OCTOBER 22, 2017 CHURCH OF THE VISITATION PAGE THREE PASTOR NOTES - WHAT BELONGS TO CAESAR? In the gospel today, we hear the famous response of Jesus to the Pharisees trying to trap him.

If Jesus says "pay the taxes," it will turn the common people against Him. It would also turn the zealots who sought to overthrow the Romans against Him.

If they reported something like that with grounds, Jesus would have been immediately arrested.

With Jesus' answer, the Pharisees were confounded by the word image.

" Answer: "You render to God what bears His image, and what bears the image of God is yourself (Gen 1:26, 27)." So, Jesus asks us that same question. How and to what degree do I render myself to God?

3 OCTOBER 22, 2017 CHURCH OF THE VISITATION PAGE THREE PASTOR NOTES - WHAT BELONGS TO CAESAR? In the gospel today, we hear the famous response of Jesus to the Pharisees trying to trap him. Give to Caesar what belongs to Caesar and to God, what belongs to God. But what does this answer mean? The best explanation I have read explains it thus. The Pharisees were trying to trap Him. If Jesus says "pay the taxes," it will turn the common people against Him. It would also turn the zealots who sought to overthrow the Romans against Him. If He said, "don't pay taxes," then the Herodians (agents of the king) have it from His mouth that He is fomenting rebellion. If they reported something like that with grounds, Jesus would have been immediately arrested. On one hand, Jesus is avoiding the question, but on the other He is sidestepping a trap and forcing the Pharisees to acknowledge to real issue in following God. With Jesus' answer, the Pharisees were confounded by the word image. The thinking would go like this: Question: "If you are to render to Caesar what bears his image, then what are you to render to God?" Answer: "You render to God what bears His image, and what bears the image of God is yourself (Gen 1:26, 27)." So, Jesus asks us that same question. How and to what degree do I render myself to God? 4 TWENTY NINTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME SESSIONS OF FAITH Parish Religious Education Program (PREP) is for students in first grade through middle school and includes Sacrament preparation, and Baptism for unbaptized children. Classes are held on Sundays from 9:15 am 10:45 am and began on September 10th. If you would like to get involved in this valuable ministry, please contact Father Tim McGowan at 310/ or Debra Evans at or phone 424/ BAPTISM The Sacrament of Baptism is celebrated on the 4th Saturday of every month at 1pm in the church on most months. November and December are exceptions to this. Parishioners are invited to call the office to get an appointment for an interview and place in our Baptism class which is held on the 3rd Saturday of every month in our Parish Center starting at 9:30am. Call 310/ with questions. RCIA OUR RCIA GROUP will continue to meet on Mondays from 7-9pm. Call 310/ , if you are interested in joining to catch up on your faith, get a sacrament you may have missed out on or just want to have your faith renewed. This Monday s topic will be a Tour of the Church and Who s who in the church. Please join us. All are welcome. The Confirmation and Youth Ministry programs are currently in progress. Our Renew Visitation Campaign is doing quite well and I am so grateful to all who have contributed. Part of our strategy is to contact various foundations both secular and religious, and seek their assistance. To do this we are putting together a grant writing committee. We already have some volunteers who have experience with this. We need others who can assist with making phone calls, mailing letters, doing research and so on. We are looking for a few parishioners who would be able to assist with this very important project. You do not need to have experience in this field to help out, just a willing spirit and a bit of your time. We will be having an initial meeting on Nov 1 7pm in the Parish Center If you are interested, please contact Fr. Jim. HELP! We are in desperate need of additional Church Angels to dust and clean the Church on Thursday or Friday mornings. Any able-bodied person or persons can be trained to help dust the pews and keep the cobwebs from forming. The shifts are once every three months and you work with a team.
