Baptismal preparation classes are offered on the 2nd Sunday of the month. Parents are encouraged to attend the 10:30 AM mass on the 2nd Sunday and the preparation class will follow the mass in the Rectory. All couples seeking to baptize a child must attend the class. Baptisms are preformed on the 2nd and 4th Sunday of every month at 2PM. Marriages The prospective bride and groom should discuss details of the marriage with one of the priests of the parish at least six months prior to the date of the wedding. Cuomo Dear Governor Cuomo, Although in your recent State of the State address you cited your Catholic faith and said we should stand with Pope Francis, your advocacy of extreme abortion legislation is completely contrary to the teachings of our pope and our Church. Once truth is separated from fiction and people come to realize the impact of the bill, they will be shocked to their core. By that time, however, it may be too late to save the countless lives that will be lost or spare countless women lifelong regret. The so-called Reproductive Health Act (RHA) will expand abortion under the pretenses of choice and progress, which, in fact, it will do little to enhance. At the same time, this legislation threatens to rupture the communion between the Catholic faith and those who support the RHA even while professing to follow the Church, something that troubles me greatly as a pastor. Contrary to what its proponents say, the RHA goes far beyond Roe vs. Wade in its aggressive extremism. Granting non-doctors permission to perform abortions does nothing to advance the security and health of women. Condoning coerced or involuntary abortions by repealing criminal sanctions even in cases where a perpetrator seeks to make his partner un-pregnant through an act of physical violence does not represent any kind of progress in the choice, safety or health of women. Removing protection for an infant accidentally born alive during an abortion is abject cruelty, something most people of conscience would deem inhumane for even a dog or cat. Finally, allowing late-term abortions is nothing less than a license to kill a pre-born child at will. It is very difficult to understand how you can align yourself with Pope Francis and so vehemently advocate such profoundly destructive legislation. I find myself wondering how it can be viewed as progress to have gone from a society working to make abortion rare to one that urges women to shout your abortion as some advocates of this bill boldly announce. How is it progress to ignore the harm that this will do, not only to innocent infants, born and unborn, but to their mothers? Does the heartache of so many New York women who have been pained by their abortion decisions matter? Is anyone listening to them? How is it really pro-choice when a law, which claims to guarantee choice, moves to expand only one option for women? If abortion is deemed a fundamental right in New York State, will the State then still be able to issue licenses to pro-life nurses or physicians? Will health facilities which do not provide abortions be certified? Will the law allow that even one dollar be given to maternity services without offering women the choice of abortion? These are unanswered questions, but I shudder to think of the consequences this law will wreak. You have already uttered harsh threats about the welcome you think pro-lifers are not entitled to in our state. Now you are demonstrating that you mean to write your warning into law. Will being pro-life one day be a hate crime in the State of New York? Our young people especially, who have seen their sonograms and who follow the discoveries the sciences have made, know the lies and the despair that proponents of such dangerous and death-dealing legislation are promulgating, even if blindly or unwittingly. Giving up on life is no excuse for us as a responsible and compassionate people. In so doing, we evade the challenge of accompanying women and the families they are trying to nurture on the long journey. They deserve our courageous and ongoing support in creating conditions under which they will be free to bear and provide for their children. As a society, we can and must do better. The teaching and intuition of our common faith readies us to help. It is an essential part of our mission to support the lives of all, especially the voiceless, the most vulnerable and marginalized, as Pope Francis always reminds us to do. Let s not bequeath to our children a culture of death, but together build a more humane society for the lives of all of our fellow citizens. Mr. Cuomo, do not build this Death Star. Top of Form Father Kevin Thompson met with the parents of our First Communion Candidates this week. He reflected that as parents, they love their children completely, and taking care of their family s needs are a priority. God loves each of us in the same complete and unconditional way. He wants each of us to come together as His family. In Holy Communion, we are invited to join with God. The Eucharist is not just blessed bread; it is God himself. As we take Him into ourselves, God also takes us into Himself, and we become one with Him. As such, we are also joined together with each other because we are each in communion with God. Father Kevin encouraged parents to show their children that God is important in their busy lives. Home is the first church, and children learn by watching their parents. It s up to parents to teach their children that God is alive in the world, and to help their children understand that the Eucharist is a powerful and glorious gift from Him. Just as parents introduced their children to their grandparents so they can be loved and spoiled by them, parents need to introduce their children to God by bringing them to Mass, by praying with them, and by following God s teachings in their daily lives. With all the churches in the area offering a variety of Mass times each weekend, everyone can find a way to go to Church even though they have other activities scheduled. Parents were asked to imagine that they prepared a wonderful family meal, and then everyone was too busy to attend and said, No thanks.see ya! and then disappeared (until they needed something). Think of how much it means to God when we make the time for Him and for Mass especially when it is challenging to do so.

We Care Blankets As our wonderful group of Care Blanket volunteers continue to meet on Wednesday mornings from 10:00-11:30am at Parish Outreach, the gifts of their love, time and talent in crocheting and knitting beautiful blankets for seriously ill children is nothing less than a beautiful thing! Since our group began in November 2009, the completed blanket count as of January 16 stands at 3,436. I m sure in no time at all we will be adding to this amazing number. Thank you to our lovely group of ladies for all the good work you do to bring love and comfort to many children undergoing cancer care. Outreach is happy to accept donations of crochet hooks, and is especially in need of acrylic yarns in support of this effort. At the center of our pilgrimage is our visit to Lourdes, where the Blessed Mother appeared to a young girl, Bernadette Soubirous at Massabielle. But we will also visit the Carmelite Monastery of St. Therese, the Little Flower. We will celebrate Mass at the Basilica at Lisieux. We will make our way to Paris, where we will see the sights associated with the City of Lights. In addition, we will visit Notre Dame, Sacre-Coeur Basilica on top of Montmartre Hill. It is indeed a spiritual adventure and well food for the soul.

14 Page 14 Our Lady of Lourdes Parish FEBRUARY 3, 2019 PRO LIFE NEWS REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH ACT: On January 22 nd, the 46 th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, the NYS Legislature passed, and Governor Cuomo signed, the Reproductive Health Act. This bill allows pre-born children to be aborted for basically any reason up to birth. This legislation goes beyond Roe v. Wade, allowing abortions even when the Supreme Court has said states may regulate them. Late-term abortions, which had been illegal, are now legal. Non-doctors are permitted to perform them. The bill appears to restrict late-term abortions but contains a broad health exception for abortions after 24 weeks. NYS Right to Life stated that this exception allows women to abort preborn children up to nine months of pregnancy for age, economic, social and emotional factors, rather than the biological definition of health that normally comes to mind. The bill redefines a person as a human being who has been born and is alive, and describes abortion as a fundamental right. NYSRTL also noted that by removing protections from illegal abortions, the bill will open the door for abuses. Back alley abortionists, abusive partners or parents and others will no longer face charges for illegally killing a preborn baby even if the mother wanted her child. Catholic News Service reported that in December a man was charged with abortion in the second degree for punching a woman who was 26 weeks pregnant in the stomach in order to cause a miscarriage. Under the RHA, the attacker would not be charged with a felony. Protections for babies born alive after a failed abortion will also end. In addition, the bill says the state cannot deny, regulate or restrict abortion, even for parental consent/notification for minors, informed consent or limits on taxpayer-funded abortions. NYSRTL predicts that this bill will also lead to the suppression of pro-lifer s freedom of speech and conscience. Doctors and nurses who refuse to help abort preborn babies could lose their jobs, and pro-life advocates could be persecuted for just speaking for life. In 2016, 82,189 babies were aborted in NYS. About half of these were tax-payer funded. Over 1700 of these babies were at least 20 weeks. OB/GYN Doctor Omar Hamada noted that the bill actually moves all the protections for the fetus by removing any homicidal protection. So, before, the New York Penal Code basically stated that, after 24 weeks, if a baby was killed, there was a risk of the perpetrator being charged with a homicide. That has been removed It allows for any health care practitionary that s licensed or authorized to perform an abortion, so it doesn t have to be a physician. And it removes all restrictions at all for any type of abortion at any time for any reason There s not a single fetal or maternal condition that requires third-trimester abortion. Not one. Delivery, yes. Abortion. No. He explained that complications may require a premature delivery, but not an abortion. He called the cheering that erupted as Cuomo signed the bill a travesty and unconscionable. Archbishop Timothy Cardinal Dolan criticized the governor for bragging about this gruesome law. He stated, Do not brag about making the state of New York the abortion capital of the world. That is not an enlightened progressive posture We have a governor that uses his dissent from church teachings as applause lines We have a governor that takes quotes from Pope Francis out of context to draw lines between the bishops of New York and the Holy Father himself. After the Senate vote, a voice cried out, May almighty God have mercy on this state! Rabbi Steven Pruzansky a leader of the Coalition for Jewish Values stated, Under the guise of progressivism, NY is taking us back to a primitive age when infanticide was also accepted and the fact that these progressives want to take up euthanasia next should surprise no one. (NY lawmakers are considering a bill to legalize assisted suicide this winter.) ROSARY AND ADORATION FOR LIFE: Please consider spending time before the Blessed Sacrament to pray the Rosary for the conversion of hearts and minds so that all might have reverence and respect for the God-given gift of life, from the moment of conception until natural death. Please pray for an end to violence in all its forms. SPIRITUAL ADOPTION: Make a personal commitment to pray daily for one unborn child who is in danger of being aborted. You are asked to spiritually adopt one unknown baby and pray that this child be carried to term and experience the fullness of life as God intended.
