3 Our Lady of Lourdes Parish Page 3 DIOCESE OF ROCKVILLE CENTRE OFFICE OF THE BISHOP Easter 2018 Dear Friends: Truly the Lord is risen! He is risen indeed! Today we speak these words which echo back to the first days of Christ's resurrection. After walking with Christ on the road to Calvary, we now joyfully go forth as the disciples did on the road to Emmaus with hearts burning within us. We celebrate the moment when Christ conquered death and gave us all hope of new life. Even after nearly 2,000 years, that moment of the Resurrection has not lost any of its power. While myths and stories eventually fade, we celebrate a historical fact, a living Person who left behind lasting evidence of his wonders, evidence that the world still seeks to understand. This is especially true today, as we find ourselves in an historic moment - archeologists have uncovered the site of Jesus' resurrection for the first time in nearly 500 years. Within the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, scholars have restored and conducted research on the tomb of Jesus, also known as the Aedicule. Preliminary findings confirm that the heart of the structure is the same tomb that Roman Christians discovered and venerated as early as 326AD. These findings offer us a great source of confidence in our faith. Scientific progress, rather than finding evidence against what we believe, through missionary archeology has given us a stronger connection with the place of Christ's burial and resurrection. Further, it provides a powerful image as we reflect upon our own spiritual lives this Easter. In its 2,000-year history, Christ's tomb has endured many trials. It was covered over by slabs of stone, it withstood earthquakes, fires and the destruction of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, and many believed it had been lost. So too the life of Christ in our hearts can experience highs and lows - it may be covered over with our worries and concerns, and it may be jeopardized in times of doubt and confusion, or we may even believe it has faded away. Yet just as archeologists have opened up this holy site today, we are called this Easter to open our hearts once again to the power of Christ's love and mercy. We are called to remove the barriers from our hearts and allow Christ's glorified wounds to touch our wounds and the wounds of all humanity. We profoundly experience this reality at the Easter Vigil. In the darkness of the night and in the darkness of our lives, the light of Christ is ignited. Beginning with the Paschal candle, that light is passed on from person to person until the Church is made radiant. The darkness in our hearts is dispelled, and even more beautifully, it is dispelled by the light that is shared by our brothers and sisters in faith. We see in a deeply moving way that Christ's light is spread by each of us who carry him with us. In that moment of unity and love, as the Exsultet proclaims, the Church shakes with joy.

4 Page 4 DIOCESE OF ROCKVILLE CENTRE OFFICE OF THE BISHOP Our Lady of Lourdes Parish The excitement of that evening is not limited to one day, but extends throughout the eight-day Easter Octave. Each day we are given another story of the Risen Christ, another reason to rejoice. We witness the sorrow of the devoted women at the tomb transform into joy, we see the despair of Christ's disciples transform into hope, and we watch the doubt of St. Thomas transform into faith. And on Diving Mercy Sunday, we celebrate the gift of God's mercy that touches the struggles of our own lives and transforms them into opportunities to grow in holiness. On that day we celebrate the true source of joy in the Gospel, the Good News: we are forgiven our sins and are called by God to strive for sanctity. During this joyous season then, we recognize that the Risen Christ's presence, his touch, his personal words of assurance tangibly changed the lives of his followers, as they can change our own lives even today. Though Christ ascended into heaven, we remember that we can still have a personal relationship with him through the gifts of the Holy Spirit and the Church which were given at Pentecost. His presence has never left us. Indeed most powerfully, Christ's presence remains in the Eucharist. While history tells us Christ lived 2,000 years ago, we know he still lives today. He is waiting in our Churches for us to come spend time with him. He is waiting in our tabernacles for us to come adore him. He is waiting for us to join him at the Mass each Sunday, where we can share his suffering, death, and resurrection as if we were by his side those many years ago. We are challenged this Easter to allow Christ to change our lives by his healing touch which gives faith, hope, and love. We commit ourselves to a radical fidelity to Sunday Mass, where Christ can enter our hearts and begin to transform them. And transformed, our hearts will burn within us, driving us all to spread the light of Christ and bring about dramatic missionary growth here in the Diocese of Rockville Centre and beyond.

The theme was to Be Amazed at the heights to which you are called by God. Feedback was enthusiastically positive, with all participants describing the event as a fun experience that they were glad to have attended. As reported by Confirmation Candidate Jack Kirschbaum, the rally opened with music by internationallyknown Catholic worship leader and songwriter Sarah Kroger. Then, Dom Quaglia, who is Sarah s husband and youth ministry partner, spoke about a very interesting skydiving incident in which God gave him the strength and courage to sky dive. He was a very funny and captivating storyteller! The next speaker was a Religious Sister who told the interesting story of the process that steered her life down the path to become a nun. After lunch, there was more music, a talk about wisdom and creativity, and a Mass. In sharing the details of their enjoyable experience, our Confirmation Candidates hope that they have inspired and encouraged more of our parish s youth to participate in future DRVC Youth Rallies and events! ************ Our program couldn t exist without the help of many dedicated volunteers. As this academic year is winding down, we are busy planning for the school year. We are actively recruiting Catechists (religion teachers), on-call substitute teachers, teacher s aides, special education teachers, security, guest speakers for special topics, coordinators of special projects, an attendance monitor, and clerical office helpers.

8 Page 8 Our Lady of Lourdes Parish CUOMO S GIFT TO ABORTION EXTREMISTS Grazie Pozo Christie Gov. Cuomo isn t shy about his proposed budget for 2019, crowing on his Web page that he is Realizing the Promise of Progressive Government. The promise of this particular style of government seems to be to fulfill every liberal dream about abortion in one fell swoop, or at least the dreams that haven t already come true in a state that has the highest rate of abortion in the United States. Across the country, 19 percent of all pregnancies are terminated. In New York City, over one in three babies are aborted, resulting in an astonishing ratio of 505 abortions per 1,000 live births. Even more shocking is the ratio for African-Americans: 1,038 abortions per 1,000 live births meaning more African-American babies are being aborted in the city than are being born. These statistics reflect New York s liberal abortion laws, which provide public funding for abortion and do not require parental notice or consent for minor girls. Cuomo isn t satisfied. He has promised to advance women s equality, which for him, judging by his budget proposal, is synonymous with even more abortion. His so called women s agenda budget bill takes aim at the modest safety regulations enshrined in state law, including the requirement that the procedures be conducted by licensed physicians and the requirement that second-trimester abortions be performed in a hospital setting. How it is in women s best interest to lower the not-very-high safety bar for the elective surgical procedure is anyone s guess. It s also not clear how women will benefit from the elimination of a penal law that makes it a homicide to intentionally cause the death of an unborn child over 24 weeks gestation. The law now adds a felony criminal charge against the perpetrator of a violent attack on a pregnant woman that results in the death of her child. This works to protect women from domestic violence, which has been shown to increase when a woman is pregnant and the father resents the coming child. New York law calls an unborn child killed by violent means in the third trimester a person. The governor s budget bill amends as follows: Person when referring to the victim of a homicide, means a human being who has been born and is alive. This designation of personhood will make no sense to a bereaved mother whose unborn child dies after a violent attack. It certainly didn t to Michelle Wilkins, who was seven months pregnant when she was attacked with a butcher knife by a woman who lured Wilkins into her home by pretending to sell baby clothes. Though her baby died, her attacker wasn t charged with murder thanks to Colorado s laws. Cuomo s budget bill also eliminates legal protection for born children those who have slipped through the abortionist s fingers and inadvertently survived the procedure. In second-trimester abortions, which are often performed after a fetus has reached the stage of viability, a fetus sometimes slips out intact through the birth canal before the abortionist has time to stop their heart with an injection. That baby then takes a breath, ready to fight for his or her life.

9 Page 9 Our Lady of Lourdes Parish State law now gives full legal protection to these children, as setting them aside to die is considered infanticide. If Cuomo s bill passes, a physician trained in fetal resuscitation will no longer be required to assist the untrained abortionist in these complex late-term procedures. The governor s bill explicitly repeals this compassionate measure as part of his Ever Upward Promise to Women. How puzzling. In short, the women s agenda bill appears to be less about women s needs than about pandering to a hardleft base that is committed to expanding late-term abortion all the way through the ninth month of pregnancy a radical position rejected by most Americans. A recent poll found that 76 percent of Americans support limiting abortion to, at most, the first three months of pregnancy. Only extreme abortion-rights ideologues reject humane protections for unborn children who are viable and proven able to feel pain upon being dismembered without anesthesia. Cuomo is siding with a vocal, but very small, segment of the liberal base. A women s agenda should be about women s real needs, not political positioning. If women in New York are resorting to abortion at sky-high rates, maybe what they need is relief from the pressures that drive them to the procedure. Perhaps a women s agenda bill ought to address the high cost of living that makes bringing a child into the world so difficult, the breakdown of the family due to crime and other urban pathologies and the lack of pregnancy-support centers for women who would love to keep their children. Instead, Cuomo wants to make the world a little less safe for women driven to abortion, and a lot less safe for babies, both born and unborn. Dr. Grazie Pozo Christie is a policy adviser for The Catholic Association.

Becerra: The Supreme Court heard oral arguments in the case involving a lawsuit over a California law forcing pregnancy centers to promote abortions. The pregnancy centers don t want to be compelled to advertise abortions. They say the California Reproductive FACT Act violates the free speech clause in the First Amendment. During the arguments, pro-abortion Justice Elena Kagan said the law appeared to be gerrymandered so that it targeted those facilities. She said, If it has been gerrymandered, that s a serious issue. Justice Anthony M. Kennedy, the swing vote on ideologically divisive issues, only asked questions that were hostile to the law and at one point said he thought at least one of the law s requirements was a clear undue burden on the [pregnancy] clinics, according to Bloomberg News. Alliance Defending Freedom President, CEO and General Counsel Michael Farris argued in court on behalf of the pregnancy centers. He stated, I argued that the California law forcing pro-life pregnancy centers to advertise for abortions is unlawful government-compelled expression. A government that tells you what you can t say is dangerous, but a government that tells you what you must say under threat of severe punishment is alarming. The state of California, at the behest of the abortion industry, is using its power to force pro-life pregnancy centers to be complicit in abortion by telling women how to get one free or at a reduced cost. Even worse, AB775 specifically targets these small non-profit organizations that exist to provide women with life-affirming information they may not otherwise receive. Other federal courts have already recognized that this type of government compelled speech violates the foundation of the freedom we have in America, making the 9 th Circuit s denial of free speech the exception rather than the rule. In fact, courts have invalidated or mostly invalidated similar laws in Texas, Maryland, and New York City. When the government decides what people should and should not say, other freedoms are sure to disappear soon after. The government exists to serve its people, and not the other way around. Even if you are not pro-life, do you want the government setting up its own advertising mandates for nonprofit organizations and then punishing any who disagree? The First Amendment does not allow the government to force you to speak its message. That s especially true when you are pursuing a religious mission of simply providing resources and support to women free of charge. California has the heavy burden of justifying its law under the Constitution or else the law must be struck down to give freedom back to the people. The California law forces about 200 pregnancy centers in California to be abortion referral agencies. The Supreme Court will decide whether to reverse the ruling, halt the law, and affirm that forcing the centers to provide the free advertising contrary to their core mission is a violation of their constitutionally protected freedoms. (Steven Ertelt, LifeNews.com, 3/20/18) BUILDING STRONG BONES AND JOINTS: A new study published in the journal Development, reports that scientists at Trinity College Dublin, found that movement by chick and mouse embryos helped to build strong bones and joints. So, all that kicking that keeps moms up at night is beneficial!
