2 Chaplaincy Strategic Plan One Year Update The Mission of the Office of the Chaplaincy at the University of Richmond: Inspiring Generous Faith; Engaging the Heart of the University. Developed five strategic objectives to advance the mission Aligned office resources and hired three new staff members to fulfill the five objectives

3 Chaplaincy Strategic Plan Objective One Create structures of inclusion to support the diversity of faith traditions present at the University of Richmond. Developed a pilgrimage to the Holy Land (May 2011) for Jewish, Christian, and Muslim students The pilgrimage participants will initiate a Multi-faith Student Council at UR in August 2011 Developed an Abrahamic Faiths Clergy Council for faith leaders in the city of Richmond Implemented the Weinstein-Rosenthal Lecture in October, 2010 with Dr. Peter Gomes Will expand the Weinstein-Rosenthal Lecture to become the Weinstein-Rosenthal Forum on Faith, Ethics, and Global Society in 2011 and beyond

5 Chaplaincy Strategic Plan Objective One continued Create structures of inclusion to support the diversity of faith traditions present at the University of Richmond. Elevate visibility of religious holidays: Interfaith Iftar, Interfaith Seder, Interfaith Thanksgiving, and Christmas Candlelight service Working to make Jewish Life at UR more visible and robust Started Kairos, a Tuesday evening worship service in Cannon Chapel, for Christian students Reinvigorated the Muslim student group (Muslim Students Association) Welcomed a 10 hour a week intern in January, 2011 to lead our Muslim students

7 Chaplaincy Strategic Plan Objective Two Work to bring our partner campus ministries more robustly into the mainstream of campus life. Welcomed 3 new campus ministries: Episcopal, Unitarian Universalist, and African Methodist Episcopal Creating new policies to recognize and guide the work of partner campus ministers at UR Working with Enrollment Management and Institutional Research to better identify students of religious practice in order to resource our campus ministries Added creativity and substance to our monthly campus ministry meetings and strengthened orientation activities

9 Chaplaincy Strategic Plan Objective Three Provide opportunities for pastoral care for students, faculty, and staff at UR. Facilitated services for the Malone sisters Offered 2 Blue Christmas services in December Regularly reach out to community members who are going through difficult times Have regular pastoral care sessions with UR students, examining issues such as faith, spirituality, grief, and vocational questions

11 Chaplaincy Strategic Plan Objective Four Develop programming for students and others to pursue spiritual renewal, reflection, and critical engagement with their own experience and that of others. Developed an alternative fall break retreat in the Virginia mountains Will lead a spring break pilgrimage to the Appalachian region of Kentucky to explore issues of faith and social change Provided wellness workshops for University offices and student leaders Offered end of the semester Study Break for the Soul Established Debbie Barkley Spirit Award

12 Chaplaincy Strategic Plan Objective Five Animate conversations of meaning to cultivate our highest ideals of responsible living and learning. Led the annual One Book, One Campus program bringing together community members to read and discuss a common text Secured a grant from the Teagle Foundation to do a workshop for students, faculty, and staff around the role of a Liberal Arts education in helping students answer the Big Questions Developed the Consider This dinner series, beginning in January, 2011 to continue the conversations initiated by the Teagle workshop Will present our experience at a Teagle-funded workshop at Vassar College in March

14 Other areas of growth and collaboration on campus and in the wider city: Taught the Justice and Civil Society course in the Jepson school and plan to teach a First Year Seminar next year Co-chairing the group: Uniting Pastors: Through History and Healing Member of the 2011 Leadership Metro Richmond Class Writing a regular column on Faith and Values for the Richmond Times-Dispatch Installing new state-of-the-art sound system in Cannon Chapel in Spring 2011 Raising the visibility of post-life opportunities through our Columbarium

15 Uniting Pastors: Through History & Healing Uniting Pastors: Through History and Healing is an ecumenical group of Christian pastors coming together across lines of difference to pray, form friendships, and seek God s desires for our churches and the wider city of Richmond in light of the 150 th anniversaries of the end of slavery and the Civil War.
