As I wrote a few weeks ago, but now with more understanding than before, either we will be transformed by our pain or we will transmit that pain to others. Therein is the challenge.

3 FEBRUARY 17, 2019 CHURCH OF THE VISITATION PAGE THREE PASTOR NOTES On Shingles and Saving Grace PARISH EVENTS As many of you know, I have been in a bit of a battle with shingles which covered half my face and entered my eye. This virus which randomly selects a nerve branch causes terrific pain that can last for months. I was blessed that the doctor s caught it just as it began, so I am recuperating quickly, but the pain! And the exhaustion! It can consume one s life, and become all one thinks about. 500 years before the birth of Christ, the Greek poet Aeschylus wrote, And even in our sleep, pain that cannot forget falls drop by drop upon the heart, and in our own despair, against our will, comes wisdom to us by the awful grace of God. I have thought about this quote often throughout my life, especially the meaning of awful grace. That word awful can mean two different things That which inspires fear, is dreadful, terrible. That which is solemnly impressive, inspiring awe. Which is it? I used to think it was the second definition, but as I have aged, I now believe I was wrong. Both are true. And both are true at the same time. So many of you sent me get well cards, prayed for me, and gave me lots and lots of food! I am so grateful to you all for your care. It was more than care. It brought me to my knees, and made me realize how important it is to surrender to God and to others. Can I - can we all - in the midst of our struggle and pain, embrace God s grace that comes to us in so many wonderful and terrible ways, and be transformed and thereby become the bearer of God s grace to others? Classes for students of all abilities are held on Sundays from 9:15am 10:45am at Visitation School. Please visit the Parish Website to complete an application on-line or download an application. For more information, please contact or phone/ text 703/ BAPTISM The Sacrament of Baptism is celebrated on the 4th Saturday of most months at 1pm in the church. Parishioners are invited to call the office to get an appointment for an interview and place in our Baptism class which is held on the Sunday before the baptism in our Parish Center and includes attendance at the 11am Mass. There will be a special pew in the church reserved for these newest members of the parish for the Mass. Please call 310/ with questions. CONFIRMATION AND YOUTH MINISTRY CONFIRMATION and Youth Ministry programs have started. Our Sandwich program also needs some help with sandwich baggies and sliced luncheon meats and cheese.
