3 Page 3 Our Lady of Lourdes May 1, 2016 Dear Friends: As I've mentioned before, On May 7th and 8th, we'll be celebrating two special Masses for Catholics who have not been to our church in a while, a kind of 'welcome home' experience. It will happen at the 5 p.m, Mass on Saturday, May 7th and the 10:30 a.m. Mass on Sunday, May 8th. The choir will sing at both liturgies, copies of two great books by Matthew Kelly will be distributed (one is called Rediscovering Catholicism, the other Rediscovering Jesus Christ). A newly printed prayer card will also be distributed. It's image is a copy of the new painting of Our Lady of Lourdes and St. Bernadette now hanging over the main altar of our church. And I'll be gearing the homily at both Masses to the importance of active practice of the faith and making clear that all Catholics are always welcome in our collective spiritual home. But I need your help to make the Masses effective. You know family members, neighbors, co-workers and friends who live apart from the Church. I ask you to invite them to join us for Mass that weekend. That weekend we also observe the celebration of Mother's Day on Sunday. So Moms, think of inviting your children to accompany you to Mass. Tell them it's one present you'd especially enjoy! And at those Masses, we'll be offering a special prayer of blessing to the Moms and Grandmothers attending. And praying for all Moms who have gone on to heaven. Let me also say a gentle word about collections. You are ALWAYS generous in your support of our parish. And for that I am deeply grateful. But as prices on just about everything rise, so too do our financial needs. I know for myself, that if I looked back to what I donated to Our Lady of Lourdes Parish in 2012, it's likely the same amount as what I donate in But prices have increased since then. I should try to do better. I will try and I ask you to please consider doing the same. A slight increase in donations by all of us can be a saving grace for our parish. Finally, I noticed that our donations to the Capital Campaign have been coming in faithfully. That's wonderful, allowing us to make the physical improvements we need in the parish. I also noticed that five pledges will likely not be fulfilled because of unexpected personal hardships in those families. That's to be expected in any campaign. People pledge in good faith, but don't know where life and challenges may lead them. The unfulfilled pledges amount to a little over five thousand dollars. If you know of anyone who could not make a pledge last year when we held the campaign, please invite them to think of 'adopting' the pledges that these good folks are unable to realize. We all go through periods of sometimes having, and other times having less. But when we give as we can, it all gets covered! Thanks for your thoughtful consideration. In the love of Christ, Msgr. Jim Lisante Pastor

Currently our food pantry is in need of Macaroni & Cheese, Tomato Sauce, Pasta, Powdered Milk and Canned Fruits Please continue to be as generous as your means allow. On behalf of our neighbors in need, thank you for all the good you do! We Care Blankets As our wonderful group of Care Blanket volunteers continue to meet on Wednesday mornings from 10:00-11:30am at Parish Outreach, the gifts of their love, time and talent in crocheting and knitting beautiful blankets for seriously ill children is nothing less than a beautiful thing! Since our group began in November 2009, the completed blanket count stands at 1,895 I m sure in no time at all we will be adding to this amazing number. Thank you to our lovely group of ladies for all the good work you do to bring love and comfort to many children undergoing cancer care. Outreach is happy to accept donations of yarns, crochet hooks or knitting needles in support of this effort. If you are interested in joining our group please contact Parish Outreach at Ministry of Consolation Our parish is richly blessed to have gathered a wonderful group of volunteers who make up Our Lady of Lourdes Ministry of Consolation team. The most valuable gifts we can give are the gifts that come from the heart. The precious gifts of our time, love and compassion are especially needed during the time of the loss of a loved one. Created to provide warmth, caring and personal attention to assist families in preparation for the funeral mass, this particular ministry can never have too many helping hands. Whether your interest be that of a Greeter, Lector or EM, please give some thought as to sharing your time and talents and being a part of this ministry s call to love and care for one another. Thank you so much to our coordinator, Deacon Frank Gariboldi and all our volunteers for embracing this beautiful ministry. Please call Parish Outreach at if you would like to volunteer. Thank you for your consideration. Paper Goods Drive On occasion, the folks who come to us for food assistance will ask if we can provide paper products such as toilet paper or paper towels. Food donations, as you know, remain our first priority! However, it would be a helpful addition to the folks we serve if we could offer some assistance with paper goods. For the month of April, if you would consider a donation of toilet paper or paper towels that would be a wonderful thing! Thank you for all the good you do!

For information: We need your presence now more than ever! SPIRITUAL ADOPTION: This program involves making a personal commitment to pray daily for one unborn child who is in danger of being aborted. You are asked to spiritually adopt one unknown baby and pray that this child be carried to term and experience the fullness of life as God intended. Daily prayer: "Jesus, Mary and Joseph, I love you very much. I beg you to spare the life of the unborn baby that I have spiritually adopted who is in danger of abortion. (Prayer of Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen) HOPE AND HEALING AFTER ABORTION: The Sisters of Life host monthly Days of Prayer and Healing, monthly Gatherings, and Hope and Healing Weekend Retreats. These events are opportunities to experience the loving mercy of God in a safe and sacred space. All retreats are led by the Sisters of Life and women who have experienced both the suffering of abortion and the joy of healing in Christ. The retreats are directed by faithful priests who have a sensitivity and a heart for those who suffer. They include witnesses of mercy, Scripture sharing, personal prayer, opportunity for Sacramental Confession, and the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. Call or hopeandhealing@sistersoflife.org Unmasking Planned Parenthood: Friday, May 6th, 6:45pm-8:00pm, Prolifers are asked to take part in a vigil outside of the Planned Parenthood Fundraiser at Carlyle on the Green in Bethpage State Park, Bethpage. We stand outside the clubhouse/ restaurant fence area. This prolife witness is a silent reminder to those attending the fundraiser gala that there is nothing to celebrate about killing unborn babies. Our presence raises awareness about Planned Parenthood's abortion business. Rain or shine. Signs available at site. Sponsored by Long Island Coalition for Life, , info@prolifeli.org US Bishops Urge House to Pass Conscience Protection Act: The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) joined 25 other major pro-life, religious and health care organizations on April 19 urging the U.S. House of Representatives to pass the Conscience Protection Act of 2016 (H.R. 4828). Signatories include ten medical groups representing tens of thousands of health care professionals who object to abortion and are seeking legal protection to serve their patients in good conscience. "Federal laws protecting conscientious objection to abortion have been approved for decades by congresses and presidents of both parties. Even many 'prochoice' Americans realize that the logic of their position requires them to respect a choice not to be involved in abortion," they wrote. "Yet it is increasingly clear that the current laws offer far less protection in practice than in theory." The Conscience Protection Act (H.R. 4828), introduced on March 22 by Reps. John Fleming, M.D. (R-LA) and Vicky Hartzler (R-MO), addresses several "loopholes" in current federal laws that have allowed violations of conscience rights to continue. The letter cites a recent California mandate for almost all health plans in the state to pay for elective abortions, and the government's failure to vindicate the rights of New York nurse Cathy DeCarlo after she was pressured to assist at a late-term abortion. The joint letter highlights the modest nature of the bill, explaining that it "would mean almost no change in the substantive policy of Congress" but "would be an enormous step forward in assuring Americans who serve the sick and needy that they can do so without being forced by government to violate their most deeply held convictions on respect for innocent human life." The full text of the letter is available on the US Bishops website, Why should we respect conscientious objectors? By Michael Cook, April 23, 2016: The Canadian Parliament is drafting a law to implement a Canadian Supreme Court order to allow assisted suicide and euthanasia. Some doctors fear that they will be forced to perform the procedures or refer patients to more compliant doctors. Dr. Nancy Naylor wrote in the Canadian Family Physician, I refuse to let anyone or any organization dictate my moral code I am not renewing my license to practice medicine. I have practiced family medicine, including palliative care for the past 37 years I have no wish to stop. But I will not be told that I must go against my moral conscience to provide standard of care. Bioethicists Udo Schuklenk and Ricardo Smalling wrote in the Journal of Medical Ethics, Forcing patients to live by the conscientious objectors values constitutes an unacceptable infringement on the rights of patients. [They argue] that medical professionals have made a contract with society. In return for a lucrative monopoly on the provision of an essential service, patients have a right to demand that they provide socially acceptable and legal services. By withholding their services, they are exploiting the power differential between them and patients. They cite American bioethicist R. Alta Charo, who says, claiming an unfettered right to personal autonomy while holding monopolistic control over a public good constitutes an abuse of the public trust all the worse if it is not in fact a personal act of conscience but, rather, an attempt at cultural conquest. In Schuklenk and Smalling s view, Today it might be abortion and assisted dying, tomorrow it might be the use of the tools of personalized medicine or something else altogether. There might be a psychological cost to doctors whose conscientious beliefs are not accommodated by the state, but denying services to patients in need of services like abortion or euthanasia is more costly. If a doctor feels uncomfortable, he or she should leave the profession. Ultimately what matters is what society has declared to be legal, not the inscrutable dictates of an individual conscience Quoting Hobbes, they argue, the law is the public conscience by which [a citizen] hath already undertaken to be guided. If the law changes, consciences must change as well. Otherwise there would be anarchy. Cook notes, Since Hobbes laid the foundation for the modern totalitarian state, this allusion seems ominous.
