2 Our Lady of Lourdes Page 3 Dear Friends, CONFESSION IS ALWAYS a revealing time. It's a special privilege to share in the journey of human souls. Sometimes a priest is deeply humbled by the depth of feeling expressed by the person who comes in to confess. And then there are kids' confessions! They tend to be both delightful and predictable. The sins of children seem to fall into one of two major categories. They either lie to their parents or fight with their brothers and sisters. The lies are usually the kind that get us out of trouble. The fights usually have no real motive. They begin over something small and are forgotten pretty quickly. Probably everyone of us who has brothers or sisters has had a number of tense moments. We're companions, housemates, rivals, competitors, friends and enemies. We love each other because we're related. But sometimes we don't even like each other. We often enough come from the same parents, but couldn't be more different. We're raised with similar values and yet, frequently end up embracing very different ideals. God gifts us in deeply different ways. Some are better looking than their siblings. Others are smarter. Others are kinder. And others have more friends. Older brothers and sisters tend to think they had it rougher than the younger kids. And probably that's true. The older guys and gals are watched more closely. Parents are new at all this and want to be sure of doing it right. They become a little more relaxed with later children. All of which brings me to the story of one brother and sister who recently helped to put it all in perspective. Peggy Say is the older sister of a man named Terry Anderson. And like most siblings, they didn't always get along. They'd bicker and be sarcastic with each other. They'd second guess each other often. And their life choices were frequently at odds. They grew into adulthood, not unlike many other sisters and brothers, taking each other pretty much for granted. Then life changed this haphazard relationship and brought into sharper focus the importance of one for the other. On March 16, 1985, Terry Anderson, working as a journalist in Beirut, was kidnapped by Islamic terrorists. His imprisonment and torture lasted longer than any other American hostage. He was released after six long years of captivity. Throughout those awful years Peggy Say had a chance to think and pray about her missing brother. She got to examine her real feelings about someone she had always expected to be there. She was given the time to wonder about the meaning of being someone's sister. And she came to recognize that having a brother or sister is a special grace. Peggy Say might well have sat in paralyzed silence, hopeful that the government would somehow free her brother Terry. But Peggy chose a different way to love. She got involved. She wrote letters. She visited tons of politicians. She worked up petition drives. She hounded ambassadors and presidents. She fought like a tiger for her kid brother. She simply never gave up, because she knew that her brother w as w orth it. If T e rry Anderson was a captive for over six years, so was his sister Peggy. She was captivated by the realization of the meaning of true love. Others might have despaired. During Terry's time of imprisonment, both his father and brother passed away. But even these heartbreaks could not dissuade Peggy Say. If anything, their deaths reminded her that she had a living brother waiting to be rescued. And that knowledge gave her unrelenting determination. After six years of separation, Peggy Say and Terry Anderson were reunited. And Anderson admits that his faith in God and the knowledge that people like his sister Peggy were battling for his release always gave him hope. The passion Peggy has for her brother is a powerful witness of the reality of love. But, in truth, it shouldn't take a devastation like kidnapping to learn the real value of a brother and sister. They are truly gifts from God. Not, without their failings, just like us. They should be loved and appreciated today. In the Love of Christ, Msgr. Jim Lisante Pastor

4 Our Lady of Lourdes Page 5 Our Lady of Lourdes Memorial Garden Phase II Spring 2014 Once again, we would like to thank all who have helped support our Memorial Garden Grotto Project Phase I. We are very pleased with the workmanship and outcome of the memorial bricks and benches. As spring 2014 approaches, we will now begin Phase II of the Memorial Garden Grotto Restoration. We are now offering another opportunity to purchase memorial bricks, for anyone who hasn t had a chance to do so. (Please refer to the attached Reservation Form ) As a reminder, memorial text can contain a message of remembrance for our deceased loved ones, but can also pave our Living Walkway, marking moments such as; Births, Baptisms, Birthdays, Weddings, Graduations, Holy Orders, Anniversaries etc. In addition to the bricks, we are also replacing the top of the altar in the Memorial Garden with a stunning new, black granite piece deserving of its sacred purpose. The four sides of the altar top will be engraved in gold lettering to match the benches, one of which, (front) is already spoken for. There is an opportunity to purchase one of the remaining three sides of the grotto altar. Please call the rectory if you re interested in dedicating or memorializing these special sites. Please watch for the many upcoming changes, as we restore this beautiful garden dedicated to Our Blessed Mother and Bernadette. We will keep you informed in the bulletin of the different opportunities to care and share in memorializing and restoring items in the Grotto. If you have any questions, please contact the rectory Thank you for your continued support. God Bless!

7 Page 8 Our Lady of Lourdes "We must stand up for the rights of our neighbor who is suffering from injustice; we must defend them all the more vigorously because we see Jesus present in them. Surely this is our duty because of our love for others for His sake. We have no right to be 'sleeping watchmen' or dumb watch-dogs. Whenever we see evil we must sound the alarm." Blessed Charles de Foucauld Last week, the United Nations Committee on the Rights of the Child issued a report attacking the Church for her teachings on contraception, abortion, and homosexuality. Austin Ruse, president of the Catholic Family and Human Rights Institute (C-FAM) states, "Starting at the Cairo Conference in 1994, the Church has been able to block an international right to abortion...the Holy See has consistently handed the Catholics for Choice, the Norwegians, the United Nations Population Fund...defeat after defeat." Sheila Liaugminas writes at that this report was likely payback. "Despite its non-voting status at the United Nations, the Holy See has stood as the major barrier to the UN goal of universal access to abortion and contraception for young girls and women throughout the world. While the Church was unable to convince all nations - including the United States - of the evils of abortion, the Vatican, as a sovereign state, continues to play an important role at the negotiating table in areas in which the Church has a stake in helping to ensure the right to life and the dignity of the person. The UN has attempted to end that influence." Sr. Mary Ann Walsh responded, "The Committee on the Rights of the Child is correct to voice concern over sexual abuse and is to be commended for its efforts. It would have credibility, however, if it also worked to protect the most basic right of a child: the right to live. Would that it made headlines because of concern for minors being trafficked in the world's sex trade and children dying from starvation and dysentery from impure water. When the UN committee strays into the culture wars to promote abortion, contraceptives and gay marriage, it undermines its noble cause and trades concern for children to concern for organizations with other agendas...the committee no doubt expected the negative reaction of the Vatican to last week's report. But it may have been surprised that so many in the elite media objected too. The Economist criticized the report for being sloppy and taking positions on issues where consensus is lacking. The Atlantic's Emma Green complained that the report inappropriately critiqued deeply-held religious beliefs. And the Boston Globe's John Allen argued that the report would only confirm the opinion of skeptics that the UN is motivated by politics and secular ideology." Sheila Liaugminas concludes, "One...can only hope that perhaps there will be no victory at all for the aggressors against the greatest defender of human dignity and human rights around the world."
