5 From the Pastor 5 But as for you, continue in what you have learned and firmly believed, knowing from whom you learned it, and how from childhood you have known the sacred writings that are able to instruct you for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. 2 TIMOTHY 3:14-15 HOW DO YOU KNOW when you have learned enough? How do you know that you have fully comprehended, fully trusted, fully believed everything that God has commanded, accomplished, and promised for you? In short, how do you know when your Christian basic training is complete? The truth is, the development of our Christian lives and Christian faith is never complete in this earthly life. We must constantly grow. We must constantly contend with the thoughts and worldviews of a world gone awry. This is not to be confused with having a strong enough faith to be saved the simple presence of our God-given faith is more than enough to declare us righteous before God and worthy of eternal life on Christ s account. However, we should always seek to be taught and re-taught and reminded of the simple basic facts on which our faith depends and to which it clings. In other words, it is always worthwhile, indeed necessary, to return to the catechism, that is, the basic truths from Scripture in condensed form. In Martin Luther s words: Many see the catechism as a poor, common teaching, which they can read through once and immediately understand. They can throw the book into a corner and be ashamed to read it again. But for myself I say this: I am also a doctor and preacher; yes, as learned and experienced as all people who have such assump ons and contentment. Yet I act as a child who is being taught the catechism. Every morning and whenever I have me I read and say, word for word, the Ten Commandments, the Creed, the Lord s Prayer, the Psalms, and such. I must s ll read and study them daily. Yet I cannot master the catechism as I wish. But I must remain a child and pupil of the catechism, and am glad to remain so. (LC, L P, 5, 7-8) AS WE ENTER THE SEASON OF LENT this Ash Wednesday, February 14, the congregation of Peace Lutheran Church will hear and speak, learn and re-learn the basics of our faith as we consider the six chief parts of Luther s Small Catechism, particularly on Sunday mornings. In preparation for this return to basic training, I highly recommend that every member dig out your old Small Catechisms and brush off the cobwebs, ready to read and re-read them throughout the week right alongside your usual daily Bible reading. (If you don t do daily Bible reading yet, now s a good time to start! Check out the Congregation of Peace at Prayer inserts every Sunday!) If you don t have a Small Catechism, we ll gladly provide the basic 30-page version, or you can procure the latest 2017 edition of Luther s Small Catechism with Explanation either from or Amazon for around $15 certainly a worthy investment. Truth be told, this is a high enough recommendation that if I were a school teacher or university professor, I would simply make it a required text! The cornerstone and foundation of our faith is Jesus Christ, and Him crucified for us. The catechism the Ten Commandments, the Creed, the Lord s Prayer, Baptism, Confession, and the Lord s Supper is how God builds us on that firm foundation through His Word and Spirit. This Lent, may God use the discipline of getting back to those basics help us grow both in our own faith and in taking advantage of the opportunities He gives us to share that faith with our friends and loved ones. 8 Especially for the Ladies... 8 Women of Peace met at the church January 6th, at 10 a.m. We opened with several devotions. We discussed the treasures report. Thank yous were received from World Relief LCMS, Concordia Seminary Guild and Pastor Roberts. We went over an LWML newsletter about where our mites are going and wanted outreach. Robin gave a Bible study on the Magnificat. We enjoyed a lunch of hot chicken salad, tossed salad, blueberry muffins, with cookies and candies for dessert. We will meet at Wendy s at noon on Friday, February 2nd, and then go to the church for Bible study. All women are welcome!
