4 EDUCATION HOUR TODAY Adult Bible Class It s All About Jesus led by Pastor Elliott, fellowship hall Adult Bible Class God s Word for Today led by Steve Haase, school library Sunday School 3 year olds through high school will meet in the Sanctuary for opening. Children can be picked up at 10:30 in the following rooms: Parents & 2 s Room 4A 3 & 4 yr. olds 4C Kindergarten 1A 1 st grade 3A 2 nd grade 2A 3 rd & 4 th grade 1C 5 th grade 6B 6 th grade 4B 7 th & 8 th grade 2B The students and staff of St. John Lutheran School are continuing their emphasis on the sanctity of life during the month of October. We are not actively seeking donations this year, but if you feel inclined, you may make a monetary gift to the Lutherans for Life organization and drop it by the school office. All contributions are tax-deductible in accord with IRS regulations. Carpenters needed - We are looking for people to come help build the set for the school play on Saturday, October 16. We'll meet in the gym at 10am and work until we get it finished. This year we'll be building a pirate ship. Please contact Christy Rivers if you're willing to help. We are also looking for some lumber and building supplies if anyone has extras he or she is willing to donate. To all Veterans And Current Military Personnel The Sonshine Committee would like to gather the names of all the Veterans and current military personnel here at St. John. If you haven t signed up before, we are asking for the following: name, current mailing address, Rank, Branch, and dates of service. Please write this information down and turn into the church office. Thank you. The 7th Grade Class has partnered with the new Gordon s Food Service Store to help raise money for the kid s 2011 trip to Washington D.C. By participating, you will turn your family food purchases into cash for St. John s 7 th grade 2011 D.C. trip fund. Gordon s Food Service Store (GFS) is a commercial foodservice distributor, providing restaurant quality food to consumers, with larger packaging and volume discounting. It is easy to help (and get a $10 coupon when you purchase over $50 of groceries.) You can sign up 3 ways: at the store on your initial visit; by completing an enrollment form and mailing the postcard in or online at Enrollment forms are on the narthex table. The staff at GFS is very helpful and can assist you getting signed up and getting your discount coupon. Anyone can sign up, the more the better for the kids. Enroll friends, family and anyone that wants the benefits of GFS and to assist the kids of St. John s School. Contact Steve with questions. LWML News - Special Project: Please consider coming by on Monday, October 18 th to help LWML with their Lutheran World Relief effort. St. John s LWML will be assisting the school with their Haiti project. It s fun work and goes quick. Refreshments will be served when the projects are complete. It shouldn t take too long and you ll feel great that you helped. LWML s Annual Women s Retreat will be held at Camp CILCA on October 22 & 23. Please call Jan if you plan to attend and/or have any questions. Heidi who has survived cancer will be the Keynote Speaker. LWML members will be riding together, so please sign up. Info is on the Narthex Table. LWML is helping the Food Pantry by having each member/guest bring a donation of food or cash for the food pantry to each meeting (canned vegetables & fruit, canned tuna soups (no creamed soups), peanut butter & jelly, applesauce, jello, pasta & sauce all brought to the white box in the coat room). Cash donations can be made to the St. John Welfare Fund. Cub Scout Pack 113 It s time for the Scout Popcorn Sale. The Scouts will be in the Fellowship Hall in between services today and on October 24 th. Stop by and see the new products and new packaging of the delicious popcorn from Trails End. Order forms are also available in the church and school offices for your convenience.

6 LEARN BY HEART THE FAMILY ALTAR The families of St. John are encouraged to learn these words from the Small Catechism by heart this week: The Ten Commandments The Close of the Commandments What does God say about all these commandments? He says: I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation of those who hate Me, but showing love to a thousand generations of those who love Me and keep My commandments. [Ex. 20:5 6] What does this mean? God threatens to punish all who break these commandments. Therefore, we should fear His wrath and not do anything against them. But He promises grace and every blessing to all who keep these commandments. Therefore, we should also love and trust in Him and gladly do what He commands.
