Baptismal preparation classes are offered on the 2nd Sunday of the month. Parents are encouraged to attend the 10:30 AM mass on the 2nd Sunday and the preparation class will follow the mass in the Rectory. All couples seeking to baptize a child must attend the class. Baptisms are preformed on the 2nd and 4th Sunday of every month at 2PM. Please call the Rectory to schedule an appointment at (516) Confessions Saturdays, Eves of Holy Days and Eves of First Fridays 4:00 to 5:00pm. Marriages The prospective bride and groom should discuss details of the marriage with one of the priests of the parish at least six months prior to the date of the wedding. If you wish, you may share in this holy season with a poinsettia plant or another memorial of your choice for someone you love. Simply print your name and the name of your loved one on an envelope or use the Christmas Memorial envelopes found in the Church lobby or rectory. For the poinsettia plants insert your donation as listed below and return it to the Rectory or place it in the collection basket. All other memorials must be obtained at the Rectory due to the limited quantities. The deadline is December 17th. All names will be published in our Sunday/Christmas bulletin on December 24th ( Anything received after the deadline will be published the following week.) 7 Page 7 Our Lady of Lourdes Parish Christmas 2017 To the People of God of the Diocese of Rockville Centre: Merry Christmas to you and your families! As we celebrate the Prince of Peace's entrance into world history, we give thanks to Father, Son and Holy Spirit for the Mission of Mercy of our Holy Catholic Church. We give thanks for our families, our domestic churches, which transform the world and history with Christ's Love and the Church's missionary spirit This past month we dedicated the Gianna Center of Long Island for Women's Health and Fertility, which in its mission unites the Splendor of Truth of Catholic Moral Teaching on Marriage and the Family with ethical reproductive science through the use of NaPro Technology and the Creighton Model Fertility Care System. This was an important moment for the Catholic Church and Catholic Health Services in its service to the common good of Long Island. The dedication of the Gianna Center gives a living expression of celebration to some important 2018 Church anniversaries. On July 28, 2018, we will celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Blessed Pope Paul VI's 1968 encyclical Humanae Vitae. Blessed Paul VI was prophetic as he courageously taught that all marital intimacy celebrates both the love-giving and life-giving dimensions of married love that cannot be separated. The Holy Father predicted accurately the dire consequences for society of separating the lovegiving and life-giving dimensions of married love. He was widely criticized, even ridiculed at the time, but as we know from the Old Testament that is exactly what happens to prophets who stand up for liberating truths. Blessed John Henry Cardinal Newman once said: "The Catholic Church is not behind the times. It is beyond the times." And as the renowned particle physicist Professor Stephen Barr emphasizes, in the history of the world, the Catholic Church is the greatest friend and supporter of ethical scientific development. The Gianna Center is an expression of this friendship, support and partnership in history.

8 Page 8 Our Lady of Lourdes Parish On August 4, 2018, we will also celebrate the 25th Anniversary of St. John Paul II's great encyclical The Splendor of Truth, which shows that moral choices and decisions that are grounded in objective truth transform and illumine the lives of individuals and society. The Gianna Center is a powerful part of that dedication to truth, charity and mercy and during this Christmas 2017, we ask the Christ Child to lead all those involved in the mission of the Gianna Center and all who are served by that mission. The Center's patroness, St. Gianna Beretta Molla ( ) was a wife, a mother and a physician dedicated to the progress of medical science. Her image is prominent at the main altar of St. Agnes Cathedral where I will celebrate Christmas Midnight Mass. I will pray that her intercession and her courageous and holy example may inspire each one of us and our family members this Christmas season and be yet another catalyst of dramatic missionary growth on Long Island.

We will reopen Tuesday, January 2. There will be NO classes on Wednesdays December 20 and 27, or Saturdays December 23 and 30. Classes resume Wednesday, January 3. Parents: Please remember to check your child s book every week for important, time-sensitive announcements that are sent home! Students and families should meet in the church at the reserved section on the right side at 10:15am. Students must sign in. They will resume on Wednesdays, March 7 & 21, April 4 & 18, May 9 & 23-7:30pm to 9pm in the Church Basement. ************ On Wednesday November 29, our Level 7 and Level 8 students were led by Mrs. Margie Corradina in an Advent Prayer Service in our auditorium. With the assistance of Mr. Jonak and Mrs. Schaeffer, the students were guided through meditative prayer as each candle was lit. Prayers to our Blessed Mother were also offered. The students were involved in reading the prayers and leading the songs. It is our prayer that they gather deeper meaning of the Advent and Christmas season and continue to grow in their personal relationship with God as they proceed on their journey towards receiving the Sacrament of Confirmation. Our program is in immediate need of an RCIC teacher to work with a small group of older children who have not been previously catechized. These students need to catch up with their peers in the faith formation process, and need to prepare for the Sacraments of Reconciliation and Eucharist.

The medical and clinical staff at Talbot House will assess the kind of care the person needs, to begin his/her journey in recovery. So please take a look through your closets and consider donating those unwanted/ unnecessary coats and jackets that are still in very good condition. We will of course provide a tax deductible receipt for the value of your donated winter coats, if needed. Christmas Giving Tree As we look forward to the Christmas season, the Christmas Giving Tree will again be displayed in the entrance of the Church as of the weekend of November 25 & 26, until Sunday, Dec.17h for your consideration. Please consider taking an ornament and purchasing the suggested gift card in an amount of your choosing. We will begin distribution of the Giving Tree Gift Cards the week of Dec. 11th, to allow our neighbors in need time to shop for their families. 18 Page 18 Our Lady of Lourdes Parish PRO LIFE NEWS Laws are not necessarily embodiment of a moral code. Indeed, it is possible that some laws undermine, rather than enrich, the human family. Members of a pluralistic society [must] face the challenging fact that what is clearly legal is not automatically clearly moral. If we need evidence of this, we only need to think of laws that have supported slavery, the subordination of women, disenfranchising of Native Americans, the suppression of innocent human life in the womb or in situations of terminal illness, and various forms of ethnic, racial, and religious prejudice. Even when such policies were or are legal, they were still immoral. (Cardinal Hickey, address to the Red Mass, Wash DC, 1980) MARCH FOR LIFE 2018 The March for Life in Washington, DC will be held on Friday, January 19, The Rally will take place at noon at 12 th Street on the National Mall, between Madison Drive and Jefferson Drive. The March begins on Constitution between 12 th and 14 th Streets at approximately 1pm and ends in front of the Supreme Court. For information regarding buses going to the March from Nassau and Suffolk, call the Long Island Coalition for Life at between the hours of 10am and 7pm to locate the nearest bus in your area. For info: THE AFRICAN FAMILY AND CULTURAL COLONIZATION : Archbishop Thomas Msusa of Malawi spoke at the World Congress of Families stating, We believe that life begins at conception; sacredness and sanctity of human life; both the mother and unborn child have the right to life and that all instances of direct abortions are a violation of the rights of the unborn because it is a willful killing of innocent life We note in particular that there are some worrisome trends in our democratization and emancipation that push for a worldview independent of and side-lining God, and making human beings dependent on their own intellect, determining for themselves what is right and what is wrong. We are saddened to read that religion should not regulate morals. Joseph Meaney, of Human Life International stated, A media-heavy campaign has been waged to promote the view that there are many deaths due to illegal abortions and the only way to prevent women dying is to liberalize the abortion law. Meaney said that Malawi, located in southeast Africa with a population of 18 million with a per capita GDP of only $330, has likely been targeted by foreign government funding agencies and some international NGOs to change its abortion law in part due to its extreme poverty and high birth rate. Malawi lawmakers are currently considering a bill to allow abortions in cases of rape, fetal anomalies, and threats to the mother s physical or mental health. However, this legislation is strongly opposed by many of its citizens. Pro-life activists have accused the government of being disingenuous in its promotion of the legislation. Abortion activists claim that the legalization of abortion will keep women from seeking dangerous back-alley or do-it-yourself abortions. However, reports indicate that it is the abortion activists themselves who are providing women with these unsafe, illegal abortions. Malawi has been a constant target of international abortion activists and population control groups. For years the Malawi government, as with many African governments, has been told by Western allies to reduce their population by promoting contraceptives and abortion rights. Unfortunately, the more people adopt this anti-life mindset, the more they share in the problems of the West, including infertility, which is increasing among many reproductive age women.
