Baptismal preparation classes are offered on the 2nd Sunday of the month. Parents are encouraged to attend the 10:30 AM mass on the 2nd Sunday and the preparation class will follow the mass in the Rectory. All couples seeking to baptize a child must attend the class. Baptisms are preformed on the 2nd and 4th Sunday of every month at 2PM. Marriages The prospective bride and groom should discuss details of the marriage with one of the priests of the parish at least six months prior to the date of the wedding. Each year the Roman Rite of the Catholic Church celebrates 40 days of prayer and fasting before the great celebration of Easter. This number is very symbolic and has deep ties to multiple biblical events. Purification and renewal The first mention of 40 occurs in the book of Genesis. God proclaims to Noah, For in seven days I will send rain upon the earth forty days and forty nights; and every living thing that I have made I will blot out from the face of the ground (Genesis 7:4). This event connects the number 40 to purification and renewal, a time when the earth was washed clean and made anew. Recognizing our sinfulness In Numbers we see the number 40 again, this time as a type of penance and punishment imposed on the people of Israel for disobeying God. They had to wander in the desert for 40 years so that a new generation could inherit the Promised Land, instead of the people who did not trust in God s plan for them. Repentance and conversion of heart In the book of Jonah, the prophet proclaims to Nineveh, Yet forty days, and Nineveh shall be overthrown! And the people of Nineveh believed God; they proclaimed a fast, and put on sackcloth, from the greatest of them to the least of them (Jonah 3:4). This again ties the number to spiritual renewal and conversion of heart. A time of prayer and preparation The prophet Elijah, before he encountered God on Mount Horeb, traveled for forty days, And he arose, and ate and drank, and went in the strength of that food forty days and forty nights to Horeb the mount of God (1 Kings 19:8). This connects 40 to a time of spiritual preparation, a time when the soul is led to a place where it can hear the voice of God. Engaging in a spiritual battle Before embarking on his own public ministry, Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. And he fasted forty days and forty nights (Matthew 4:1-2). In continuity with the past, Jesus sets out to pray and fast for 40 days, combating temptation and preparing himself for proclaiming the Gospel to others. In the end, all of these episodes in the Gospel reveal different reasons why the number 40 was selected for the season of Lent. Together they provide for us a spiritual guide for Lent, inviting us to open our hearts to God.

Do not bring books or any other personal items. Wednesday, March 14 and Saturday, March 17: Final Exam for all Level 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8 students. Study guides were distributed to the students in class. Extra copies are available in the office. Monday, March 26: Level 8 and RCIA: Confirmation Rehearsal/Practice at 7pm in the church. Mandatory for candidates and sponsors. Calendar update: The Mandatory Level 8 Confession listed on the calendar for Thursday March 22 was rescheduled. It was held on January 31 during class time. Parent Faith Formation Evenings: Father Tony s Theology Classes Wednesdays, March 7 & 21, April 4 & 18, May 9 & 23-7:30pm to 9pm in the Church Basement. ************ In celebration of the February 11 th feast day of the patroness of our parish, Our Lady of Lourdes, Level 1 and Level 2 students were shown the film Saint Bernadette, The Princess of Lourdes. Catechist Miss Sue Bouffier shared photographs and stories from her pilgrimage to Lourdes. Our older students were given a prayer card with the story of Saint Bernadette, a Saint Bernadette medal, and information for praying the Novena to Our Lady of Lourdes. Holy water from Lourdes was available for all students to bless themselves. ************ February 14 was Ash Wednesday. Father Tony Heinlein distributed ashes to all the students who were in attendance that day, and to the teachers and parents who were present. Suggestions for Lenten Sacrifices that emphasized doing something positive for the good of others in addition to the usual fasting sacrifices were provided to the students. Our First Communion candidates were given a Lenten Sacrificial Offering Holder to collect coins for donation to our Parish Outreach program. ************ To acknowledge the feast day of Saint Valentine, students in the upper levels of our program were given a brief biography of Saint Valentine and a Prayer Card with the Saint Valentine Novena along with instructions on how to pray the novena.

Since our group began in November 2009, the completed blanket count stands at 2,827. I m sure in no time at all we will be adding to this amazing number. Thank you to our lovely group of ladies for all the good work you do to bring love and comfort to many children undergoing cancer care. Outreach is happy to accept donations of yarns, crochet hooks or knitting needles in support of this effort. If you are interested in joining our group please contact Parish Outreach at Paper Goods Ministry of Consolation Our parish is richly blessed to have gathered a wonderful group of volunteers who make up Our Lady of Lourdes Ministry of Consolation team. The most valuable gifts we can give are those that come from the heart. The precious gifts of our time, love and compassion are especially needed during the time of the loss of a loved one. Created to provide warmth, caring and personal attention to assist families in preparation for the funeral mass, this particular ministry can never have too many helping hands. Whether your interest be that of a Greeter, Lector or EM, please give some thought as to sharing your time and talents and being a part of this ministry s call to love and care for one another. Senator Hannon s Long Island Office number is For more information, visit the NYS Catholic Conference website: FREE SPEECH: A pro-life crisis pregnancy center in NYC, EMC Frontline Pregnancy Center, was fined $1500 under Local Law 17 by the NYC Dept of Consumer Affairs, the first CPC it has fined. The law requires EMC to inform all customers they re not a licensed medical provider, and don t do abortions. The United States Supreme Court will hear a pro-life challenge against a California law that forces pro-life centers, such as pregnancy medical clinics, to advertise abortion. Pro-life advocates who have opposed the law, including The National Institute of Family and Life Advocates (NIFLA), praised the Supreme Court for deciding to hear what it called a critical free speech case. FBI/PLANNED PARENTHOOD: The FBI has requested unredacted documents from Congress that were obtained during the 2015 hearings on Planned Parenthood s allegedly illegal trafficking of aborted baby body parts for profit, according to The Hill. Pro-life activists have welcomed the move as a first sign of a criminal probe into the abortion giant. The Hill reported that the request was made in recent days, sources said, to the Senate Judiciary Committee, whose chairman, Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa), last December referred Planned Parenthood and several other abortion providers to the FBI for investigation after a lengthy probe into the transfers of fetal tissue. PLANNED PARENTHOOD S POLITICAL AGENDA: Planned Parenthood recently rolled out its political agenda for 2018 and hosted a call with reporters to highlight its pro-abortion agenda. Their leaders plan to push pro-abortion initiatives in all 50 states. They support the proposed California requirement that all public colleges provide abortion drugs to students on campus. Dawn Laguens, vice president of Planned Parenthood said their goal is more abortions. She implied that women will not be able to achieve their dreams unless they can freely and easily abort their unborn babies. PP is pushing for passage of a bill in Maine that would require all nurse practitioners to provide the abortion pill to patients upon request. PP is also pushing to repeal Missouri s 72-hour waiting period for abortions. PP also announced plans to open 10 new locations for webcam abortions. Women who have a webcam or telemed abortion do not see a doctor face-to-face. They chat with a doctor through a computer before a nurse or remote-controlled drawer dispenses the abortion drugs. There is no physical exam. PP did not reveal the location of these sites saying they fear pro-life lawmakers will try to stop them before they even start.
