jesus death has been defeated, and Satan has been crushed. Through Christ Jesus we have been given eternal life. It is a life in the full presence of God for all eternity. As followers of Christ we are moved to call upon the Name of the Lord in praise and in prayer. We are moved to give thanks to God. The Christian life is a glorious life. It is a life of giving thanks. Amen. Think of Moses and the burning bush. Quietly watching over his father-in-law s sheep, Moses saw a bush on fire but not being consumed. When God spoke to Moses telling him to remove his shoes, Moses realized who was speaking, and Moses hid his face, for he was afraid to look at God (Exodus 3:6). But he listened and spent 40 years showing adoration to God by obediently leading God s people according to God s direction. Isaiah writes about the vision through which God called him to be His prophet: I saw the Lord...high and lifted up [and the angel] called to another and said: Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts. His reaction was to confess his sinfulness and, like Moses, to adore God by answering His question, Whom shall I send? with Here am I. Send me! (Isaiah 6:1-8). This is the Christmas season, and we cannot help but think of the Wise Men, too, who came in search of the newborn King, bringing their gifts and bowing before Him in adoration. Matthew 2:11 records, And going into the house they saw the Child with Mary His mother, and they fell down and worshiped Him. And they offered to the Christ Child the gifts they had brought for Him, gold and frankincense and myrrh. The shepherds adored Him, too. They heard about Jesus from the angels as they sat outdoors watching their sheep and ran to Bethlehem to see the Christ Child. They didn t have gifts to bring as the Magi did, but they, too, responded in adoration. Luke writes, And when they saw it, they made known the saying that had been told them concerning the Child. And all who heard it wondered at what the shepherds told them (Luke 2:17-18). God gives gifts to each of us and uses us to tell the Good News of the birth of His Son Who came to bring us forgiveness of sins and life eternal. Some of us, like the Wise Men, are blessed with monetary gifts to be used to support mission and ministry. Others of us are more like the shepherds, able to make known [what has] been told [us] concerning the Child. By God s grace, all of us can respond in faithful obedience to God s Word. In these ways, we adore our Savior. Page 14 Page 3
