3 Page 3 Our Lady of Lourdes Parish MARCH 3, 2019 A Letter from the Pastor s Desk Dear Friends: When the story broke about actor Jussie Smollett of TV's Empire program being attacked in Chicago, people of every point-of-view condemned what seemed like a horrible anti-gay and racist event. But from the very start of this news story, some parts just didn't add up. And that gut feeling of 'something is wrong about this story,' has sadly proved correct. As you likely know, Smollett has been arrested for creating this false and arranged narrative. I mention this situation as an introduction to the most recent news from Newsday about charges brought against our former Bishop, John R. McGann. Two adult women say that back in the 1960s, he joined others in sexually abusing them when they were children. If we ever reach the truth of this story, I'm betting we've got another Jussie Smollett situation. Let's consider a few factors: it took over fifty years for these (unnamed and unknown) people to decide to go public. Bishop McGann and the other priests charged with this attack are, of course, conveniently dead and cannot defend their good names. And let's mention that in over fifty years of priesthood and twenty-five years as our bishop, Bishop McGann's reputation as a man of honor and goodness was NEVER compromised by any similar stories or charges. But now, with the bishop dead for over sixteen years, we're asked to believe that this man of goodness and faithfulness decided to compromise that to exploit children in the 1960s!! In all of these stories, it's also important to challenge the role of some lawyers in this mercenary enterprise. Newspapers like The Daily News regularly have full-page ads by laws firms proclaiming their willingness to take on ANY and ALL claims of exploitation by priests or bishops. They even include a big picture of a Roman collar to jar the suggested memory. And is it worth mentioning that these same law firms know they get a sizeable chunk of whatever financial settlements they're able to achieve? And then the media. Shame on Newsday. Their story about Bishop McGann is filled with unexplained holes. This is a long ago story, reported fifty years later by two women seeking millions in a payout. This is legitimate front page news? If these were not hysterical times of charges made without evidence, we wouldn't be hearing of these two women's accounts from one of the biggest media operations on Long Island. But scandal, founded or unfounded, sells newspapers. Only here's the thing: where does Bishop McGann go to get back his long and outstanding reputation as a good, decent, kind and loving man? I honor this good priest. We lived in the same rectory for many years. I worked with him closely. I enjoyed conversations that were not just about business or work, but were personal and revealing. He acknowledged being mystified and deeply troubled by ANY priest who could exploit children, and I will wager my life on the fact that he was not one of these exploiters. As those of you who have heard my homilies know, I am heartsick over the scandals. I believe with all my heart that abusing children is a truly sinful and evil act, and that it violates the teachings of Jesus who said: "Woe to him who hurts the little ones, better a millstone be tied around his neck and he be thrown into the river than to hurt the little ones." But somewhere in these difficult times, we need to also remember the evil that is false accusation. And when it comes to Bishop McGann, I believe that he is falsely and unfairly accused. Thank you for your consideration. In the Love of Christ, Msgr. Jim Lisante Pastor

4 Page 4 Our Lady of Lourdes Parish MARCH 3, 2019 Our observance of Lent begins on Ash Wednesday In 1966 Pope Paul VI reorganized the Church's practice of public penance in his "Apostolic Constitution on Penance" (Poenitemini). The 1983 revision of the Code of Canon Law incorporated the changes made by Pope Paul. Not long after that, the U.S. bishops applied the canonical requirements to the practice of public penance in our country. To sum up those requirements, Catholics between the ages of 18 and 59 are obliged to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. In addition, all Catholics 14 years old and older must abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday, Good Friday and all the Fridays of Lent. Fasting as explained by the U.S. bishops means partaking of only one full meal. Some food (not equaling another full meal) is permitted at breakfast and around midday or in the evening depending on when a person chooses to eat the main or full meal. Abstinence forbids the use of meat, but not of eggs, milk products or condiments made of animal fat. Abstinence does not include meat juices and liquid foods made from meat. Thus, such foods as chicken broth, consommé, soups cooked or flavored with meat, meat gravies or sauces, as well as seasonings or condiments made from animal fat are not forbidden. So it is permissible to use margarine and lard. Even bacon drippings which contain little bits of meat may be poured over lettuce as seasoning. Each year in publishing the Lenten penance requirements, the U.S. bishops quote the teaching of the Holy Father concerning the seriousness of observing these days of penance. The obligation to do penance is a serious one; the obligation to observe, as a whole or "substantially," the days of penance is also serious. But no one should be scrupulous in this regard; failure to observe individual days of penance is not considered serious. Moral theologians remind us that some people are excused from fasting and/or abstinence because of sickness or other reasons. In his "Apostolic Constitution on Penance," Pope Paul VI did more than simply reorganize Church law concerning fast and abstinence. He reminded us of the divine law that each of us in our own way do penance. We must all turn from sin and make reparation to God for our sins. We must forgive and show love for one another just as we ask for God's love and forgiveness. The Code of Canon Law and our bishops remind us of other works and means of doing penance: prayer, acts of self-denial, almsgiving and works of personal charity. Attending Mass daily or several times a week, praying the rosary, making the way of the cross, attending the parish evening prayer service, teaching the illiterate to read, reading to the blind, helping at a soup kitchen, visiting the sick and shut-ins and giving an overworked mother a break by baby-sitting all of these can be even more meaningful and demanding than simply abstaining from meat on Friday. ASH WEDNESDAY Wednesday, March 6th The Ashes will be imposed after all of the daily Masses at 6:45 A.M, 8:30 A.M., and 8 P.M. In addition ashes will be imposed at Lenten Prayer Services held at 12/Noon, 3 P.M. and 5 P.M.

5 Our Lady of Lourdes Parish Page 5 MARCH 3, 2019 Lent 2019 DIOCESE OF ROCKVILLE CENTRE OFFICE OF THE BISHOP Dear Friends: As we begin our prayer, fasting and almsgiving for the needs of the poor and the suffering of the world in this Lenten season 2019, we recommit ourselves to repentance, conversion and holiness individually and as a Church. We remember in a focused way this Lent the survivors of clergy sexual abuse and all forms of abuse and we pray for the purification, reform and sanctification of the Church. In Rejoice and Be Glad, Pope Francis says: Do not be afraid of holiness. It will take away none of your energy, vitality or joy. (32) He [The Lord] wants us to be saints and not to settle for a bland and mediocre existence. (1) Holiness is the most attractive face of the Church. (9) the Church needs passionate missionaries, enthusiastic about sharing true life. The saints surprise us, they confound us, because by their lives they urge us to abandon a dull and dreary mediocrity. (138) One of the ways we commit ourselves to this radiant, natural and humble holiness is by expanding the breadth and depth of our daily engagement with the inspired Sacred Scriptures. We are called to live the words of Psalm 119: Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path. The saints of every decade and century inspire us since the most profound interpretation of Scripture comes precisely from those who let themselves be shaped by the word of God through listening, reading, and assiduous meditation. (Pope Benedict XVI, The Word of the Lord 48) Could each one of us individually and together, united in communion as a Church, take one step with the Holy Spirit this Lent to deepen our love for the inspired Sacred Scriptures? In his Apostolic Exhortation The Word of the Lord (2010), Pope Benedict XVI gives us an excellent process of praying individual biblical passages, a process of lectio divina or sacred reading of the text that includes reading, meditating, praying, contemplating and living the biblical text. We need to believe with confidence and a spirit of adventure that the Holy Spirit is present in the text and that the Holy Spirit s tongues of flame are connecting the text to our souls transforming us in mysterious and profound ways. I would like to analyze and comment on the steps that Pope Benedict XVI proposes to us. (For the complete version of Bishop Barres Lenten Letter 2019 which analyzes Pope Benedict s approach to lectio divina, see this link The Word of God makes us realists who recognize that the Word of God is the foundation of all things. (10) As your bishop and servant, I invite you during this Lenten Season 2019 and beyond, to discover or rediscover the power of the Word of God by reading, meditating, praying, contemplating and living the inspired Sacred Scriptures. In the end, as Father Gaston Courtois points out: Contemplatives are the true missionaries and alone can be the true spiritual teachers. Thank you all for your passion and daily dedication to the inspired Sacred Scriptures. Thank you for being the contemplatives, the missionaries, the spiritual teachers that are the agents and instruments of dramatic missionary growth on Long Island and beyond. Sincerely in Christ, Most Reverend John O. Barres
