3 First Reading: Genesis 15:5-12, God told Abram that he would give him the land of Egypt and his descendants would become a great people. Abram then made sacrifices to God, cutting them in half. A torch passed between the pieces, as a visible sign to Abram of God's promise. Second Reading: Philippians 3:17 4:1 Paul urges the Philippians to avoid becoming too interested in material possessions. He reminds them that their most important wealth is their faith in Jesus, which will lead them to eternal life. Gospel: Luke 9:28b-36 FEBRUARY 21, SECOND SUNDAY OF LENT Jesus took Peter, John and James to a mountain to pray. When his clothes grew incredibly white, Moses and Elijah appeared. They spoke of the scripture he was to fulfill. Then a cloud came down and a voice said, "This is my Son, my Chosen One. Listen to him." William J. Reilly Second Sunday of Lent February 21, 2016 As you well know, we have our citizenship in heaven; it is from there we eagerly await the coming of our savior, the Lord Jesus Christ. He will give a new form to this lowly body of ours and remake it according to the pattern of his glorified body, by his power to subject everything to himself. For these reasons, my brothers, you whom I love and long for, you who are my joy and my crown, continue, my dear ones, to stand firm in the Lord. We ascend the mount, with Jesus and the apostles to pray. The words of Paul, can be considered the prayer of Jesus directed to us as we live lent. Through God s grace we are reformed in His image. Through His example there is a makeover taking place in us. Lent is both a challenge and opportunity to let the Lord rework us according to His plan not ours. We find the pattern, the model, in the person of Christ. He spent time in prayer. He taught three chosen apostles. The voice told the disciples that He is the chosen, favored one, and we are to listen to Him. Seek some quiet time, a special place, to reflect on your encounter with Christ, as you begin this second week of Lent. May we too say, Master, how good it is for us to be here.

Please feel free to call the rectory to add names of immediate family members at any time. Taking the Spiritual Works of Mercy To Heart: What are they and why do they matter so much? Sidney Callahan Ph.D. is the author of With All Our Heart and Mind: The Spiritual Works of Mercy in a Psychological Age, A Christopher Award book. She is a long time parishioner and former Professor at Mercy College who has written and lectured widely. The talk will be held on March 3 in the rectory. (616 Warburton Avenue, Hastings On Hudson). In his encyclical on the care of creation, Pope Francis tells us that human beings, even Christians like us, are turning our common home into a pile of filth. We can help to atone for this destruction by always taking reusable bags with us to the grocery store, not buying water in plastic bottles, never again throwing littler onto the ground and thinking of new ways to reduce, reuse, and recycle. FEEDING OUR NEIGHBORS - FINAL WEEKEND Because of the recent Blizzard & Freezing Cold Temperatures, our food drive for the Cardinals Feeding Our Neighbors campaign was not very successful. Therefore, we will be extending our food collection for one more week. Food items needed are: Pasta, Pasta Sauce, Tuna, Peanut Butter, Jelly, Cereal, Powdered Milk, Juice, Macaroni & Cheese, Canned Vegetables, Fruits & Stews. Rice, Beans, Oatmeal, Stuffing Mix, Boxed Mashed Potatoes. Food items can be dropped in the boxes in the rear of the Churches. If you have any questions, please contact the rectory. As stewards and Disciples of Christ, we recognize that all the goods and riches in our life are gifts from God. Strengthened by the Eucharist, we respond to God s generosity in our lives with gratitude by using and sharing our gifts in service of others.
